Bacillus licheniformis inoculation promoted humification process for kitchen waste composting: Organic components transformation and bacterial metabolic mechanism
The objective of this study was to develop potentially efficient solutions to improve the humification of KW composting, accelerate the humus synthesis and produce HS with a high polymerization degree. The impact of Bacillus licheniformis inoculation on the transformation of organic components, humus synthesis, and bacterial metabolic pathways in kitchen waste composting, was investigated. Results revealed that microbial inoculation promoted the degradation of organic constituents, especially readily degradable carbohydrates during the heating phase and lignocellulose fractions during the cooling phase. Inoculation facilit...

Antibacterial activity of a polysaccharide isolated from Artemisia argyi leaf against Staphylococcus aureus and mechanism investigation
In this study, an Artemisia argyi leaf polysaccharide (AALP) fraction was extracted and analyzed. Chemical composition analysis showed that the carbohydrate, uronic acid, protein, and polyphenol content in AALP were 68.3 % ± 4.13 %, 9.4 % ± 0.86 %, 1.79 % ± 0.27 %, and 0.16 % ± 0.035 %, respectively. Chromatographic results suggested that AALP contained rhamnose, arabinose, glucosamine, galactose, glucose, xylose, mannose, galacturonic acid, and glucuronic acid in a molar ratio of 9.26, 1.35, 1.18, 3.04, 48.51, 2.33, 31.26, 3.93, and 9.08; the weight average molecular weight, number average molecular weight, and polydi...

Uncovering the dynamics of cellular responses induced by iron-carbohydrate complexes in human macrophages using quantitative proteomics and phosphoproteomics
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Aug 30;166:115404. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115404. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIron-carbohydrate complexes are widely used to treat iron deficiencies. Macrophages play a crucial role in the uptake and fate of these nanomedicines, however, how complexed iron carbohydrates are taken up and metabolized by macrophages is still not fully understood. Using a (phospho-)proteomics approach, we assessed differences in protein expression and phosphorylation in M2 macrophages triggered by iron sucrose (IS). Our results show that IS alters the expression of multiple receptors, indicative of a complex ent...

Polysaccharide extracted from cultivated Sanghuangporous vaninii spores using three-phase partitioning with enzyme/ultrasound pretreatment: Physicochemical characteristics and its biological activity in vitro
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Aug 30:126622. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126622. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSanghuangporous vaninii, as a valuable dietary supplement and medicinal ingredient, contains abundant bioactive polysaccharides that have health-promoting effects. In the present study, four polysaccharides (SVSPs-C, SVSPs-E, SVSPs-U, and SVSPs-E/U) were extracted for the first time from S. vaninii spores by three-phase partitioning (TPP), enzyme pretreatment before TPP (E-TPP), ultrasonic pretreatment before TPP (U-TPP), and enzyme pretreatment followed by ultrasonic before TPP (E/U-TPP) methods, respectively. Their...

Biomedical applications of electrospun polycaprolactone-based carbohydrate polymers: A review
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Aug 30:126642. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126642. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCarbohydrate used in biomedical applications is influenced by numerous factors. One of the most appealing characteristic of carbohydrates is their ability to reproduce from natural resources which makes them ecologically friendly. Due to their abundance, biocompatibility, and no contamination by residual initiators, the desire for polysaccharides in medical uses is growing. Research on fiber-based materials, with a variety of medical applications including bio-functional scaffolds, continues to yield novel and intrig...

Mechanistic insights into sulfur source-driven physiological responses and metabolic reorganization in the fuel-biodesulfurizing < em > Rhodococcus qingshengii < /em > IGTS8
Appl Environ Microbiol. 2023 Sep 1:e0082623. doi: 10.1128/aem.00826-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTComparative proteomics and untargeted metabolomics were combined to study the physiological and metabolic adaptations of Rhodococcus qingshengii IGTS8 under biodesulfurization conditions. After growth in a chemically defined medium with either dibenzothiophene (DBT) or MgSO4 as the sulfur source, many differentially produced proteins and metabolites associated with several metabolic and physiological processes were detected including the metabolism of carbohydrates, amino acids, lipids, nucleotides, vitamins, protein synth...

Biological function, regulatory mechanism, and clinical application of mannose in cancer
Biochim Biophys Acta Rev Cancer. 2023 Aug 30:188970. doi: 10.1016/j.bbcan.2023.188970. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStudies examining the regulatory roles and clinical applications of monosaccharides other than glucose in cancer have been neglected. Mannose, a common type of monosaccharide found in human body fluids and tissues, primarily functions in protein glycosylation rather than carbohydrate metabolism. Recent research has demonstrated direct anticancer effects of mannose in vitro and in vivo. Simply supplementing cell culture medium or drinking water with mannose achieved these effects. Moreover, mannose enhances t...

Performance responses of lactating Rahmani ewes fed diet supplemented with < em > Enterococcus faecium < /em > NRC-3 or < em > Lactobacillus rhamnosus < /em >
Anim Biotechnol. 2023 Sep 1:1-9. doi: 10.1080/10495398.2023.2252013. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProduction of new types of probiotics for animal nutrition mainly depends on the appropriate bacterial strain and efficient substrate. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of two probiotic strains containing 1.2 × 108 (CFU/g), produced on permeate media on performance responses of Rahmani ewes. Thirty early lactating ewes (about 2-3 years old and weighting on average 43.2 ± 0.3 kg) were randomly divided into three groups of 10 animals each using a completely randomized design. The 1st group was fed the basal d...

Arachidonic acid metabolism CYP450 pathway is deregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma and associated with microvascular invasion
In this study, we investigated the expression of key genes involved in the arachidonic acid metabolism pathway in HCC using a combination of bioinformatics, proteomics and immunohistochemistry analyses. Through a comprehensive analysis of publicly available datasets, clinical HCC tissues, and tissue microarrays, we compared the expression of hepatic arachidonic acid metabolic genes. We observed significant downregulation of cytochrome P450 (CYP450) pathway genes at both the messenger RNA and protein levels in HCC tissues compared to normal liver tissues. Furthermore, we observed a strong correlation between the deregulatio...
