In silico Identification and Mechanism Exploration of Hepatotoxic Ingredients in Traditional Chinese Medicine
Conclusion: Overall, this study provides a high accurate approach to predict HILI and an in silico perspective into understanding the hepatotoxicity mechanism of TCM, which might facilitate the discovery and development of new drugs. Introduction Liver injury induced by drug, novel foods or phytotherapy, also known as hepatotoxicity, is still a major clinical and pharmaceutical concern (Amadi and Orisakwe, 2018; Hammann et al., 2018; Kyawzaw et al., 2018; Real et al., 2018). According to the data from United States National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), hepatotoxicity accounts for...

Safety and efficacy of angiographic occlusion of duodenal varices as an alternative to TIPS: review of 32 cases.
CONCLUSIONS: This work suggests that angiographic-occlusion-withsclerotherapy/ embolotherapy-without-TIPS is relatively effective (~90% hemostasis-rate), and relatively safe (3% major-complication-rate). This therapy may be a useful treatment option for duodenal varices when endoscopic therapy fails and TIPS is relatively contraindicated. PMID: 25864218 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Clinical Value of Oxymatrine in Preventing Lamivudine Induced YMDD Mutation: A Meta-Analysis.
Authors: He M, Wu Y, Wang M, Chen W, Yuan W, Jiang J Abstract Oxymatrine (OMTR) is widely used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) in China. Several reports revealed that combination of OMTR and lamivudine reduced the incidence of tyrosine- (Y-) methionine- (M-) aspartic acid- (D-) aspartic acid (D) (YMDD) mutations in CHB patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical value of oxymatrine in preventing lamivudine induced YMDD mutation using meta-analysis of data from published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and to provide some useful information for clinical treatment and future resear...

Case series of an alternative therapy for generalised lichen planus: Four case studies.
Authors: Nwabudike LC, Miulescu M, Tatu AL Abstract Lichen planus (LP) is an idiopathic, cell-mediated immune disorder, accompanied by itching. Spontaneous remission occurs. Topical and systemic therapies are utilised. Four cases of generalized LP with and without mucosal involvement treated homeopathically are presented. Case 1: A 48-year-old female presented with a 7-month history of generalized itchy rash, which had been diagnosed as LP, treated unsuccessfully with topical steroids and removal of dental fillings. Advance in studies on traditional Chinese medicines to treat infection with the hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus.
Authors: Xia J, Inagaki Y, Song P, Sawakami T, Kokudo N, Hasegawa K, Sakamoto Y, Tang W Abstract Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), as a type of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), is a sophisticated and time-honored form of healthcare in China. Many TCMs are widely used to treat hepatitis B and hepatitis C in countries like China, Japan, and South Korea. Since conventional clinical preparations like interferon-α cause obvious dose-dependent adverse reactions and drug resistance, TCMs and related bioactive compounds have garnered increasing attention from physicians and medical researchers. Thus far, a ...

Chinese Herbal Medicine Ameliorated the Development of Chronic Kidney Disease in Patients with Chronic Hepatitis C: A Retrospective Population-Based Cohort Study.
This study showed that the patients suffering from hepatitis C with CHM treatment more than 90 days as an adjuvant therapy combined with western medical treatment modalities exhibited a decreased risk of developing CKD (hazard ratio (HR) = 0.40, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.21-0.76, p value <0.01). The Kaplan-Meier curve revealed a lower cumulative incidence rate of CKD (p value = 0.004) for the CHM cohort. For further reference, we herein offer the ten most frequently prescribed single herbs and herbal formulas; as such, Salviae miltiorrhizae and Jia-Wei-Xiao-Yao-San were the most commonly prescribed si...

Scientists Say They ’ve Reached ‘Turning Point’ in Cancer Research With Vaccines
SEATTLE — The next big advance in cancer treatment could be a vaccine. After decades of limited success, scientists say research has reached a turning point, with many predicting more vaccines will be out in five years. These aren’t traditional vaccines that prevent disease, but shots to shrink tumors and stop cancer from coming back. Targets for these experimental treatments include breast and lung cancer, with gains reported this year for deadly skin cancer melanoma and pancreatic cancer. “We’re getting something to work. Now we need to get it to work better,” said Dr. James Gulley, who help...
