Pharmacotherapy and Nutritional Supplements for Neovascular Eye Diseases
Medicina (Kaunas). 2023 Jul 20;59(7):1334. doi: 10.3390/medicina59071334.ABSTRACTIn this review, we aim to provide an overview of the recent findings about the treatment of neovascular retinal diseases. The use of conventional drugs and nutraceuticals endowed with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may support conventional therapies will be considered, with the final aim of achieving risk reduction (prevention) and outcome improvement (cooperation between treatments) of such sight-threatening proliferative retinopathies. For this purpose, we consider a medicinal product one that contains well-defined compoun...

Involvement of the SIRT1-NLRP3 pathway in the inflammatory response
Cell Commun Signal. 2023 Jul 28;21(1):185. doi: 10.1186/s12964-023-01177-2.ABSTRACTThe silent information regulator 2 homolog 1-NACHT, LRR and PYD domains-containing protein 3 (SIRT1-NLRP3) pathway has a crucial role in regulation of the inflammatory response, and is closely related to the occurrence and development of several inflammation-related diseases. NLRP3 is activated to produce the NLRP3 inflammasome, which leads to activation of caspase-1 and cleavage of pro-interleukin (IL)-1β and pro-IL-18 to their active forms: IL-1β and IL-18, respectively. They are proinflammatory cytokines which then cause an inflammatory...

Cancer-associated immune cells and their modulation by melatonin
Immunopharmacol Immunotoxicol. 2023 Jul 25:1-25. doi: 10.1080/08923973.2023.2239489. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRapidly growing evidence suggests that immune cells play a key role in tumor progression. Tumor cells are surrounded by a microenvironment composed of different cell populations including immune cells. The cross talk between tumor cells and the mentioned neighboring microenvironment is an important factor to take into account while designing tumor therapies. Despite significant advances in immunotherapy strategies, a relatively small proportion of patients have successfully responded to them. Therefore, the se...

Common alterations in plasma free amino acid profiles and gut microbiota-derived tryptophan metabolites of five types of cancer patients
This study provides evidence that common alterations of the metabolites mentioned above suggest their role in the pathogenesis of each cancer patient. It was suggested that multivariate models based on PFAA profiles and tryptophan metabolites might be applicable in the screening of cancer patients.PMID:37490156 | DOI:10.1007/s00726-023-03308-y

Effect of Melatonin on Increasing the Effectiveness of Liver Preservation Solution
CONCLUSION: When the findings were evaluated, intraperitoneal administration of melatonin, a cytoprotective antioxidant, was found to play an effective role in preserving immunohistochemical and biochemical properties of liver tissue integrity and hepatocytes in University of Wisconsin solution.PMID:37485562 | DOI:10.5152/tjg.2023.22694

Enhancement of the SESN2-SHP cascade by melatonin ameliorates hepatic gluconeogenesis by inhibiting the CRBN-BTG2-CREBH signaling pathway
Exp Mol Med. 2023 Jul 24. doi: 10.1038/s12276-023-01040-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMelatonin is involved in the regulation of various biological functions. Here, we explored a novel molecular mechanism by which the melatonin-induced sestrin2 (SESN2)-small heterodimer partner (SHP) signaling pathway protects against fasting- and diabetes-mediated hepatic glucose metabolism. Various key gene expression analyses were performed and multiple metabolic changes were assessed in liver specimens and primary hepatocytes of mice and human participants. The expression of the hepatic cereblon (CRBN) and b-cell translocation gene ...
