Ischemic Stroke In Neonatal And Adult Astrocytes
The objective of this paper is to review current information regarding astrocytes function after a stroke in neonatal and adult brain. Based on the current literature, there are some molecular differences related to blood brain barrier (BBB) homeostasis disruption, inflammation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) mediated injury between the immature and mature brain after an ischemic event. In particular, astrocytes, the main glial cells in brain, play a different role in neonatal and adult brain after stroke, as time course of glial activation is strongly age dependent. Moreover, the present review provides further insight ...

319 Appropriate Duration of Extended Cardiac Monitoring for Atrial Fibrillation in Cryptogenic Stroke
ConclusionExternal loop recorders present an opportunity for detection of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in high risk individuals. Our study shows the feasibility and accuracy of a screening duration of seven days in the high risk post ischaemic stroke population.A one week screening timeframe allows us to screen twice as many patients for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. Successful screening for atrial fibrillation in this high risk group allows the commencement of acceptable and safe anticoagulant therapy.

86 Haemorrhagic Stroke: What's in a Bleed?
ConclusionThere were a greater proportion of patients with lobar versus deep bleeds in our cohort which may be due to the older population in our area.Mortality and disability was far greater in the lobar cohort.None of the lobar bleeds with AF who were on OAC died in contrast to the deep ICH patients. This may suggest that more aggressive hypertensive treatment is required in this subpopulation.

Dimensions of post-stroke depression and neuropsychological deficits in older adults
Stroke is the leading cause of both serious and long-term disability and the fifth leading cause of death in the United States.1,2 Post-stroke depression (PSD) afflicts approximately one-fourth of stroke survivors and increases the likelihood of persistent disability.3-6 Prompt identification and treatment of PSD can improve affective symptoms and stroke related disability.7,8

Implementation of a Transitional Care Model for Stroke: Perspectives From Frontline Clinicians, Administrators, and COMPASS-TC Implementation Staff.
DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Multifaceted TC models are challenging to implement. Facilitators of implementation were organizational commitment and capacity, prioritizing implementation of innovative delivery models to provide comprehensive care, being able to address challenges quickly, implementing systems for tracking patients throughout the intervention, providing clinicians with autonomy and support to address challenges, and adequately resourcing the intervention. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT02588664. PMID: 32275060 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Validation Study of Both the Modified Barthel and Barthel Index, and Their Comparison Based on Rasch Analysis in the Hospitalized Acute Stroke Elderly.
Authors: Aminalroaya R, Mirzadeh FS, Heidari K, Alizadeh-Khoei M, Sharifi F, Effatpanah M, Angooti-Oshnari L, Fadaee S, Saghebi H, Hormozi S Abstract A validation study the Iranian Modified Barthel Index (MBI) in hospitalized acute stroke elderly by classical test theory approach and investigate Rasch analysis for both Iranian version MBI and BI and compare the hierarchical item difficulty of them. Face-to-face interview with 100 geriatric stroke inpatients 60+ or their caregivers was done in a cross-sectional study. First, construct validity of MBI analyzed by the classical test theory, then Rasch analysis were do...

Burdens among familial caregivers of stroke survivors: a literature review
Wanich Suksatan, Codey J. Collins, Apinya Koontalay, Vachira Posai Working with Older People, Vol. ahead-of-print, No. ahead-of-print, pp.- This paper aims to identify and examine burden(s) among stroke survivors’ familial caregivers for the purposes of future mitigation of such burdens. The purpose is so because these caregivers become the persons responsible for monitoring the daily living activities of their patients and are thus tasked with providing and managing a whole host of recovery, therapy and re-integrative activities to rebalance and re-establish the physical, mental and social well-being ...

Everyday Abilities Scale for India in Screening for Poststroke Dementia Among Young Stroke Survivors
Introduction: Cognitive dysfunction after stroke is an important concern. We explored the utility of everyday abilities scale for India (EASI) for screening for dementia among young stroke survivors. Methods: We interviewed 150 young stroke survivors and caregivers. Vascular dementia was diagnosed according to American Heart Association-American Stroke Association (ASA-AHA) criteria. EASI was administered to all caregivers. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to determine the area under the curve and optimum cut-points for EASI for the identification of dementia. Results: Median EASI...

QTc prolongation as a possible contributor to Stroke
Some antipsychotics have been associated with increased risk for stroke (1). As demonstrated by the REGARDS Study (Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke), a prolonged QTc interval is associated with an increased risk of stroke (3). Antipsychotic agents, known to cause prolongation of the QTc, may increase the risk of stroke in a geriatric population.

Experiences of family caregivers 3-months after stroke: results of the prospective trans-regional network for stroke intervention with telemedicine registry (TRANSIT-Stroke)
Long-term support of stroke patients living at home is often delivered by family caregivers (FC). We identified characteristics of stroke patients being associated with receiving care by a FC 3-months (3  M) af...

Feeling Younger, Rehabilitating Better: Reciprocal and Mediating Effects between Subjective Age and Functional Independence in Osteoporotic Fracture and Stroke Patients
Discussion: The findings highlight the effect of subjective age on rehabilitation outcomes among osteoporotic fractures and stroke patients and suggest several potential mechanisms behind this effect. Rehabilitation outcomes following osteoporotic fractures or strokes could improve if subjective age and an optimistic outlook are taken into consideration.Gerontology
