5 Scary Symptoms That Are Usually Harmless
SPECIAL FROM Next Avenue By Linda Melone After 50, aches, pains and the occasional muscle twinge become a fact of life. But some symptoms that may seem frightening or serious turn out to be far less than they appear. While you should always see a doctor if you experience something out of the ordinary, these signs generally are more smoke than fire: A Bloody Nose Nosebleeds can be particularly frightening due to the suddenness in which they occur and the sometimes large amount of blood involved. “People worry that it’s internal bleeding, but almost every time it’s not,” says Dr. Carlo Reyes, emergency room...

Incidence and Predictors of Cognitive Decline in Patients with Left Ventricular Assist Devices Original Articles
Conclusions— Cognitive decline occurs commonly in patients in the year after LVAD and is associated with older age and destination therapy. These results could have important implications for patient selection and improved communication of risks before LVAD implantation. Additional studies are needed to explore the association between cognitive decline and subsequent stroke, health status, and mortality in patients after LVAD.

Hemodynamic Consequences of Malignant Ascites in Epithelial Ovarian Cancer Surgery*: A Prospective Substudy of a Randomized Controlled Trial
This study is a predefined post-hoc analysis of a randomized controlled pilot trial comparing intravenous solutions within a goal-directed algorithm to optimize hemodynamic therapy in patients undergoing cytoreductive EOC surgery. Ascites was used to stratify the EOC patients prior to randomization in the main study. We analyzed 2 groups according to the amount of ascites (NLAS: none or low ascites [500 mL]). Differences in hemodynamic variables with respect to time were analyzed using nonparametric analysis for longitudinal data and multivariate generalized estimating equation adjusting the analysis for the randomized s...

Pre-treatment clinical assessment in head and neck cancer: United Kingdom National Multidisciplinary Guidelines.
Authors: Robson A, Sturman J, Williamson P, Conboy P, Penney S, Wood H Abstract This is the official guideline endorsed by the specialty associations involved in the care of head and neck cancer patients in the UK. This paper provides recommendations on the pre-treatment clinical assessment of patients presenting with head and neck cancer. Recommendations • Comorbidity data should be collected as it is important in the analysis of survival, quality of life and functional outcomes after treatment as well as for comparing results of different treatment regimens and different centres. (R) • Patients with hypertens...

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation for Treatment of Aortic Valve Stenosis: A Health Technology Assessment.
CONCLUSIONS: Moderate quality evidence showed that TAVI and SAVR had similar mortality rates in patients who were eligible for surgery. Information about quality of life showed similar results for TAVI and SAVR in the first year, but was based on low quality evidence. Moderate quality evidence also showed that TAVI was associated with higher rates of adverse events than SAVR. In patients who were not suitable candidates for surgery, moderate quality evidence showed that TAVI improved survival compared with balloon aortic valvuloplasty. When TAVI was compared with SAVR, the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio was $51,988 p...

Godly gift for arthritis pain
Big Pharma is at it again… Creating and selling a drug that causes thousands of heart attacks and strokes each year. In 2015, the FDA asked drug makers to strengthen their warning labels. Since then, most have listed their dangerous side effects on the bottle. But one manufacturer thought they didn’t have to warn people about their dangerous drug. They marketed their product as a “unique” breakthrough. They even published studies promising it was “safe for long-term use.” 1 The drug is a 7-year-old arthritis drug called Actemra. It’s made by the Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche. ...

FDA clears AliveCor ’ s KardiaBand ECG for Apple Watch
AliveCor said today that the FDA cleared its KardioBand electrocardiogram device for the Apple Watch, designed to monitor for early signs of atrial fibrillation. First introduced in March 2016, KardiaBand is the first medical device accessory to be cleared by the federal safety watchdog for the Apple Watch, Mountain View, Calif.-based AliveCor said. It’s designed to display and record clinical-grade cardiac rhythm readings in real time in about 30 seconds, the company said. AliveCor also said it launched the SmartRhythm artificial intelligence app for the Apple Watch, which is designed to continuously evaluate the ...

Contemporary Drug Treatment of Hypertension: Focus on Recent Guidelines
AbstractThe 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association hypertension guidelines diagnose hypertension if systolic blood pressure (SBP) is  ≥ 130 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) is ≥ 80 mmHg. Increased BP is SBP 120–129 mmHg with DBP <  80 mmHg. Lifestyle measures should be used to treat individuals with increased BP. Lifestyle measures plus BP-lowering drugs should be used for secondary prevention of recurrent cardiovascular events in individuals with clinical cardiovascular disease (coronary heart disease, congestive heart fa ilure, or stroke) and an average SBP ≥ 1...

Investors See Big Opportunity in AI
Artificial Intelligence could be the next big market in medtech that investors flock to. Earlier this week, Viz.ai proved that this might just be the case as it raised about $21 million in a series A round. The round was led by Kleiner Perkins, with participation from GV, formerly Google Ventures. “One of the things we’re going to use the money is to expand beyond stroke and provide value to our hospitals, partners, and customers,” Chris Mansi, co-founder and CEO of Viz.ai., told MD+DI. “The second thing we’re going to use the money for is to ensure that more hospitals get access to our software.” Worldwide, mo...

Harnessing the Four Elements for Mental Health
DiscussionAs detailed above, the “elements” in both a classical and a contemporary sense have effects on our mental health and are potentially modifiable aspects that can be harnessed as therapeutic interventions. The most robust interventional evidence currently available shows tentative support for several use of the elements via horticultural and nature-exposure therapy, green exercise/physical activity, sauna and heat therapy, balneotherapy, and breathing exercises. It should be noted that, in many cases, these interventions were not studied in definitive diagnosed psychiatric disorders and thus it is pre...

How Did Medtronic ’s HVAD Perform in LATERAL Trial?
Medtronic’s HeartWare HVAD pump system could get a significant boost after performing well in the LATERAL clinical trial. The Dublin-based company presented results from the study at the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs 65th Annual Conference, that showed patients who received the system had 95% freedom from disabling stroke at two years. The medtech giant now plans to launch a global registry to collect additional clinical evidence to further characterize survival, adverse events, and economic benefits of the HVAD System. The HVAD Pump is a left ventricle assist device (LVAD) approved in t...

Autonomic cardiovascular control changes in recent heart transplant recipients lead to physiological limitations in response to orthostatic challenge and isometric exercise
ConclusionHTxRs are characterized by elevated blood pressures and total peripheral resistance at supine rest as well as attenuated blood pressures and total peripheral resistance responses during orthostatic challenge, possibly caused by low-pressure cardiopulmonary baroreceptor denervation. In addition, HTxRs show attenuated cardiac output response during isometric exercise due to efferent sympathetic denervation. These physiological limitations might have negative functional consequences.

The Impact of Statin Therapy on Neurological Events Following Left Ventricular Assist System Implantation in Advanced Heart Failure
Stroke is a leading cause of disability and death in advanced heart failure patients supported with continuous-flow left ventricular assist systems (CF-LVAS). Statins (HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors) reduce the risk of major cardiovascular and neurological events, such as stroke, but their impact has not been evaluated in patients implanted with CF-LVAS. We sought to explore the association between use of statin therapy and subsequent occurrence of neurological events, particularly stroke, following CF-LVAS implantation.

Unusual Symptoms of Coronavirus: What We Know So Far
While most people are familiar with the hallmark symptoms of COVID-19 by now—cough, fever, muscle aches, headaches and difficulty breathing—a new crop of medical conditions are emerging from the more than 4 million confirmed cases of the disease around the world. These include skin rashes, diarrhea, kidney abnormalities and potentially life-threatening blood clots. It’s not unusual for viruses to directly infect and affect different tissues and organs in the body, but it is a bit unusual for a primarily respiratory virus like SARS-CoV-2, which is responsible for COVID-19, to have such a wide-ranging reach...
