Healthcare-associated infections in a newly opened pediatric intensive care unit in Turkey: Results of four-year surveillance
Conclusions: Our rate of HAIs is higher than the mean rates reported in PICU studies from developed countries. Active surveillance studies of HAIs is an essential component of infection control, which may contribute to improving preventive strategies in developing countries.

High burden of antimicrobial resistance among gram negative bacteria causing healthcare associated infections in a critical care unit of Nepal
ConclusionHealthcare associated infections are very common in our ICU. Gram negative bacterial pathogens are major culprits associated with these infections and there is alarming state of drug resistance among these isolates. Continuous surveillance and establishment of preventive and control measures of healthcare associated infections are urgently needed in our setting.

Ventilator Associated Pneumonia in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit: Incidence, Risk Factors and Etiological Agents
ConclusionsVentilator associated pneumonia is an important complication in children receiving mechanical ventilation in PICU and Gram negative bacilli (Acinetobacter andPseudomonas) being the important causative agents. Ventilator associated tracheobronchitis is an emerging entity; recognition and treatment of same might prevent the development of VAP.

Things Are Not Always What They Seem: Two Cases of Child Maltreatment Presenting With Common Pediatric Chief Complaints
We describe 2 cases of child maltreatment who presented as common pediatric conditions: preseptal cellulitis and gastroenteritis. The first case is an 8-year-old girl who presented with progressive right eye pain, swelling, and discharge. She was initially treated for preseptal cellulitis, but eye cultures ultimately grew Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Further investigation revealed sexual abuse by a male family member. The second case is a 2-year-old previously healthy girl who presented with 6 hours of emesis, lethargy, and abdominal pain. Initially attributed to viral gastroenteritis, her serum blood urea nitrogen and creatinin...

Association of high mortality with extended –spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) positive cultures in community acquired infections
Publication date: April 2018 Source:Journal of Critical Care, Volume 44 Author(s): Sumit Ray, Dimple Anand, Sankalp Purwar, Arijit Samanta, Kaustubh V. Upadhye, Prasoon Gupta, Debashis Dhar Purpose Infections due to multidrug resistant organisms have become a serious health concern worldwide. The present study was conducted to investigate the spectrum of microbial resistance pattern in the community and their effects on mortality. Methods A retrospective review and analysis of prospectively collected data was done of all patients admitted with diagnosis of sepsis in two tertiary care ICU's for a period of two years. Demog...

Invasive Yersiniosis in a Pediatric Patient With β-Thalassemia Major: Acute Decompensation After Rapid Blood Transfusion
Yersinia enterocolitica infection, or yersiniosis, is a common cause of gastroenteritis in developing nations, but the disease is less common in the developed world. Yersiniosis typically presents as a self-limited gastroenteritis in an immunocompetent patient and rarely progresses to the more fulminant disseminated form. Certain patient populations are at greater risk of disseminated disease, and providers caring for these patients should have heightened suspicion for invasive disease. Patients dependent on serial transfusion therapy, such as those with inherited hemoglobinopathies, often have chronically elevated serum i...

Predictors of Mortality in Children Admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit with Acute Gastroenteritis with Severe Dehydration
The objective of the present study was to identify risk factors for mortality at admission in children admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) with acute gastroenteritis (AGE) with severe dehydration and shock. This was a retrospective chart review of all cases of AGE with severe dehydration and shock admitted to the PICU from 2012 to 2017. Children who died during hospital stay were compared with those who survived. A total of 62 children were admitted with AGE to the PICU during this period. Twenty-four children (39%) died. The following variables were found to be significantly associated with death on univa...

Impact of Dexamethasone on pathogen profile of COVID-19 patients requiring intensive care: a multicentre retrospective study
Conclusions: Dexamethasone leads to a shift of bacterial and fungal pathogens in ICU-treated COVID-19 patients. This shift should be considered when empirical antibiotic therapy is administered.

The antibiotic resistance profiles of bacterial strains isolated from patients with hospital-acquired bloodstream and urinary tract infections.
Authors: Ghadiri H, Vaez H, Khosravi S, Soleymani E Abstract Treatment of nosocomial infections is becoming difficult due to the increasing trend of antibiotics resistance. Current knowledge on antibiotic resistance pattern is essential for appropriate therapy. We aimed to evaluate antibiotic resistance profiles in nosocomial bloodstream and urinary tract pathogens. A total of 129 blood stream and 300 urinary tract positive samples were obtained from patients referring to Besat hospital over a two-year period (2009 and 2010). Antibiotic sensitivity was ascertained using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion technique acco...
