Outcomes of Patients Undergoing Cardiac Catheterization After a Three-Day Holiday Weekend Versus a Two-Day Weekend
CONCLUSIONS: Cardiac catheterization procedures performed after a 3-day weekend were not associated with differences in in-patient mortality, myocardial infarction, stroke, or procedural complications.PMID:34740172

Rural-urban disparities in baseline health factors and procedure outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: Our study identified rural-urban differences in baseline factors and procedural outcomes in patients presenting to a tertiary care center for cardiac procedures. Providers should anticipate that health disparities may be associated with more intervention and worse outcomes in their rural patients. Being aware of such differences may also help policy makers in directing health care funding to lower gaps in health care and access ultimately leading to better health outcomes.PMID:35109969 | DOI:10.1016/j.jnma.2022.01.001

Biventricular Pressure-Volume Loop Assessment Before and After Pulmonary Valve Replacement in Tetralogy of Fallot
Patients with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) may undergo pulmonary valve replacement (PVR) after initial full repair. We investigated indices of biventricular function, work and efficiency of TOF patients' using noninvasive pressure-volume (PV) loop analysis on cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) images and compared pre-and post PVR groups. Biventricular segmentations of steady state free precession CMR images were performed using custom validated software (Segment version 2.0 R7067). Brachial cuff pressure estimated left ventricular (LV) systolic pressure. Right ventricular (RV) inputs were obtained from pre-PVR cardiac ca...

Right ventricular longitudinal function is linked to left ventricular filling pressure in patients with repaired tetralogy of fallot
AbstractExperimental data on pulmonary regurgitation has linked right ventricular longitudinal function to left ventricular filling pressure in animals with induced and treated pulmonary regurgitation but this relationship has not been investigated in patients with repaired Tetralogy of Fallot (rToF). The aim of this study was to determine if right ventricular longitudinal function assessed using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is associated with left ventricular filling pressure in patients with rToF. A second objective of this study was to determine if direction of septal movement is related to right ventricular ...

Elevated plasma WIF ‐1 levels are associated with worse prognosis in heart failure with pulmonary hypertension
ConclusionsThe present study demonstrated that LHF-PH patients have higher plasma WIF-1 levels than healthy controls, suggesting that plasma WIF-1 may be a potential future prognostic biomarker in LHF-PH. Its prognostic capability could be further refined by including it in a multi-marker panel. Further studies are needed to establish the potential role of WIF-1 in LHF-PH pathophysiology in larger cohorts to determine its clinical applicability.

Acute beat blockade improves right ventricular diastolic filling in pulmonary arterial hypertension: a rodent CMR and clinical human pressure-volume study
Conclusions: Esmolol improves RV diastolic filling in PAH at rest and during low-grade exercise, preserving SV and CO, with energetically favourable effects on contractile efficiency.

Concomitant latent pulmonary vascular disease leads to impaired global cardiac performance in HFpEF
ConclusionsLatent PVD is a feature of HFpEF and is associated with impaired RV functional reserve, global diastolic filling and LV-CI. This can be quantified by CMR and used to identify patients likely to benefit from IASD implantation.

Concomitant latent pulmonary vascular disease leads to impaired global cardiac performance in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction
ConclusionsLatent PVD is a feature of HFpEF and is associated with impaired RV functional reserve, global diastolic filling and LV-CI. This can be quantified by CMR and used to identify patients likely to benefit from IASD implantation.

A Clinical Phenotype of Adverse Response to Biventricular Pacing: A Case Series
ConclusionsA phenotype of adverse response to biventricular pacing is characterized by relatively narrow QRS duration, RV dysfunction, and pulmonary hypertension. Clinical decline is rapid and associated with the development of RBBB‐type morphology, worsening of pulmonary hemodynamics, and RV dysfunction with biventricular pacing.

Impact of advanced age on the safety and effectiveness of paclitaxel‐eluting stent implantation in patients with ST‐segment elevation myocardial infarction undergoing primary angioplasty: The HORIZONS‐AMI trial
Conclusions: For STEMI patients undergoing primary PCI, the implantation of PES as compared with BMS reduced ischemic TVR, and this effect was independent of age. [NCT00433966] © 2013 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.

Amplatzer left atrial appendage occlusion: Single center 10‐year experience
ConclusionLAA closure may be a good alternative to oral anticoagulation. This hypothesis needs to be tested in a randomized clinical trial to ensure that all potential biases of this observational study are accounted for. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

SIldenafil and Diastolic Dysfunction after Acute Myocardial Infarction in Patients with Preserved Ejection Fraction: SIDAMI.
CONCLUSIONS: Sildenafil did not decrease filling pressure at rest or during exercise in post-MI patients with diastolic dysfunction. However, there were effects on secondary endpoints which require further studies. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION INFORMATION: http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01046838. Identifier: NCT01046838. Late MitraClip procedure after left atrial appendage occlusion: Indication and procedure description
We report the first human case of percutaneous edge‐to‐edge mitral valve repair using MitraClip System (Abbott Vascular, Abbott Park, IL, USA) in a patient previously undergone left atrial appendage closure with PLAATOTM System (ev3. Inc., Plymouth, Minnesota). The procedure was successfully performed using the standard MitraClip technique, in the catheterization laboratory, with transesophageal echocardiographic and fluoroscopic guidance. We showed that a double percutaneous procedure for stroke prevention and mitral regurgitation treatment might be a valid approach in selected patients ineligible for chronic anticoag...

Complications after transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve replacement with a balloon‐expandable prosthesis: The importance of preventative measures and contingency planning
Abstract Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) with balloon‐expandable Edwards‐SAPIEN valve was superior to standard therapy in inoperable patients and non‐inferior to surgical aortic valve replacement in high surgical‐risk, but operable patients, with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis in the randomized controlled PARTNER trial. Since the first case of TAVR with a balloon‐expandable valve in 2002, several groups have reported their experience with balloon‐expandable valves with high‐procedural success. In the United States, the balloon‐expandable Edwards‐SAPIEN valve is the only transcatheter hea...
