Racial Differences in Incidence and Clinical Course of Atrial Fibrillation and What Remains to be Investigated
Abstract There are many risk factors identified for atrial fibrillation (AF), some of which differ between blacks and whites. These differences and differences in stroke occurrence and clinical course of AF between blacks and whites are reviewed. Risk factors identified to date include age, white race, male sex, body mass index (BMI) ≥30, height ≥173 cm, weight, increased waist circumference, higher levels of systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), increased pulse pressure, diagnosis of hypertension, antihypertensive medication use, HDL <40 mg/dL, triglycerides >200 mg/dL, lower heart rate...

Early and late clinical outcomes of endovascular, surgical, and hybrid revascularization strategies of combined carotid and coronary artery diseases: the FRIENDS study group (Finalized Research In ENDovascular Strategies)
The best therapeutic strategy for patients with concomitant carotid obstructive disease (COD) and coronary artery disease (CAD) remains controversial. The aim of the study is to observe post-procedural and 1-year clinical outcomes of patients with COD and CAD after an endovascular, surgical, or a combined (hybrid) revascularization approach, selected by consensus of a multidisciplinary team. Between January 2006 and December 2012, 1043 consecutive patients with COD and concomitant CAD were treated. According to treatment strategies, patients were divided into three groups: surgical: 391 patients (37.1%), endovascular: 502 ...

Antiplatelet therapy in Takotsubo cardiomyopathy: does it improve cardiovascular outcomes during index event?
Abstract Plasma catecholamines may play an important role in Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) pathophysiology. Patients with disproportionately high catecholamine responses to stressful events are prone to worse clinical outcomes. Catecholamines stimulate platelet activation and, therefore, may determine the clinical presentation and outcomes of TCM. We conducted a retrospective, descriptive study TCM patients admitted between 2003 and 2013 to Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia, PA, USA and Danbury Hospital, Danbury, CT, USA. A total of 206 patients met Modified Mayo TCM criteria. Using a multiple logistic model,...

Anticoagulation therapy in elderly patients with atrial fibrillation: results from the Registry of Atrial Fibrillation To Investigate the Implementation of New Guidelines (RAFTING)
Background: Patients with atrial fibrillation aged 75 years or older have a CHA2DS2VASc score that dictates oral anticoagulants. We recorded physicians’ anticoagulation attitudes in elderly patients with atrial fibrillation and assessed the impact of stroke and bleeding risk. Methods: Atrial Fibrillation To Investigate the Implementation of New Guidelines , a countrywide prospective registry performed in Greece during 2010, a period when only vitamin-K antagonists (VKA) were available, enrolled 1127 patients with atrial fibrillation diagnosis during Emergency Departments visit in 31 representative hospitals; 807 patient...

Stent Versus Non-Stent in Treating Intermediate Stenosis Culprit Lesions in Acute ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction Patients.
Authors: Dai J, Lyu S, Song X, Zhang M, Nie S, Gao H, Zeng Y, Wang W, Zhang M, Zhang D, Tian J Abstract To investigate the efficacy and safety of stent versus non-stent in treating acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients with single vessel disease and intermediate stenosis culprit lesions.Between September 2009 and May 2015, 475 acute STEMI patients (time from symptom onset < 12 hours) with single vessel disease and intermediate stenosis culprit lesions were retrospectively studied at Beijing Anzhen Hospital. The patients were divided into a stent group (n = 308) and non-stent group (n ...

Inappropriate left ventricular hypertrophy as a tool for risk stratification in patients with essential hypertension
Publication date: Available online 1 August 2017 Source:Cor et Vasa Author(s): Sergiy Lozinsky The alternative method of appropriate left ventricular mass prediction in subjects with normal BP and arterial hypertension was proposed. Also the associations of new indicator of LVM inappropriateness with myocardial infarction, stroke and persistent atrial fibrillation were studied. The study consisted of 2 stages. On the first stage 630 untreated hypertensive patients and 206 normotensive persons were studied using methods of office blood pressure (OBP) measurement, echocardiography (ECG), ambulatory blood pressure monitoring...

Abstract 175: Atrial Fibrillation in the USF Resident Clinics: Quality-Driven Medical Therapy Session Title: Poster Session AM
Patients with atrial fibrillation (afib) have a high rate of serious complications including stroke and decompensated heart failure. While patients with afib are five times more likely to suffer a stroke in their lifetime than the general population, this risk can be reduced by 64% with appropriate anticoagulation using warfarin or approved novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs). Reducing the morbidity and mortality from excess strokes is a common interest nationwide due to unsustainable healthcare costs, increasing human resource gaps in medicine, and payment reforms that hold physicians and healthcare organizations financiall...

ARENA-Project atrial fibrillation in the Rhein-Neckar region.
Authors: Baumann S, Grau A, Senges J, Schneider S, Alonso A, Katus HA, Thomas D, Waldecker B, Haass M, Zahn R, Zeymer U, Akin I, Kruska M, Fischer C, Borggrefe M Abstract Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common form of cardiac tachyarrhythmia. It is estimated that in the Rhein-Neckar region approximately 40,000-50,000 out of 2 million people are affected. Due to demographic changes in the near future there will be a significant increase in the prevalence of AF within the next decades. The ARENA project was initiated by the Foundation Institute for Cardiac Infarction Research (IHF) Ludwigshafen in cooperat...

Impact of Atrial Fibrillation on In-Hospital Mortality and Thromboembolic Complications after Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation
AbstractThe association between atrial fibrillation (AF) and thromboembolic (TE) complications in left ventricular assist device (LVAD) recipients is controversial, and there is paucity of large-scale data evaluating the impact of AF on early outcomes after device implantation. Using the National Inpatient Sample, we identified hospitalizations where patients underwent LVAD implantation from 2010 to 2015. Multivariate logistic regression was used to evaluate the association of AF on in-hospital outcomes. A total of 18,378 patients (41.7% with AF) underwent LVAD implantation. Patients with AF were older (59.9 vs. 54.0  yea...
