Using the Slug Mucosal Irritation Assay to Investigate the Tolerability of Tablet Excipients on Human Skin in the Context of the Use of a Nipple Shield Delivery System
ConclusionThese promising good tolerability results support the continued investigation of these excipients within NSDS rapidly disintegrating tablet formulations. Topical local tolerance effects being almost entirely limited to irritation, the slug assay potentially adds to the existing preformulation toolbox, and may sit in between thein vitro and existingin vivo assays.

Several problem nutrients are identified in the complementary diet of 6 to 11 month old breastfed children in Western Guatemala.
CONCLUSIONS: The intake of micronutrients during the first six months of the recommend CF period in Guatemala has a number of notable inadequacies, but the gaps are narrower than traditionally reported for this age group in low-income settings. PMID: 30272857 [PubMed - in process]

Very Low Birth Weight Infants in a Portuguese Intensive Care Unit and the Vermont Oxford Network: 15 Years of Registry Data.
CONCLUSION: This study allowed us to compare our population of very low birth weight newborns with those registered in the network. We have verified that we have been accompanying the evolution of Neonatology over the past years and we have identified areas for improvement. PMID: 31703180 [PubMed - in process]

Nutraceuticals and migraine: further strategy for the treatment of specific conditions
AbstractNutraceuticals might be defined as food or dietary supplements that provide medicinal or health benefits. Current preventive treatment of migraine includes nutraceuticals as well as conventional drugs. These non-pharmacological therapies, such as magnesium, coenzyme Q10, feverfew, riboflavin, and phycocyanins, are particularly useful in certain categories of patients (adolescents, pregnant or breastfeeding women, the elderly with complex drug therapy, the patient with contraindication to the usual pharmacological therapies) when a conventional drug therapy cannot be prescribed or may be not well tolerated. The evid...

Elemental composition of primary lamellar bone differs between parous and nulliparous rhesus macaque females
by Paola Cerrito, Bin Hu, Justin Z. Goldstein, Rachel Kalisher, Shara E. Bailey, Timothy G. Bromage Extracting life history information from mineralized hard tissues of extant and extinct species is an ongoing challenge in evolutionary and conservation studies. Primary lamellar bone is a mineralized tissue with multidien periodicity that begins deposition prenatally and continues until adulthood albeit with concurrent resorption, thus maintaining a record spanning several years of an individual’s life. Here, we use field-emission scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis to measure the relative c...

Intravenous and nebulized magnesium sulfate for treating acute asthma in adults and children: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusion: The use of intravenous magnesium sulfate, in addition to β2-agonists and systemic steroids, in the treatment of acute asthma appears to produce benefits with respect to improve pulmonary function and reduce the number of hospital admissions for children, and only improve pulmonary function for adults. However, the use of nebulized magnesium sulfate just appears to produce benefits for adults.

Early and late renal adverse effects after potentially nephrotoxic treatment for childhood cancer.
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of renal adverse events after treatment with cisplatin, carboplatin, ifosfamide, radiation therapy involving the kidney region and/or nephrectomy ranged from 0% to 84%. With currently available evidence, it was not possible to draw any conclusions with regard to prevalence of and risk factors for renal adverse effects. Future studies should focus on adequate study design and reporting and should deploy multivariate risk factor analysis to correct for possible confounding. Until more evidence becomes available, CCS should be enrolled into long-term follow-up programmes to monitor their renal func...

Aloe vera for prevention and treatment of infusion phlebitis.
CONCLUSIONS: There is no strong evidence for preventing or treating infusion phlebitis with external application of Aloe vera. The current available evidence is limited by the poor methodological quality and risk of selective outcome reporting of the included studies, and by variation in the size of effect across the studies. The positive effects observed with external application of Aloe vera in preventing or treating infusion phlebitis compared with no intervention or external application of 33% or 50% MgSO4 should therefore be viewed with caution. Prophylactic Magnesium Sulfate for Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Abstract Delayed cerebral ischemia following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage is a cause of considerable morbidity and mortality. Magnesium sulfate has been proposed as a prophylactic intervention for angiographic vasospasm and to improve clinical outcomes. A systematic review was conducted to determine the evidence for the prophylactic use of magnesium sulfate in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Medline, Embase, Cochrane library, clinicaltrials.gov, and controlled-trials.com were searched with a comprehensive search strategy. 2,035 records were identified in the initial search and 1,574 remained after remov...

Histomorphometric Results in Ridge Preservation Procedures Comparing Various Graft Materials in Extraction Sockets With Nongrafted Sockets in Humans: A Systematic Review
Conclusion:When comparing ridge preservation with NH, only 3 studies encountered a greater amount of newly formed bone in the ridge preservation group, whereas the rest did not find statistically significant differences or even observed a greater percentage of newly formed bone in the control group. Therefore, more studies are needed to determine whether the use of graft materials enhances new bone formation in contrast to NH alone and to determine the most effective bone grafting material.

Role of Mediterranean diet in prevention and management of type 2 diabetes.
CONCLUSIONS: In the modern society, poor dietary habits accompanied by inadequate physical activity are associated with the risk of having obesity and type 2 diabetes. Promoting healthy lifestyle and diet are not only beneficial in the prevention and treatment of various diseases but also important in maintaining the overall health. Switching from unhealthy diet to health-friendly diet such as Mediterranean diet represents healthy lifestyle choice. PMID: 25316244 [PubMed - in process]

Bowel preparation regimens for colon capsule endoscopy: a review
Colon capsule endoscopy (CCE) is being actively evaluated as an emerging complementary or alternative procedure for evaluation of the colon. The yield of CCE is significantly dependent on the quality of bowel preparation. In addition to achieving a stool-free colon the bowel preparation protocols need to decrease bubble effect and aid propulsion of the capsule. An extensive English literature search was done using PubMed with search terms of colon capsule endoscopy, PillCam and bowel preparation. Full-length articles which met the criteria were included for review. A total of 12 studies including 1149 patients were reviewe...

The Acute Treatment of Migraine in Adults: The American Headache Society Evidence Assessment of Migraine Pharmacotherapies
The study aims to provide an updated assessment of the evidence for individual pharmacological therapies for acute migraine treatment. Pharmacological therapy is frequently required for acutely treating migraine attacks. The American Academy of Neurology Guidelines published in 2000 summarized the available evidence relating to the efficacy of acute migraine medications. This review, conducted by the members of the Guidelines Section of the American Headache Society, is an updated assessment of evidence for the migraine acute medications. A standardized literature search was performed to identify articles related to acute ...
