Mobile Technology to Monitor and Support Health and Well-Being: Qualitative Study of Perspectives and Design Suggestions From Patients Undergoing Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation
CONCLUSIONS: Participants openly expressed their eagerness to participate in research studies that foster connection and positive relationships with their caregivers as well as with other HCT patients. They emphasized the significance of having access to nutritional support or guidance and highlighted the potential benefits of using mobile technology to enhance these collective efforts.TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04094844; https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT04094844.INTERNATIONAL REGISTERED REPORT IDENTIFIER (IRRID): RR2-10.2196/19288.PMID:37651172 | DOI:10.2196/49806

Pediatric hematology and oncology physician and nurse practitioner views of the HPV vaccine and barriers to administration
Hum Vaccin Immunother. 2023 Aug 1;19(2):2224089. doi: 10.1080/21645515.2023.2224089.ABSTRACTRates of Human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination among pediatric survivors of cancer and patients with sickle cell disease are lower than the national average. While recent attention has focused on patient HPV vaccine hesitancy and refusal, less is known about provider-level and system-level barriers to vaccinations in pediatric hematology/oncology (PHO) populations. Applying thematic analysis to qualitative interviews with 20 pediatric hematology/oncology physicians and nurse practitioners, we examine their views regarding HPV vacc...

Stem Cell Implants: Emerging Innovation for Stroke Recovery
J Neuro Oncol Res. 2023;3(1):3102. Epub 2023 Apr 30.ABSTRACTStroke is a debilitating neurovascular injury that those effects hundreds of thousands of Americans each year. Despite the high prevalence, disease morbidity and mortality, options for stroke intervention and rehabilitation are still limited. Stem cells have shown promise in stroke treatment due to their ability to self-renew and differentiate into different cell types. The primary sources of stem cells used today are bone marrow and fetal brain tissue, with mesenchymal stem cells, bone marrow stem cells and neural stem cells being particularly well-studied. By se...

Barriers and facilitators to cord blood banking among pregnant women at a university obstetric clinic
This study was done in a primarily rural, southern state, while previous studies were in larger metropolitan areas, yet results are comparable.PMID:37073979 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17366

An 8-step approach for the systematic development of an evidence-based exercise program for patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
ConclusionStrategies to improve adherence to this exercise program and larger sample sizes are needed to adequately test if the developed exercise program may help patients improve physical and hematologic recovery after HSCT. This study may help researchers develop a safe and effective evidence-based exercise program for their intervention studies. Moreover, the developed program may benefit the physical and hematological recovery in patients undergoing HSCT in larger trials, if exercise adherence is improved.Clinical trial registrationhttps://cris.nih.go.kr/cris/search/detailSearch.do?seq=24233&search_page=L, identifier KCT 0008269.

What Do Patients Think about Palliative Care? A National Survey of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Recipients
Blood Adv. 2023 Mar 6:bloodadvances.2023009712. doi: 10.1182/bloodadvances.2023009712. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPalliative care (PC) benefits patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) but remains under-utilized. Whereas transplant physicians report concerns regarding how patients perceive PC, HSCT recipients' perceptions about PC remain unaddressed. We conducted a multi-site cross-sectional survey of autologous and allogeneic HSCT recipients 3-12 months post-transplant to assess their familiarity, knowledge, and perception of PC, as well as their unmet PC needs. We computed a composite score o...

Implementation of a Structured Process for Clinically Indicated Testing for < em > Clostridioides difficile < /em > Infections in Pediatric Oncology and Stem Cell Transplant
Discussion: This intervention led to fewer CDI tests ordered, but CDI incidence and test positivity proportion increased. This is likely reflective of better-targeted testing for CDI and the identification of true-positive cases of infection, but we cannot rule out a coincident increase in CDI activity during the study period. Through education and electronic reminders of the clinical indicators for testing for CDI, the frequency of testing for C. difficile was reduced.PMID:36691391 | DOI:10.1177/27527530221140063

Parent caregivers' preferences and satisfaction with currently provided childhood cancer survivorship care
CONCLUSION: Parent caregivers were substantially dissatisfied with currently provided care, especially regarding the health issues not directly associated with the primary cancer. Parent caregivers' preferences for survivorship care provider is influenced by multiple factors, including age and survival time of CCSs, characteristics of parent caregivers, satisfaction level with care, and specific survivorship care contents.IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS: The findings of our study suggest that shared survivorship care for CCSs with consideration of specific care contents can complement the current oncologist-led survivors...

Compassionate de-escalation of life-sustaining treatments in pediatric oncology: An opportunity for palliative care and intensive care collaboration
CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric oncology patients undergoing de-escalation of LSTs experience symptoms of pain, anxiety, and respiratory distress during EOL. Dexmedetomidine and propofol may help prevent and/or relieve suffering during compassionate de-escalation of LSTs. Further efforts to optimize institutional policies, education, and collaborations between pediatric intensivists and PC teams are needed.PMID:36313632 | PMC:PMC9606590 | DOI:10.3389/fonc.2022.1017272

Insights into hepatitis E virus epidemiology in Croatia
CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that individuals in professional contact with animals and LTRs are at higher risk for HEV infection. In addition, age is a significant risk factor for HEV seropositivity.PMID:36312833 | PMC:PMC9611701 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v28.i37.5494
