A call to action; national survey of teaching radiology curriculum to medical students
CONCLUSION: Radiologists are increasing their educational representation in medical school curricula. Despite this, radiology continues to be under-represented with students desiring more exposure to medical imaging. Integrating the student's perceptions with existing curricula suggests that efforts should focus on increasing awareness of which studies are appropriate and teaching students how to systematically interpret an image.PMID:36325497 | PMC:PMC9610045 | DOI:10.25259/JCIS_36_2022

Co-Creating a Culturally Responsive Distance Education Cancer Course with, and for, Alaska’s Community Health Workers: Motivations from a Survey of Key Stakeholders
Abstract To gain input on a proposed culturally responsive, distance-delivered cancer education course informed by empowerment theory and adult-learning principles, Alaska’s Community Health Aides/Practitioners (CHA/Ps) and CHA/P leadership were invited to take an online survey in February 2015. The proposed course will be developed as part of the “Distance Education to Engage Alaskan Community Health Aides in Cancer Control” project. The results of the survey demonstrate that respondents are both interested in taking the proposed class and engaging in course development. The results also indicate that respo...

Abstract A59: Providing care for LGBTQ individuals with cancer: A call for education and training
Conclusions: Survey results indicate that oncology providers in specialties where LGBTQ patients may be disproportionately affected are accepting of LGBTQ individuals and acknowledge the existence of unique needs for this population, yet are largely unaware of specific health behaviors and risk factors of, and best practices regarding, this population. This study also highlights the potential need for improved LGBTQ-related content in health professional school curricula, as well as for continuing education and training for providers that addresses the care of LGBTQ patient populations.Citation Format: Christina Tamargo, J...

Digesting the Contents: an Analysis of Online Colorectal Cancer Education Websites
This study aims to provide the most in-depth and comprehensive examination of online colorectal resources to date. An internet search using the terms “colorectal cancer,” “colon cancer,” and “rectal cancer” were performed, with meta-search engines “Dogpile,” “Yippy,” and “Google.” A total of 741, 759, and 703 websites were returned by the search engines respectively. A list of the “top 100 websites” was compiled by pla cing the sites in average rank order. The websites were evaluated using a validated structured rating tool. Inter-rater reliability was evaluated using kappa statistics, and the r...

Polypectomy techniques, endoscopist characteristics, and serious gastrointestinal adverse events
ConclusionsEndoscopists regardless of specialty and experience can safely use cold biopsy forceps. For hot biopsy and snare polypectomy, low volume, but not specialty, contributed to increased odds of adverse events. For complex colonoscopy, primary care specialty, but not low volume, added to the odds of adverse events. Comparable outcomes were reported for surgeons and gastroenterologists. Cross‐training and continuing medical education of primary care endoscopists in high‐volume endoscopy settings are recommended for complex colonoscopy procedures. J. Surg. Advancing towards Better Cooperation for Better Sarcoma Prognoses
Multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) are necessary to deliver the best sarcoma care. Planning the optimal therapeutic strategy per patient requires input and expertise from several disciplines. Case/cohort studies have reported improved patient outcomes associated with treatment by MDTs and/or treatment in sarcoma centres. Many countries have established national networks of sarcoma reference centres and most have developed evidence-based clinical practice guidelines agreed using multidisciplinary expertise. In many countries, sarcoma networks are organised as cooperative groups. These groups are committed to delivering continui...

Continuing Professional Development Needs Amongst University of Toronto ’s Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty
AbstractContinuing professional development (CPD) and lifelong learning are core tenets of most healthcare disciplines. Where undergraduate coursework lays the foundation for entry into practice, CPD courses and offerings are designed to aid clinicians in maintaining these competencies. CPD offerings need to be frequently revised and updated to ensure their continued utility. The purpose of this qualitative study was to better understand the CPD needs of members of the University of Toronto ’s Department of Radiation Oncology (UTDRO) and determine how these needs could be generalized to other CPD programs. Given that UTD...

Continuing EGFR-TKI treatment in combination with super-selective arterial infusion chemotherapy beyond disease progression for patients with advanced EGFR-mutant non-small cell lung cancer
This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of continuing EGFR-TKI therapy concurrently with arterial infusion chemotherapy in 6 patients (median age 55.9 years) with advanced EGFR-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who had a locally progressive, centrally located lung lesion after EGFR-TKI therapy. The patients received a super-selective arterial infusion of docetaxel (75 mg/m2) every 28 days concurrently with EGFR-TKI therapy until further progressive disease (PD) or unacceptable adverse effects (AEs) occurred. Treatment outcomes were assessed via progression-free survival (PFS) times (PFS-1: time to PD after ...

Identifying Primary Care Physicians Continuing Education Needs by Examining Clinical Practices, Attitudes, and Barriers to Screening Across Multiple Cancers
AbstractPopulation-based cancer screening for cervical, breast, and colorectal cancers improves patient outcomes, yet screening rates remain low for some cancers. Despite studies investigating physician perceptions and practices for screening, many have focused on individual cancers and lack primary care physicians ’ (PCPs) realities around screening for multiple cancers. We surveyed 887 PCPs in British Columbia (BC) to examine practices, beliefs, barriers, and learning needs towards cancer screening across breast, cervical, colorectal, prostate, as well as hereditary predisposition to cancer. Survey results identified d...
