What Are Some Etiologies for Intellectual Disability?
Discussion “Intellectual disability (ID) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by deficits in both intellectual functioning and adaptive function whose onset is in the development period.” Global developmental delay (GDD) is used to describe children from 0-5 years old with significant delays in 2 or more developmental areas. These delays may be transient but up to 2/3 of children with GDD will have ID. Overall 1-3% of the general population has ID which makes it very common. Most children with GDD/ID are identified because of delays in meeting milestones or general academic achievement. ID pat...

What Laboratory Tests Are Consistent with Transient Erythroblastopenia of Childhood?
Discussion Transient erythroblastopenia of childhood (TEC) is an “…anemia with a hemoglobin level at least 2 [standard deviations] below normal and a low reticulocyte count in relationship to the anemia in the absence of evidence of alternative causes of anemia.” A bone marrow aspirate shows decreased or absent erythroid precursor cells if obtained. The etiology is not well understood but may have a stimulating cause such as a viral infection, an immune-related and/or genetic cause. Parvovirus causing bone marrow suppression has been implicated and there are cases of affected siblings. TEC is most common ...

Effect of Minerals on Intestinal IgA Production Using Deep Sea Water Drinks.
Abstract Minerals are essential for life, as they are a vital part of protein constituents, enzyme cofactors, and other components in living organisms. Deep sea water is characterized by its cleanliness and stable low temperature, and its possible health- and medical benefits are being studied. However, no study has yet evaluated the physical properties of the numerous commercially available deep sea water products, which have varying water sources and production methods. We analyzed these products' mineral content and investigated their effect on living organism, focusing on immune functions, and investigated the...

Winter iron supply processes fueling spring phytoplankton growth in a sub-polar marginal sea, the Sea of Okhotsk: Importance of sea ice and the East Sakhalin Current
Publication date: Available online 1 September 2018Source: Marine ChemistryAuthor(s): Naoya Kanna, Yusuke Sibano, Takenobu Toyota, Jun NishiokaAbstractTo evaluate the winter iron (Fe) supply processes fueling spring phytoplankton growth in the southern Sea of Okhotsk, the distributions of the Fe concentrations in seawater were investigated using hydrographic observations in late November (in the absence of sea ice) and mid-February (in the presence of sea ice). The results obtained from the hydrographic observations indicated a temporal increase in the Fe concentration in the surface mixed layer from November to February, ...

Accumulation processes of trace metals into Arctic sea ice: distribution of Fe, Mn and Cd associated with ice structure
Publication date: Available online 4 December 2018Source: Marine ChemistryAuthor(s): La Kenya Evans, Jun NishiokaAbstractBiogeochemical cycling of trace metals in sea ice is important to the productivity of the Arctic Ocean. Unfortunately, the processes of how trace metals accumulate into sea ice are poorly understood. To gain a clearer understanding of the mechanisms behind trace metal accumulation, dissolved (D, <0.2 μm), and labile particulate (LP = Total Dissolvable – Dissolved) iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and cadmium (Cd) concentrations were compared to the structure observed in sea ice. Samples were pre-c...

Turbidite deposition and diagenesis in the southwestern Black Sea: Implications for biogeochemical cycling in an anoxic basin
Publication date: Available online 3 January 2019Source: Marine ChemistryAuthor(s): Peter Kraal, Mustafa Yücel, Caroline P. SlompAbstractThe biogeochemical cycles of iron, phosphorus and sulfur are intimately linked and the fate of these elements is highly redox-dependent. Under anoxic conditions, iron is reduced to Fe(II), for an important part driven by reaction with sulfide. Reduction and sulfidation diminish the affinity of iron for phosphorus, thereby affecting sedimentary phosphorus retention. The coupled cycling of iron-phosphorus-sulfur as a function of redox conditions thereby helps control nutrient availability ...

Time course analysis of immunity-related gene expression in the sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus during exposure to thermal and hypoxic stress
Publication date: December 2019Source: Fish & Shellfish Immunology, Volume 95Author(s): Da Huo, Lina Sun, Libin Zhang, Hongsheng Yang, Shilin Liu, Jingchun Sun, Fang SuAbstractTemperature and dissolved oxygen concentration are important abiotic factors that can limit the growth and survival of sea cucumbers by affecting their immune systems. As global warming intensifies, sea cucumbers are increasingly exposed to adverse environmental conditions, which can cause severe economic losses and limit the sustainable development of sea cucumber aquaculture. It is therefore important to better understand how sea cucumbers respond ...

Sensors, Vol. 18, Pages 234: Hyperspectral Features of Oil-Polluted Sea Ice and the Response to the Contamination Area Fraction
er Muller Researchers have studied oil spills in open waters using remote sensors, but few have focused on extracting reflectance features of oil pollution on sea ice. An experiment was conducted on natural sea ice in Bohai Bay, China, to obtain the spectral reflectance of oil-contaminated sea ice. The spectral absorption index (SAI), spectral peak height (SPH), and wavelet detail coefficient (DWT d5) were calculated using stepwise multiple linear regression. The reflectances of some false targets were measured and analysed. The simulated false targets were sediment, iron ore fines, coal dust, and the melt pool. The me...

Associations of Anemia With Outcomes in Patients With Spontaneous Intracerebral Hemorrhage: A Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: Anemia on admission was associated with higher mortality and an increased risk of poor outcome in patients with ICH. However, the results were limited by the high heterogeneity of included studies. Prospective, multi-center or population-based, large sample cohort studies are needed in the future. Introduction Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is the second most common cause of stroke and a highly lethal disease (1), which still lacks effective therapeutic interventions (2, 3). Although age, baseline ICH volume and neurological status on admission are well-known predictors of outcome of ICH (4), none of t...

What is in the Differential Diagnosis for Green, Blue or Violet Skin Conditions?
Discussion Acrocyanosis is commonly seen in the newborn period as the baby transitions to extra-uterine life. It appears as blue-purple coloration of the distal extremities which usually improves over several hours. Blue melanocytosis is also a common normal variant of skin color. It usually is seen on the posterior surface of the body around the spine and buttocks, but can also be on the upper parts of the extremities. It is a blue-black coloration that shows a normal skin undertone when palpated. This is the second in a short case series of differential diagnoses of colored skin conditions. An introduction to dermatologi...

Genes, Vol. 14, Pages 905: Comparative Transcriptomics in Atlantic Salmon Head Kidney and SHK-1 Cell Line Exposed to the Sea Louse Cr-Cathepsin
This study explored a cell-based approach to prospect antigens as candidate vaccines against sea lice by comparison with immunized fish. Herein, SHK-1 cells and Atlantic salmon head kidney tissue were exposed to the antigen cathepsin identified from the sea louse Caligus rogercresseyi. The cathepsin protein was cloned and recombinantly expressed in Escherichia coli, and then SHK-1 cell lines were stimulated with 100 ng/mL cathepsin recombinant for 24 h. In addition, Atlantic salmons were vaccinated with 30 ug/mL recombinant protein, and head kidney samples were then collected 30 days post-immunization. SHK-1 cells and salm...

Consider This Speculative Amazon Scenario
By TORY WOLF Amazon has many puzzled about its plans for healthcare. Arguably, Amazon is just as puzzled, but is – in effect — running a massive Delphi process to sort out the plan. Amazon is, after all, the Breaker of Industries, Destroyer of Margins. Allow rumors to float, hire some people, have meetings, seek a few regulatory approvals, start a vaguely missioned non-profit with other business titans. Fear and greed do the rest. Stock prices gyrate as investors bet and counter bet on who is vulnerable, incumbent CEOs promise cooperation or competitive hostility, analysts speculate, “old hands” pontificate, a...
