Ability to Suppress TGF- β-Activated Myofibroblast Differentiation Distinguishes the Anti-pulmonary Fibrosis Efficacy of Two Danshen-Containing Chinese Herbal Medicine Prescriptions
Conclusion: This study suggests that a clinically efficacious cardiovascular Chinese herbal medicine (DLP) can be successfully repurposed to treat a lung disease in pulmonary fibrosis guided by TCM theory. Our comparative study between DLP and DHP demonstrated a critical requirement of suppressing both pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic pathways for the treatment of pulmonary fibrosis, supporting that a multi-component prescription capable of “removing both phlegm and blood stasis” will better achieve co-protection of heart and lung in PHD. Introduction Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic ...

Anthropometric Obesity Indices were Stronger than CT-Based Indices in Associations with Carotid Intima-Media Thickness in Japanese Men.
CONCLUSIONS: In community-dwelling Japanese men, anthropometric obesity indices, BMI in particular, were more strongly associated with carotid atherosclerosis than CT-based obesity indices. The association of general obesity with carotid atherosclerosis was strong and adding CT-based obesity measure did not considerably influence in the association. Silent Valsalva thrombus between the native Valsalva and balloon-expandable transcatheter heart valve: multicentre Japanese registry analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: Valsalva thrombus was detected in 8.9% of patients following balloon-expandable THV implantation and was common in the LCC, but it did not increase the risk of adverse events after TAVI. PMID: 31746754 [PubMed - in process]

Hypoglossal Nerve Palsy due to Compression by a Persistent Primitive Hypoglossal Artery: Case Report
A 51-year-old Japanese woman was admitted to our hospital because of speech difficulty following severe headache. Neurological examination showed dysarthria and tongue weakness on the right side, indicating right hypoglossal nerve palsy. Needle electromyography of the right side of the tongue showed fibrillation potentials. Magnetic resonance angiography and computed tomography angiography revealed a right, persistent, primitive hypoglossal artery (PPHA) that met Lie's diagnostic criteria. Digital subtraction angiography showed an extended PPHA with irregular caliber in the portion running through the right hypoglossal canal.

Effects of epicardial adipose tissue volume and density on cardiac structure and function in patients free of coronary artery disease
ConclusionBoth large EAT volume and high EAT density were associated with cardiac structure and function in patients with no CAD. The EAT density may render complementary information to EAT volume regarding cardiac geometry changes.

Coronary artery calcification scoring system based on the coronary artery calcium data and reporting system (CAC-DRS) predicts major adverse cardiovascular events or all-cause death in patients with potentially curable lung cancer without a history of cardiovascular disease
In conclusion, the CAC-DRS score on non-gated standard CT can predict incident MACEs and/or all-cause death in patients with potentially curable resected lung cancer. Lung cancer survivors with a greater CAC-DRS category may need more active management of cardiovascular risk factors.

Periprocedural Predictors of New-Onset Conduction Abnormalities After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement.
CONCLUSIONS: Computed tomography assessment of membranous septal anatomy and implantation depth predicted CAs after TAVR with new-generation valves. Future studies are required to identify whether adjustment of the implantation depth can reduce the risk of CAs and adverse clinical outcomes. PMID: 32879221 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Early and Middle-Term Results and Anticoagulation Strategy after Left Atrial Appendage Exclusion Using an Epicardial Clip Device.
CONCLUSION: LAA exclusion using the AtriClip device was a feasible treatment method in terms of its early and middle-term safety and efficacy. In addition, our postoperative anticoagulation strategy could be optimal for maximizing the procedure's merits, although further studies, involving a larger number of patients and longer duration of follow-up, are needed. Randomized Clinical Trial of Endovascular Therapy for Acute Large Vessel Occlusion with Large Ischemic Core (RESCUE-Japan LIMIT): Rationale and Study Protocol
Neurol Med Chir (Tokyo). 2021 Dec 24. doi: 10.2176/nmc.rc.2021-0311. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEndovascular therapy is strongly recommended for acute cerebral large vessel occlusion (LVO) with an Alberta stroke program early computed tomography score (ASPECTS) ≥6 due to occlusion of the internal carotid artery or M1 segment of the middle cerebral artery. However, the effect of endovascular therapy for patients with a large ischemic core with an ASPECTS ≤5 (0-5) was not established. A multicenter, randomized, open-label, parallel-group trial was conducted to investigate the superiority of endovascular therapy over m...
