Anim Reprod Sci. 2023 Sep 2;257:107328. doi: 10.1016/j.anireprosci.2023.107328. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe current review collected and analyzed research on clinical endometritis (CE) and subclinical endometritis (SCE) in dromedary camels in terms of definition and clinical presentation, etiopathogenesis, diagnostic biomarkers, and treatment protocols. CE is characterized by uterine inflammation with abnormal vaginal discharges, while SCE comprises uterine inflammation with no clinical signs and is described as the infiltration of polymorphnuclear cells into the endometrium. CE is the prevalent clinical finding of b...

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) extracted from < em > Bacteroides vulgatus < /em > effectively prevents LPS extracted from < em > Escherichia coli < /em > from inducing epithelial ‑mesenchymal transition
In conclusion, the present study demonstrated that BV‑LPS is able to effectively prevent EC‑LPS‑induced EMT in A549 cells and in mouse lung tissue and furthermore, the underlying mechanism may be associated with inhibition of the TLR4/BAMBI/Snail signaling pathway.PMID:37681466 | DOI:10.3892/mmr.2023.13082

Rectal temperature after hypoxia-ischemia predicts white matter and cortical pathology in the near-term ferret
CONCLUSION: In near-term-equivalent ferrets, nesting RT 1 h after HIH may predict long-term neuropathological outcomes.IMPACT: High-throughput methods to determine injury severity prior to treatment in animal studies of neonatal brain injury are lacking. In a gyrified animal model of neonatal inflammation-sensitized hypoxic-ischemic brain injury in the ferret, rectal temperature 1 h after hypoxia predicts animals who will have increased cortical pathology and white matter changes on MRI. These changes parallel similar responses in rodents and humans but have not previously been correlated with long-term neuropathological o...

Synthesis of novel naphthalene-chimonanthine scaffolds hybrids with potent antibacterial or antifungal activity
Nat Prod Res. 2023 Oct-Nov;37(19):3261-3266. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2022.2067851. Epub 2022 Apr 24.ABSTRACTIn this work, a total of 19 novel naphthalene hybrids with chimonanthine scaffolds were efficiently synthesised from indole-3-acetonitrile in good yields. The prepared compounds were evaluated for biological activity against Cryptococcus neoformans, Escherichia coli, Shigella spp, Candida albicans, Salmonella spp, and Staphylococcus aureus. The preliminary bioassays showed that most of the synthesised compounds exhibited significant antibacterial or antifungal activity. Notably, compound 8 showed potent activity agains...

DamID-seq: A Genome-Wide  DNA Methylation Method that Captures Both Transient and Stable TF-DNA Interactions in Plant Cells
Methods Mol Biol. 2023;2698:87-107. doi: 10.1007/978-1-0716-3354-0_7.ABSTRACTCapturing the dynamic and transient interactions of a transcription factor (TF) with its genome-wide targets whose regulation leads to plants' adaptation to their changing environment is a major technical challenge. This is a widespread problem with biochemical methods such as chromatin immunoprecipitation-sequencing (ChIP-seq) which are biased towards capturing stable TF-target gene interactions. Herein, we describe how DNA adenine methyltransferase identification and sequencing (DamID-seq) can be used to capture both transient and stable TF-targ...

Selection for antimicrobial prophylaxis in emergency and elective transurethral procedures: Susceptibility pattern in T ürkiye
CONCLUSION: We found that currently recommended antimicrobials provide poor coverage for the most common pathogens isolated. Urologists should consider patient-based antibiotic prophylaxis in endoscopic urethral procedures, follow appropriate proto-cols, and consider local antibiotic resistance.PMID:37681729 | DOI:10.14744/tjtes.2023.99663

Unsaturated fatty acid synthesis in bacteria: Mechanisms and regulation of canonical and remarkably noncanonical pathways
Biochimie. 2023 Sep 6:S0300-9084(23)00216-X. doi: 10.1016/j.biochi.2023.09.007. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUnsaturated phospholipid acyl chains are required for membrane function in most bacteria. The double bonds of the cis monoenoic chains arise by two distinct pathways depending on whether oxygen is required. The oxygen-independent pathway (traditionally called the anaerobic pathway) introduces the cis double bond by isomerization of the trans double bond intermediate of the fatty acid elongation cycle. Double bond isomerization occurs at an intermediate chain length (e.g., C10) and the isomerization product is elong...

Antibacterial activity and mechanisms of α-terpineol against foodborne pathogenic bacteria
This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activities of α-terpineol against common foodborne pathogenic bacteria by agar well diffusion, broth microdilution, and colony counting assay. Propulsive research was conducted to reveal the antibacterial mechanisms, including morphology, infrared spectroscopy, membrane fluidity, membrane permeability, proton motive force, and oxidative phosphorylation. Results indicated that the antibacterial activity of α-terpineol decreased in the following order: Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella typhimurium, Listeria monocytogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus. With an initial cell coun...

Efficient production of α-ketoglutaric acid using an economical double-strain cultivation and catalysis system
Appl Microbiol Biotechnol. 2023 Sep 8. doi: 10.1007/s00253-023-12757-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe whole-cell catalysis strategy of alpha-ketoglutaric acid (α-KG) production from L-glutamic acid (L-Glu) using recombinant Escherichia coli, in which L-glutamate oxidase (LGox) was over-expressed, has replaced the traditional chemical synthesis strategy. However, large amounts of toxic by-product, H2O2, should be eliminated through co-expressing catalase (Cat), thus severely increasing burden in cells. To efficiently and economically produce α-KG, here, the genes SpLGox (from Streptomyces platensis NTU3304) and SlCat ...

A soft multifunctional film from chitosan modified with disulfide bond cross-links and prepared by a simple method
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 6:126774. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126774. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChitosan was modified with thioctic acid and used to prepare soft films. As confirmed by FTIR and XPS measurements, a condensation reaction occurred between the amino groups in the chitosan and the carboxyl groups in the lipoic acid to form amide bonds in the modified chitosan. Films were then prepared by casting at ambient conditions, and the effects of the chemical modification on the physical-mechanical, antibacterial, and thermal properties of the films were investigated. The results showed that the tensile streng...

Peripheral substitution effects on unnatural base pairs: A case of brominated TPT3 to enhance replication fidelity
Bioorg Chem. 2023 Aug 30;140:106827. doi: 10.1016/j.bioorg.2023.106827. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe high fidelity poses a central role in developing unnatural base pairs (UBPs), which means the high pairing capacity of unnatural bases with their partners, and low mispairing with all the natural bases. Different strategies have been used to develop higher-fidelity UBPs, including optimizing hydrophobic interaction forces between UBPs. Variant substituent groups are allowed to fine tune the hydrophobic forces of different UBPs' candidates. However, the modifications on the skeleton of TPT3 base are rare and the replica...
