Extensive swelling reaction after a pentavalent vaccination.
Abstract Injection site reactions (ISRs) are quite common side effects defined by a local adverse drug reaction directly caused by a vaccine. Twenty-four hours after an intramuscular injection (in the deltoid muscle) of the diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis, inactivated poliomyelitis, Haemophilus influenza type b (DTPCa-Hib) combined vaccine, a 3-year-old boy developed fever. A few hours later, local redness and swelling appeared at the injection site, with rapid extension to the entire limb, it was pain-free, and no other clinical anomalies were present. The patient received intravenous antibiotics for sus...

Post-marketing surveillance of adverse events following immunization with inactivated quadrivalent and trivalent influenza vaccine in health care providers in Western Australia.
Abstract In 2015, inactivated quadrivalent influenza vaccine (QIV) was first introduced into the Australian market. A routine vaccine safety surveillance system in Western Australia was used to conduct post-licensure surveillance of adverse events following immunization with inactivated QIV and trivalent influenza vaccines (TIV) in a sample of 1685 healthcare providers (HCPs). A similar percentage of HCPs who received QIV reported having any reaction seven days post-vaccination as HCPs who received TIV (13.6 vs. 12.8%, respectively; p=0.66). However, a slightly higher percentage of HCPs who received QIV reported p...

Influenza vaccination is safe and effective in patients suffering from fibromyalgia syndrome.
Abstract The fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is considered to result from the exposure of a genetically susceptible individual to various triggers, such as physical trauma, stress, viral infections etc. A possible role of vaccination in FMS etiology has been suspected. Our objective was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of influenza vaccination in FMS patients. Nineteen FMS patients underwent physical and dolorimetric examinations and answered the fibromyalgia impact questionnaire (FIQ), the widespread pain index (WPI) checklist and the symptoms severity scale (SSS), which are part of the 2010 diagnostic criteria. T...

Safety and tolerability of a cell culture derived trivalent subunit inactivated influenza vaccine administered to healthy children and adolescents: A Phase III, randomized, multi-center, observer-blind study.
CONCLUSION: TIVc was well tolerated and had a safety and reactogenicity profile similar to that of TIVf in healthy 4-17 year-olds (NCT01857206). PMID: 26643931 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

A systematic review and meta-analysis on the safety of newly adjuvanted vaccines among children.
CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis did not show any safety concerns in clinical trials of the newly adjuvanted vaccines in children ≤10 years of age. An unexplained increase of meningitis in one Phase III AS01-adjuvanted malaria trial and the link between narcolepsy and the AS03-adjuvanted pandemic vaccine illustrate that continued safety monitoring is warranted. Post-Vaccination Headache Reporting Trends According to the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) (P1.147)
Conclusions: Headache is a commonly reported vaccine related adverse event; a small subset of reports were considered serious. The development of vaccine-related classification criteria may be useful to better evaluate headache as an adverse event.Disclosure: Dr. Cocores has nothing to disclose. Dr. Monteith has nothing to disclose.

The Zika Virus Lesson? A New Approach Is Needed to Combat Pandemics
The Zika virus attracted many headlines this winter, but a recent admission by the chief medical officer at a leading vaccine manufacturer -- that the world is ill-prepared to deal with pandemic outbreaks -- underscores a fundamental problem. To ensure safety and efficacy, the federal government's regulatory approval process for new vaccines may extend development timelines for years. So when The New York Times reports that "eighteen organizations are working on developing a vaccine for the Zika virus," it is likely that those companies will labor for a very long time. Vaccinations rightly require strict federal approva...

Rheumatoid arthritis patients 'may be missing out on vaccinations'
People with rheumatoid arthritis in the UK may be missing out on important vaccinations, potentially putting them at a greater risk of infection. This is according to an Arthritis Research UK-funded study from the University of Manchester, which has identified a shortfall in the uptake of influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations among those diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis after examining the electronic patient records of 15,724 individuals. An increased infection risk Published in the medical journal PLOS One, the research specifically looked at data from patients diagnosed with the disease who were being treated with cer...

Japanese Government Continues to Ban the MMR Vaccine
Conclusion Japanese officials have made decisions that value the health and safety of their citizens when they have removed vaccines with dangerous side effects from their national vaccination program. Japan boasts a low infant mortality rate, despite — or perhaps because of  — mandating only a fraction of the vaccines required by other developed countries, including the United States. If you wish to learn more about the harmful ingredients in vaccines or the potential adverse reactions, we have compiled an easy-to-navigate list of vaccine package inserts from the manufacturers that you can view or download he...

Immunogenicity and safety of inactivated quadrivalent influenza vaccine in adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.
CONCLUSION: In adults, inactivated QIV was as immunogenic as seasonal TIV, with equivalent efficacy against the shared three strains included in TIV, and a superior immunogenicity against the non-TIV B lineage. PMID: 27381642 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Using Electronic Health Record Data to Measure Care Quality for Individuals with Multiple Chronic Medical Conditions
ConclusionHigh‐quality MCC care should be measured using meaningful process measures rather than outcomes. Although some care processes are currently extractable from electronic data, capturing others will require adapting and applying technology to encourage holistic, person‐centered care.
