YouTube Videos as a Source of Information on Colorectal Cancer: What Do Our Patients Learn?
This study aims to report the characteristics and quality of these videos as patient education resources for CRC. YouTube ’s search engine was queried with different search phrases relating to CRC. The first two pages of each search result were analyzed. Two specialists devised a critical appraisal tool with a list of criteria to assess the videos. Quantitative YouTube parameter analyses and criteria assessment were performed. Inter-rater agreement was assessed between three raters. A total of 46 videos were eligible to be included in the study. The videos were on average 4:51 ± 3:27 min long. The videos had 10 tim...

The use of hospital-based services by heart failure patients in the last year of life: a discussion paper
AbstractIndividuals with chronic heart failure have high utilisation of hospital-related services towards the end of life and receive treatments that provide symptom relief without improving life expectancy. The aim of this discussion paper is to determine chronic heart failure patients ’ use of acute hospital-based services in their last year of life and to discuss the potential for palliative care to reduce service utilisation. A systematic search of the literature was conducted. Medline, Cumulative Index for Nursing and Allied Health (CINAHL) and SCOPUS databases were used to systematically search for literature from ...

Prevention of delirium in acute decompensated heart failure using multi-component non-pharmacologic prevention
ConclusionsThe educational intervention was designed to increase awareness and understanding of the nursing staff regarding the nature, characteristics, negative outcomes, and costs of delirium, as well as the success and net monetary benefit of prevention protocols. The educational program focused on practical strategies derived from the NICE Clinical Guideline 103. Delirium prevention reduces length of stay, healthcare costs, and nursing hours per patient day. Prevention also improves patient outcomes. The minimal costs of the protocol will increase nursing and administrative support for prevention interventions.Nurses a...

Efficacy and safety of medicinal cannabis: results of the CaPRis study.
Abstract In the 1990s, the endocannabinoid system was discovered as part of the human physiology. Since then, the effects of cannabis as a medicine have been researched more systematically. To summarize the scientific knowledge, the German Federal Ministry of Health commissioned an expertise. The project "Cannabis: Potential and Risks: a Scientific Analysis" (CaPRis), which started in 2016, aimed at analyzing the potential of medicinal cannabis and the risks of recreational cannabis use. A search of systematic reviews (SRs) and randomized-controlled trials (RCTs) were conducted in five international databases (p...

Evaluating recruitment methods of patients with advanced cancer: a pragmatic opportunistic comparison
ConclusionThe overall recruitment rate was in line with other studies for this patient cohort. Attempts to identify and engage patients through community ‐based postal contact were less effective than where personal contact with patients was both possible and occurred. Methods were less successful at recruiting patients who were not already engaged with hospice services.

Inhaled nitric oxide for treating pain crises in people with sickle cell disease.
CONCLUSIONS: The currently available trials do not provide sufficient evidence to determine the effects (benefits or harms) of using inhaled nitric oxide to treat pain (vaso-occlusive) crises in people with sickle cell disease. Large-scale, long-term trials are needed to provide more robust data in this area. Patient-important outcomes (e.g. measures of pain and time to pain resolution and amounts of analgesics used), as well as use of healthcare services should be measured and reported in a standardized form. Palliative Care in a Death-Denying Culture: Exploring Barriers to Timely Palliative Efforts for Heart Failure Patients in the Primary Care Setting.
CONCLUSION: The results of this review highlight a lack of communication, time, and knowledge as barriers to delivering PC. Primary care providers caring for patients with HF need to establish an Annual Heart Failure Review to meticulously evaluate symptoms and allow the time for communication involving prognosis, utilize a PC referral screening tool such as the Needs Assessment Tool: Progressive Disease-Heart Failure, and thoroughly understand the benefits and appropriate integration of PC. Palliative drug treatments for breathlessness in cystic fibrosis.
CONCLUSIONS: Due to the lack of available evidence, this review cannot provide any information for clinical practice. The authors call for specific research in this area after taking into account relevant ethical considerations. The research should focus on the efficacy and safety of the drugs with efficacy being measured in terms of improvement in quality of life, dyspnoea scores and hospital stay. Oyster Care: An Innovative Palliative Approach towards SPMI Patients
This article offers a conceptual analysis of the Oyster Care model, based on experiences, analysis, and reflection of the authors, and on several examples. The starting point of the development of this new care model is the complex and difficult context of the care for SPMI patients. Their needs and suffering are very challenging on account of a wide variety of causes. At the same time they are in danger of being neglected by the care system. Paradoxically, the development and implementation of psychosocial rehabilitation in Belgian mental health care puts the care for these patients under pressure. In practice, they are o...
