Mothers' and fathers' attitudes toward stuttering in the Middle East compared to Europe and North America
CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: The effect of geographic region and culture may predict sex-based differences among mothers' and fathers' attitudes toward stuttering; however, the clinical significance is unclear. Additional research is needed to better understand how children who stutter are affected by their parents' attitudes toward stuttering.WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on this subject The research clearly indicates that attitudes toward stuttering vary according to geographical region. Less clear is whether mothers and fathers from geographically diverse backgrounds hold different attitudes toward stutteri...

Tele-Neuropsychology: From Science to Policy to Practice
CONCLUSIONS: More studies of the reliability and validity of in-home tele-np-t using randomization methodology are necessary to support inclusion of tele-np-t codes on the CMS and CPT telehealth lists, and subsequently, the integration and delivery of in-home tele-np-t services across providers and institutions. These actions are needed to maintain equitable reimbursement of in-home tele-np-t services and address the widespread disparities in healthcare access.PMID:37715508 | DOI:10.1093/arclin/acad066

Association of psoriasis and stroke in end-stage renal disease patients
CONCLUSIONS: Contrary to prior research in the general population, psoriasis in ESRD patients was not associated with the risk of stroke after controlling for various demographic and clinical parameters. Our finding emphasizes the importance of controlling for a variety of factors in population studies examining associations of diseases and risk factors.PMID:37716600 | DOI:10.1016/j.amjms.2023.09.014

An in vitro evaluation of kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) on the catalytic activity of carboxylesterase 1 (CES1)
Chem Biol Interact. 2023 Sep 14:110715. doi: 10.1016/j.cbi.2023.110715. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTKratom, (Mitragyna Speciosa Korth.) is a plant indigenous to Southeast Asia whose leaves are cultivated for a variety of medicinal purposes and mostly consumed as powders or tea in the United States. Kratom use has surged in popularity with the lay public and is currently being investigated for possible therapeutic benefits including as a treatment for opioid withdrawal due to the pharmacologic effects of its indole alkaloids. A wide array of psychoactive compounds are found in kratom, with mitragynine being the most abund...

Pro-Con Debate: Consideration of Race, Ethnicity, and Gender Is Detrimental to Successful Mentorship
Anesth Analg. 2023 Oct 1;137(4):747-753. doi: 10.1213/ANE.0000000000006502. Epub 2023 Sep 5.ABSTRACTAnesthesiology remains a specialty with low representation of women or members of racial and ethnic groups considered underrepresented in medicine (UiM). In the United States, women account for 33% of anesthesiology residents, while physicians identifying as Black, African American, Latinx, American Indian, or Alaska Native account for approximately 10%. Underrepresentation of these groups is even more pronounced in academic anesthesiology, especially at the senior ranks and roles, such as department chairs. Leaders in the f...

Real-World Utilization of an Intrauterine, Vacuum-Induced, Hemorrhage-Control Device
CONCLUSION: For both vaginal and cesarean births in real-world settings, rapid and effective bleeding control was achieved with an FDA-cleared intrauterine vacuum-induced hemorrhage-control device. The safety profile was consistent with that observed in the registrational trial (NCT02883673), and SAEs or adverse device effects were of the nature and severity expected in the setting of PPH. This device is an important new tool for managing a life-threatening condition, and timely utilization may help to improve obstetric hemorrhage outcomes.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04995887.PMID:37713322 | DOI:10....

Addressing Inequalities in Breast Cancer Care Delivery
Surg Oncol Clin N Am. 2023 Oct;32(4):799-810. doi: 10.1016/j.soc.2023.05.009. Epub 2023 Jun 16.ABSTRACTBreast cancer treatment, timeliness of care, and clinical outcomes are inferior for patients of Black race and Hispanic ethnicity, and the origin of these inequities is multifactorial. Owing to aggregate reporting of data in the United States for patients of Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander ancestry, disparities within and across these groups are difficult to appreciate. In large part due to low prevalence, male breast cancer remains understudied, and treatment algorithms are primarily extrapolated from resear...

The Philadelphia Lung Cancer Learning Community: A Multi-Health-System, Citywide Approach to Lung Cancer Screening
CONCLUSIONS: The sociodemographic characteristics of LCS participants in Philadelphia varied by health system and neighborhood. These results suggest that a multi-center approach to LCS can identify vulnerable areas for future tailored approaches to improving LCS uptake. Future directions should leverage these findings to develop and test collaborative strategies to increase LCS at the community and regional levels.PMID:37713466 | DOI:10.1093/jncics/pkad071

Self-assembling Gn head ferritin nanoparticle vaccine provides full protection from lethal challenge of < em > Dabie bandavirus < /em > in aged ferrets
This study demonstrates that DBV GnH-FT nanoparticles provide an efficient vaccine efficacy in mouse and aged ferret models and should be an outstanding vaccine candidate targeted for the aged population against fatal DBV infection. IMPORTANCE Dabie bandavirus (DBV) is an emerging tick-borne virus that causes severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) in infected patients. Human SFTS symptoms progress from fever, fatigue, and muscle pain to the depletion of white blood cells and platelets with fatality rates up to 30%. The recent spread of its vector tick to over 20 states in the United States increases the potenti...
