Contribution of non-socioeconomic factors to healthy quality of life in socioeconomically deprived patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer: Measuring attributable fraction
CONCLUSIONS: Gait, self-care ability, abdominal distension, nutritional status, weight loss and posture are important determinants of healthy quality of life in patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer with socioeconomic deprivation, and early identification and strength management of these non-socioeconomic factors may neutralize the negative impact of socioeconomic factors on the quality of life.IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: This study provides new ideas and intervention entry points for global nurses in practice innovations to improve the quality of life of socioeconomically deprived patients with advanced gastrointe...

Microbiome Assembly in Fermented Foods
Annu Rev Microbiol. 2023 Sep 15;77:381-402. doi: 10.1146/annurev-micro-032521-041956.ABSTRACTFor thousands of years, humans have enjoyed the novel flavors, increased shelf-life, and nutritional benefits that microbes provide in fermented foods and beverages. Recent sequencing surveys of ferments have mapped patterns of microbial diversity across space, time, and production practices. But a mechanistic understanding of how fermented food microbiomes assemble has only recently begun to emerge. Using three foods as case studies (surface-ripened cheese, sourdough starters, and fermented vegetables), we use an ecological and ev...

Delivery of telehealth nutrition and physical activity interventions to adults living in rural areas: a scoping review
CONCLUSIONS: Despite differences in intervention characteristics, the number of randomised control trials published suggests sufficient scope for future systematic reviews to determine intervention effectiveness related to nutrition and physical activity telehealth interventions for rural populations.TRIAL REGISTRATION: The scoping review protocol was not pre-registered.PMID:37715234 | PMC:PMC10504780 | DOI:10.1186/s12966-023-01505-2

Assessing heavy metal levels in pediatric enteral nutrition formulas available in the Turkish market: Implications for consumer health
In this study, we assessed the levels of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and inorganic arsenic (iAs) in 27 pediatric enteral nutrition (EN) formulas from five international brands available in the Turkish market. Analysis was conducted using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk assessment was performed using hazard quotient (HQ), hazard index (HI), carcinogenic risk (CR), Toxicological contribution % of Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake (PTWI) models. Our objective was to evaluate heavy metal exposure in EN formulas, specifically focusing on Cd, Pb, iAs, and...

Promoting plant-based eating in meat-centric meal contexts: a field study
CONCLUSIONS: A short-term, theory-driven, operationally feasible intervention was effective in promoting increased plant-based meal choices in a collective meal context. Nevertheless, these changes were not entirely sustained over time. Future studies could test whether prolonged or more transformative interventions are necessary to unlock entrenched food practices more effectively in meat-centric collective meal contexts.PMID:37712383 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980023001763

Mentha pulegium: A Plant With Several Medicinal Properties
Endocr Metab Immune Disord Drug Targets. 2023 Sep 14. doi: 10.2174/1871530323666230914103731. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe species Mentha pulegium L. (M. pulegium L.) belongs to the family Lamiaceae, native to Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, and the genus Mentha. It has been traditionally used in food, cosmetics, and medicines. It is a perennial, fragrant, well-liked, herbaceous plant that can grow up to half a meter tall. It is extensively used as a food flavoring, particularly for Moroccan traditional drinks. Chewing mint and M. pulegium, a relaxing and refreshing plant, can be used to treat hiccups and a...

The role of the fishery industry in the shift towards sustainable food security: a critical study of blue food
This article aims to examine the dynamic impact of the fishery sector on long-term food security in 27 European Union (EU27) countries while considering the contribution of agricultural output, energy production, economic development, and governance between 1990 and 2022. The findings showed a substantial positive link between fishery production and sustainable food security at a 5% statistical level, except the fifth quantile, using the new method of moment quantile regression (MMQR) with fixed effects. From the first to the ninth quantiles, fishery output considerably improves sustainable food security, with a more subst...

Association between co-exposure to phenols, phthalates, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with the risk of frailty
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 15. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29887-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe phenomenon of population aging has brought forth the challenge of frailty. Nevertheless, the contribution of environmental exposure to frailty remains ambiguous. Our objective was to investigate the association between phenols, phthalates (PAEs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with frailty. We constructed a 48-item frailty index using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The exposure levels of 20 organic contaminants were obtained from the survey circle between 2005 an...

Association between urinary metabolites of volatile organic compounds and cardiovascular disease in the general population from NHANES 2011-2018
CONCLUSION: The findings of this study suggested a significant correlation between urinary VOC metabolites and CVD. Urinary mVOCs may indicate hazardous exposure or distinct metabolic traits in patients with CVD.PMID:37714034 | DOI:10.1016/j.ecoenv.2023.115412

IJERPH, Vol. 20, Pages 6763: Nutritional Care for Institutionalized Persons with Dementia: An Integrative Review
Conclusions: Both the assessment and nutritional care interventions for older people with dementia should consider the patient–caregiver dyad as the subject of care and understand the context as a fundamental part of it. The analysis of the context should look further than the immediate environment.
