The European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics Policy Statement No 14: The role of the Medical Physicist in the management of safety within the magnetic resonance imaging environment: EFOMP recommendations
Abstract: This European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics (EFOMP) Policy Statement outlines the way in which a Safety Management System can be developed for MRI units. The Policy Statement can help eliminate or at least minimize accidents or incidents in the magnetic resonance environment and is recommended as a step towards harmonisation of safety of workers, patients, and the general public regarding the use of magnetic resonance imaging systems in diagnostic and interventional procedures.

Factors associated with significant MRI findings in medical walk-in patients with acute headache.
CONCLUSION: Among walk-in patients who underwent MRI for acute headache with low suspicion for intracranial bleeding, 20% had a significant MRI finding. A simple clinical score identified all patients with significant findings that explained the headache. If prospectively validated, this might be a useful tool in selecting those walk-in headache patients requiring urgent cranial MRI. PMID: 28102882 [PubMed - in process]

A review of deep learning based methods for medical image multi-organ segmentation
Medical image segmentation is one of the most important medical image analysis tasks. It has a wide range of applications in imaging systems such as microscopy, X-ray, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET). Medical image segmentation plays an essential role in radiotherapy, which is the standard care for certain cancers [1]. The success of radiotherapy depends highly on accurate irradiation to the target and sparing of organs-at-risk (OARs) [2,3].

Consensus statement for the management of incidentally found brain white matter hyperintensities in general medical practice
Med J Aust. 2023 Aug 21. doi: 10.5694/mja2.52079. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: There is a paradigm shift in our understanding of white matter hyperintensities (WMH) found on brain imaging. They were once thought to be a normal phenomenon of ageing and, therefore, warranted no further investigation. However, evidence now suggests these lesions are markers of poor brain and cardiovascular health, portending an increased risk of stroke, cognitive decline, depression and death. Nevertheless, no specific guidelines exist for the management of incidentally found WMH for general medical practitioners and other clin...

ADDENDUM to EFOMP Policy statement No.14 “The role of the Medical Physicist in the management of safety within the magnetic resonance imaging environment: EFOMP recommendations”
In 2012 EFOMP published Policy Statement No.14 entitled “The Role of the Medical Physicist in the management of safety within the magnetic resonance imaging environment: EFOMP recommendations” [1,2]. The present document is an addendum to the statement, which remains valid.

Complicated abdominal pregnancy with placenta feeding off sacral plexus and subsequent multiple ectopic pregnancies during a 4-year follow-up: a case report
Conclusions Ectopic pregnancies should be identified early and evaluated for the etiology of the presentation. Rarely, an ectopic pregnancy implants at an extratubal location. Today, early intervention saves lives and reduces morbidity, but ectopic pregnancy still accounts for 4 to 10 % of pregnancy-related deaths and leads to a high incidence of ectopic site gestations in future pregnancies. Medical management has emerged as a safe alternative to surgery and holds promise for preservation of future fertility; however, surgery remains an acceptable modality. We found that careful and strategic choice of managem...

Association between Enlarged Axillary Lymph Nodes and Silicone Breast Implant Ruptures seen on Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
CONCLUSIONS: Enlarged axillary nodes were associated with ruptures in two groups of patients. This finding can guide clinical decisions when either enlarged nodes or ruptures are encountered in patients with silicone implants. The association between silicone lymphadenopathy and implant rupture raises concerns regarding the role of rupture in silicone-induced systemic disease. PMID: 28457073 [PubMed - in process]

Management of delivery of a fetus with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease: a case report of abdominal dystocia and review of the literature
ConclusionsManagement of delivery in cases of suspected autosomal recessive renal polycystic kidney disease needs to be discussed because of the risk of abdominal dystocia. The route and timing of delivery depend on the size of the fetal abdominal circumference and the gestational age. The rate of kidney growth must also be taken into account.

Immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy-associated encephalitis: a case series and review of the literature.
CONCLUSIONS: Encephalitis should be suspected in patients treated with ICIs who present with rapidly evolving confusion. Blood tests, CSF analysis, cerebral MRI and an EEG should be performed. Therapy with intravenous corticosteroids is recommended. Steroid unresponsiveness is rare and should lead to a review of the diagnosis. Alternative treatment options are IVIG, plasma exchange therapy and rituximab. &nbsp. PMID: 33232507 [PubMed - in process]

Expertise Modulates Students ’ Perception of Pain From a Self-Perspective: Quasi-Experimental Study
Conclusions: Virtual dental treatment activates pain-related brain regions in controls. By contrast, dental students suppress affective and motor-related aspects of pain. We speculate that dental students learn to control motoric aspects of pain perception during their education because it is a prerequisite for the professional manual treatment of patients. We discuss that a specific set of learning mechanisms might affect perceived self-efficacy of dental students, which in turn might reduce their affective component of pain perception.

Probing bundle-wise abnormalities in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus using fixel-based analysis: new insights into neurocognitive impairments
CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated the utility of FBA on detecting the WM alterations related to HIV infection. The bundle-wise FBA method provides a new perspective for investigating HIV-induced microstructural and macrostructural WM-related changes, which may help to understand cognitive dysfunction in HIV patients thoroughly.PMID:37605986 | DOI:10.1097/CM9.0000000000002829

Imaging in systemic amyloidosis
Background Diagnosis of systemic amyloidosis remains challenging. Histology, the current gold standard for diagnosis of amyloidosis provides limited information on the extent of the disease and is not useful for monitoring. Non-invasive imaging modalities offer an easy way to evaluate whole-body amyloid burden, accurately identify organ involvement, quantify and monitor disease progression and response to treatment. Sources of data A literature search was performed using PubMed on the subjects of ‘amyloid imaging’, ‘SAP scintigraphy’, ‘imaging in cardiac amyloidosis’, ‘cardiac MRI...
