Do advanced glycation end-products cause food allergy?
Purpose of review: The aim of this study was to appraise the evidence relating to dietary advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), their influence on innate and adaptive immune responses and their possible role in the increasing rate of food allergy that is being observed globally. Recent findings: The western pattern of diet is high in both AGEs and their substrates and this has been increasing in the last 30 years. AGEs mimic alarmins such as S100 proteins and the high molecular group box 1 (HMBG1), binding to the Receptor for Advanced Glycation End Products (RAGE), which in turn influences innate and adaptive immune res...

Possible Link Between High Vitamin D Levels In Expectant Mothers And Increased Infant Allergy Risks
Pregnant women should avoid taking vitamin D supplements. Supplementation appears to raise the risk of children developing a food allergy after birth. This was the conclusion drawn from a new survey carried out by the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research and the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg in Germany which was published in the medical journal Allergy. Vitamin D has always had a good reputation: it strengthens bones, protects against infections particularly during the cold winter months and aids the nervous and muscular systems...

Beneficial role for supplemental vitamin D3 treatment in chronic urticaria: a randomized study.
CONCLUSION: Add-on therapy with high-dose vitamin D3 (4,000 IU/d) could be considered a safe and potentially beneficial immunomodulator in patients with chronic urticaria. PMID: 24507460 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Asthma, allergy, and responses to methyl donor supplements and nutrients
After a brief period of stabilization, recent data have shown that the prevalence of asthma and allergic diseases continues to increase. Atopic diseases are major public health problems resulting in significant disability and resource use globally. Although environmental factors influence the development of atopic disease, dietary changes might partially explain the high burden of atopic disease. Potential mechanisms through which diet is suspected to effect asthma and allergy susceptibility are through epigenetic changes, including DNA methylation. Dietary methyl donors are important in the one-carbon metabolic pathway th...

The effects of vitamin D supplementation on airway functions in mild to moderate persistent asthma.
CONCLUSION: Vitamin D supplementation associated with asthma controllers could significantly improve FEV1 in mild to moderate persistent asthma after 24 weeks. TRIAL REGISTRATION: irct.ir Identifier: IRCT201302079608N1. PMID: 25091714 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Dietary elimination of children with food protein induced gastrointestinal allergy – micronutrient adequacy with and without a hypoallergenic formula?
Conclusion This study points towards the important micronutrient contribution of a HF in children with FPIGA. Children, who are not on a HF and without a VMS, are at increased risk of low intakes in particular vitamin D and zinc. Further studies need to be performed, to assess whether dietary intake translates into actual biological deficiencies.

Plasma vitamin D levels of patients with allergic rhino-conjunctivitis with positive skin prick test.
CONCLUSIONS: We found lower plasma vitamin D levels in patients with ARC when compared with the control group. PMID: 25785742 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Serum vitamin D levels in a cohort of adult and pediatric patients with eosinophilic esophagitis.
CONCLUSION: In these patients with EoE, vitamin D levels were low overall (median <30 ng/mL). The only marker of sensitization associated with insufficient vitamin D in these patients with EoE was a positive skin prick test reaction to peanut. PMID: 26004426 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Urticaria With a Focus on Chronic Urticaria in Children.
CONCLUSIONS: A total of 1.8% of children were found to have chronic urticaria. Living in a new residence and belonging to a family with a high income increased the risk of chronic continuous urticaria. PMID: 28293927 [PubMed]

Vitamin D receptor variants and uncontrolled asthma.
Conclusion. TaqI and ApaI polymorphisms are associated with asthma in Irish children. Further studies are warranted to investigate the importance of decreased IL-10 levels in paediatric asthmatics with specific genotypes. PMID: 29384117 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Intestinal Microbial-Derived Sphingolipids Are Associated with Childhood Food Allergy
Investigation of the early-life intestinal microenvironment may provide insight into food allergy pathophysiology. We performed an untargeted analysis of the infant gut metabolome and bacterial microbiome of childhood food allergy in this ancillary study of the Vitamin D Antenatal Asthma Reduction Trial (VDAART).

A Case of Anaphylaxis to Intramuscular but Not to Oral Application of Thiamine (Vitamin B1).
We report a 78 year-old non-atopic female with polyneuropathy who started to receive monthly intramuscular injections of thiamine hydrochloride. She had an anaphylaxis after the fourth injection. Skin prick test (SPT) with pure commercially available aqueous preparations was positive for thiamine hydrochloride. A titrated, single blinded, placebo-controlled oral provocation test with thiamine hydrochloride was well tolerated. The patient was then diagnosed as compartment allergy with hypersensitivity to parenteral but not to oral thiamine. Because in our patient, oral intake of thiamine has never been reported to lead t...

Age-related differences in asthma outcomes in the United States, 1988-2006.
CONCLUSION: Older adults with asthma have a substantial burden of morbidity and increased mortality. The ethnic differences in asthma mortality and the vitamin D-mortality link merit further investigation. PMID: 23535086 [PubMed - in process]
