Non-Calcified Coronary Artery Plaque on Coronary Computed Tomography Angiogram: Prevalence and Significance
CONCLUSIONS: NCP is the initial precursor of calcified plaque and serves as a prominent marker of early coronary atherosclerosis. By detecting NCP during early stages, several measures can be implemented which can alter the evolutionary course of the underlying disease. This can potentially lead to a lower incidence of cardiovascular events.PMID:37736993 | DOI:10.3390/tomography9050140

Female-specific risk factors of parity and menopause age and risk of carotid plaque: the multi-ethnic study of atherosclerosis
CONCLUSION: In a multiethnic cohort, grand multiparity was independently associated with carotid plaque presence and progression. Early menopause, a known risk factor for CVD, was not captured by carotid plaque in this study. These findings may have implications for refining CVD risk assessment in women.PMID:37736349 | PMC:PMC10509453

Acute water intoxication in hysteroscopic myomectomy: a rare case report
AbstractWater intoxication is rarely seen in forensic practice and is typically associated with excessive water consumption, amphetamine intake, and child abuse. Iatrogenic water intoxication is rare but usually related to medical disputes. Here, we report a 44-year-old female was admitted to the hospital due to a 3-month history of excessive menstrual bleeding. B-ultrasound revealed multiple substantial intrauterine masses, leading to a diagnosis of multiple uterine fibroids. After admission, she underwent submucous myomectomy, endometrial resection, and transcervical resection of endometrial polyps. During the procedure,...

Remote ultrasound diagnostics disrupting traditional military frontline healthcare delivery
This report discusses the first use of a consultant radiologist guiding a clinician, untrained in ultrasound, to perform an ultrasound scan via a live tele-guidance feed in the deployed environment using the Butterfly iQ+ tele-guidance system. Distance scanning provided a diagnostic quality report when compared with locally performed imaging to improve patient care and maintain operational output. This example demonstrates feasibility of remote point-of-care imaging systems in provision of location-agnostic high-quality diagnostic capability. Future opportunities to develop care pathways using bedside tele-diagnostics will...

Classification of breast lesions in ultrasound images using deep convolutional neural networks: transfer learning versus automatic architecture design
AbstractDeep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) have demonstrated promising performance in classifying breast lesions in 2D ultrasound (US) images. Exiting approaches typically use pre-trained models based on architectures designed for natural images with transfer learning. Fewer attempts have been made to design customized architectures specifically for this purpose. This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation on transfer learning based solutions and automatically designed networks, analyzing the accuracy and robustness of different recognition models in three folds. First, we develop six different DCNN models (BNet...

"Grey areas" in large rectal neuroendocrine tumors: when endoscopic ultrasound becomes the silver lining
Rev Esp Enferm Dig. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.17235/reed.2023.9893/2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 50-years old male with irrelevant medical history underwent colonoscopy for colorectal cancer screening. On the distal rectum, a subpedunculated (Paris classification Isp) lesion with 15mm was detected. This lesion presented yellowish mucosa and had irregular surfaces, suggesting a subepithelial lesion. Bite-on-bite biopsy confirmed a well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor (r-NET), positive for synaptophysin, with a low-proliferative index. As r-NETs with 10-20mm fall on a grey area between endoscopic or surgical treatment...

Value of ultrasound in assessing response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer
CONCLUSION: This study has shown significance in reducing LD measurements on ultrasound as a predictor of PCR and RCB class. This adds weight to the current practice of using ultrasound at the start, mid and end of chemotherapy cycles to monitor NACT responses.PMID:37734976 | DOI:10.1016/j.crad.2023.07.010

Boiling histotripsy induces dendritic cell activation and acquisition of antigen in tumor draining lymph nodes
bioRxiv. 2023 Sep 6:2023.09.02.552844. doi: 10.1101/2023.09.02.552844. Preprint.ABSTRACTBoiling histotripsy (BH), a mechanical focused ultrasound ablation strategy, can elicit intriguing signatures of anti-tumor immunity. However, the influence of BH on dendritic cell function is unknown, compromising our ability to optimally combine BH with immunotherapies to control metastatic disease. Here, by applying BH to B16F10 melanoma expressing a ZsGreen antigen in a monotherapy protocol that elicits abscopal tumor control, we observed a marked increase in antigen acquisition by multiple phagocytic immune cells, including convent...

Ultrasound-guided ablation techniques for thyroid lesions
Laryngorhinootologie. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.1055/a-2144-4132. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUltrasound-guided ablation techniques have been increasingly introduced into routine treatment of thyroid lesions as a complement to existing surgical therapies and radioiodine treatment. In cystic or predominantly cystic lesions instillation therapy (ethanol/polidocanol ablation) has yielded good results. Novel thermal ablation techniques, including radiofrequency ablation (RFA), microwave ablation (MWA), laser ablation (LA) and high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), induce irreversible cellular effects by locally applying temper...
