Genetic Associations With Diabetic Retinopathy and Coronary Artery Disease in Emirati Patients With Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus
Conclusions: The present study reports associations of different genetic loci with DR and CAD. We report new associations between CAD and PLXDC2, and DR with UBE2D1 using data from T2DM Emirati patients. Introduction Diabetes is among the largest global health emergencies in the twenty-first century, as it creates a major human and financial burden worldwide (1). The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has estimated that 415 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes in 2015, and the number is expected to rise to 642 million by 2040. The financial burden associated with diabetes worldwide has been estimat...

Antioxidant supplementation for lung disease in cystic fibrosis.
CONCLUSIONS: With regards to micronutrients, there does not appear to be a positive treatment effect of antioxidant micronutrients on clinical end-points; however, oral supplementation with glutathione showed some benefit to lung function and nutritional status. Based on the available evidence, inhaled and oral glutathione appear to improve lung function, while oral administration decreases oxidative stress; however, due to the very intensive antibiotic treatment and other concurrent treatments that people with CF take, the beneficial effect of antioxidants remains difficult to assess in those with chronic infection withou...

Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor for neovascular glaucoma.
CONCLUSIONS: Currently available evidence is uncertain regarding the long-term effectiveness of anti-VEGF medications, such as intravitreal ranibizumab or bevacizumab or aflibercept, as an adjunct to conventional treatment in lowering IOP in NVG. More research is needed to investigate the long-term effect of these medications compared with, or in addition to, conventional surgical or medical treatment in lowering IOP in NVG. Preference for Lighting Chromaticity in Migraine With Aura.
CONCLUSIONS: Individuals who experienced MWA selected as comfortable colors that deviated from the lighting typically experienced in everyday life. Possibly, individuals who experience MWA may be more susceptible to photophobia under typical lighting. Visual performance was improved using lenses that provided light of the chosen comfortable color. The spectral power of that choice showed no evident relationship to melanopic energy (energy captured by the intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells). Tamponade in surgery for retinal detachment associated with proliferative vitreoretinopathy.
CONCLUSIONS: There do not appear to be any major differences in outcomes between C3F8 and silicone oil. Silicone oil may be better than SF6 for macular attachment and other short-term outcomes. The choice of a tamponade agent should be individualized for each patient. The use of either C3F8 or standard silicone oil appears reasonable for most patients with RD associated with PVR. Heavy silicone oil, which is not available for routine clinical use in the USA, may not demonstrate evidence of superiority over standard silicone oil. PMID: 32408387 [PubMed - in process]

Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor for macular oedema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion.
CONCLUSIONS: The available RCT evidence suggests that treatment of MO secondary to BRVO with anti-VEGF improves visual and anatomical outcomes at six and 12 months. PMID: 32633861 [PubMed - in process]

Biomarkers for Nonexudative Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Relevance for Clinical Trials: A Systematic Review
ConclusionThis systematic review supports the use of structural and functional biomarkers in early AMD and intermediate AMD, which are more reproducible and less invasive than the other classes of biomarkers described. The use of deep learning and combinational algorithms will gain increasing importance in future clinical trials of nonexudative AMD.

Prevalence of Diabetic Retinopathy among Type Two Diabetic Patients in Arab Countries
ConclusionWe present the first systematic review and meta-analysis of DR among Arab patients with T2D in 10 different Arab countries. Although our search strategy was broad, we were only able to find few reports compared to the scale of the problem in the Arab countries; our meta-analysis revealed that the prevalence is high (22.543 %) with significant variations among different Arab countries, even within the same country.

Ocular adverse events from pharmacological treatment in patients with multiple sclerosis —A systematic review of the literature
ConclusionsOur search revealed different methodological assessments of the topic. However, longitudinal studies regarding ocular TEAEs related to multiple sclerosis therapy are necessary to provide evidence-based recommendations, especially in understudied regions such as Latin America and Africa. Physicians should monitor ocular symptoms in patients being treated for multiple sclerosis and consider an interdisciplinary approach.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO ID CRD42020106886

Role of Optical Coherence Tomography in Identifying Retinal Biomarkers in Frontotemporal Dementia: A Review
We present a narrative review of the current literature focused on optical coherence tomography (OCT) to identify retinal biomarkers of dementia, discuss OCT findings in FTD, and explore the implications of an FTD-specific ocular biomarker for research and patient care. Recent Findings Recent studies suggest that outer retinal thinning detected via OCT may function as a novel ocular biomarker of FTD. The degree and rate of inner retinal thinning may correlate with disease severity and progression. In Alzheimer disease (AD), OCT demonstrates thinning of the inner retina, which may differentiate this condition from FTD. We ...

Vaccine-related retinal artery occlusion in adults: a review of the current literature
First of all, I am pleased to have an opportunity to discuss our recently published review on vaccine-related retinal artery occlusion (RAO) in adults.1 Publication and reporting bias are well known in medical research,2 and time lag bias is unavoidable in major public healthcare event as if COVID-19 vaccination.3 Our review clearly listed out the literature search methods on search engine and database used (MEDLINE and PubMed), keywords and MeSH terms applied (vaccine retinal artery occlusion), as well as the date of the search (10th January 2022).

Imaging-based Assessment of Choriocapillaris: A Comprehensive Review
CONCLUSION: The development of imaging tools such as OCT and OCTA has dramatically improved the assessment of choriocapillaris in health and disease. The choriocapillaris can be delineated from the stromal choroid using the OCT and quantified by manual or automated methods. However, these techniques have inherent limitations due to the lack of an anatomical distinction between the choriocapillaris and the stromal choroid, which can be overcome with the use of predefined segmentation slabs on OCT and OCTA. These segmentation slabs help in standardizing the choriocapillaris imaging and obtain repeatable measurements in vario...

Quantifying the increasing use of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy in ophthalmology
CONCLUSION: Bevacizumab is one of the most far reaching drugs in ophthalmology and even medicine, but it is not yet supported by high quality evidence. The much higher cost of ranibizumab may be responsible for bevacizumab's popularity among eye specialists. Patients should be fully informed about the off-label use of bevacizumab and the associated risks with its use.PMID:22815647 | PMC:PMC3399721
