Electron Transfer Beyond the Outer Membrane: Putting Electrons to Rest
Annu Rev Microbiol. 2023 Sep 15;77:517-539. doi: 10.1146/annurev-micro-032221-023725.ABSTRACTExtracellular electron transfer (EET) is the physiological process that enables the reduction or oxidation of molecules and minerals beyond the surface of a microbial cell. The first bacteria characterized with this capability were Shewanella and Geobacter, both reported to couple their growth to the reduction of iron or manganese oxide minerals located extracellularly. A key difference between EET and nearly every other respiratory activity on Earth is the need to transfer electrons beyond the cell membrane. The past decade has re...

Identification of priority pollutants at an integrated iron and steel facility based on environmental and health impacts in the Yangtze River Delta region, China
Ecotoxicol Environ Saf. 2023 Sep 11;264:115464. doi: 10.1016/j.ecoenv.2023.115464. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEmissions from the iron and steel industry are a major source of air pollution. To investigate the composition characteristics, estimate the secondary transformation potential, and assess the ecological risk and human health risks of air pollutants from iron and steel industry, field measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and trace metals (TMs) were conducted simultaneously from 2020 to 2022 in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region, China. The average mixing concentration of VOCs (Σ64VOCs) was 58.2 pp...

Identification of a novel competing endogenous RNA network and candidate drugs associated with ferroptosis in aldosterone-producing adenomas
This study obtained datasets of the mRNA and lncRNA expression profiles for APA and adjacent adrenal gland (AAG) from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and lncRNAs (DE lncRNAs) associated with ferroptosis were identified. Enrichment analyses indicated 89 ferroptosis-related DEGs were primarily enriched in ROS related processes and ferroptosis. Two physical cores, and one combined core were identified in the protein-protein interaction (PPI). DEGs and clinical traits were used in conjunction to screen eight hub genes from two hub modules and 89 DEGs. A competitive endogenous R...
