Association between dialysis effluent leukocyte count after initial antibiotic treatment and outcomes of patients with peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis: a retrospective study
CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with PDAP, increased PDELC on day 5 was associated with a greater risk of 60-day mortality, half-year mortality, and treatment failure.PMID:37737145 | DOI:10.1080/0886022X.2023.2258990

The effect of exercise on vascular health in chronic kidney disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Am J Physiol Renal Physiol. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.1152/ajprenal.00152.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPatients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease. This increased risk cannot be fully explained by traditional risk factors such as hypertension. Endothelial dysfunction and arterial stiffness have been suggested as factors which explain some of the increased risk, and are independently associated with important cardiovascular outcomes in CKD patients. Studies in other disease populations have shown positive effects of exercise on vascular dysfunction. The aim of this review was...

Retinopathy is associated with impaired cognition in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis
Conclusions: Retinopathy, a condition common in patients undergoing PD, was associated with global cognitive impairment. These findings highlight retinopathy, can serve as a valuable primary screening tool for assessing the risk of cognitive decline.PMID:37732397 | DOI:10.1080/0886022X.2023.2258989

Comparison of young and old patients on peritoneal dialysis: A retrospective observational study
CONCLUSION: Peritonitis and technical survival evaluations of elderly PD patients, other than mortality, were lower than younger PD patients. However, the need for help is one of the biggest obstacles to this method for the elderly. We believe that incentives in this regard will increase the number of elderly PD patients.PMID:37734902 | DOI:10.1111/sdi.13180

Health inequities in dialysis care: A scoping review
CONCLUSIONS: Our scoping review examined current literature on health inequities pertaining to dialysis and found gaps concerning LGBTQ+ and patients with lower levels of education. To help fill these gaps, and possibly alleviate additional burden to these patients, we recommend cultural competency training for providers and dialysis center staff as well as community-based educational programs to improve dialysis patients' health literacy.PMID:37734842 | DOI:10.1111/sdi.13176

Idecabtagene vicleucel chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy for relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma with renal impairment
Haematologica. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.3324/haematol.2023.283940. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe evaluated patients with relapsed multiple myeloma with renal impairment (RI treated with standard of care ide-cel, as outcomes with CAR-T therapy are unknown in this population. RI was defined as creatinine clearance (CrCl < 50 ml/min. CrCl of < 30 ml/min or dialysis dependence were defined as severe RI. The study cohort included 214 patients, 28 (13% patients with RI, including 11 patients severe RI (dialysis, n=1. Patients with RI were older, more likely to be female and had higher likelihood of having R-ISS stage 3 dise...

Relationship Between Standardized Measures of Chronic Kidney Disease-associated Pruritus Intensity and Health-related Quality of Life Measured with the EQ-5D Questionnaire: A Mapping Study
Acta Derm Venereol. 2023 Sep 20;103:adv11604. doi: 10.2340/actadv.v103.11604.ABSTRACTChronic kidney disease-associated pruritus is linked with decreased health-related quality of life assessed using disease-specific instruments. The extent to which worsening pruritus reduces generic quality of life assessed using the EQ-5D instrument is unknown. Prevalent kidney failure patients receiving in-centre haemodialysis from 5 centres completed the EQ-5D-5L quality of life measure, worst Itching Intensity Numerical Rating Scale and 5-D itch pruritus instruments. Latent class models were used to identify clusters of patients with s...

Cost-effectiveness of terlipressin for hepatorenal syndrome: The United States hospital perspective
CONCLUSIONS: HRS patients treated with terlipressin experienced better clinical outcomes and a lower cost per treatment response vs alternative treatments. ICU days and pharmacy costs were key cost drivers distinguishing the treatment groups. These outcomes suggest that terlipressin is cost-effective on the basis of total cost per response achieved.PMID:37729445 | DOI:10.1080/13696998.2023.2260693

Impact of Electrocardiographic Parameters on Sudden Death in Patients Receiving Maintenance Hemodialysis: Ten-Year Outcomes of the Q-Cohort Study
CONCLUSIONS: Higher heart rate, QT prolongation, and left ventricular hypertrophy on ECG have been determined to be associated with an increased risk of sudden death. Therefore, regular ECG recording could enable medical practitioners to identify hemodialysis patients who require intervention to prevent lethal arrhythmia.PMID:37730375 | DOI:10.5551/jat.64255
