COVID-19 online medical education and outcomes on Internal Medicine In-Training Examination scores
CONCLUSION: Although COVID-19 presented many challenges to residency programs across the United States, our pilot study demonstrated that virtual medical education did not result in lower IM-ITE scores and may be an innovative solution to bridge the education gap during COVID-19.PMID:37091755 | PMC:PMC10120439 | DOI:10.1080/08998280.2023.2188991

Comprehensive history of 3-year and accelerated US medical school programs: a century in review.
Authors: Schwartz CC, Ajjarapu AS, Stamy CD, Schwinn DA Abstract Within the context of major medical education curricular reform ongoing in the United States, a subset of schools has re-initiated accelerated (3-year) medical education. It would be helpful for education leaders to pause and consider historical reasons such accelerated medical schools were started, and then abandoned, over the last century to proactively address important issues. As no comprehensive historical review of 3-year medical education exists, we examined all articles published on this topic since 1900. In general, US medical educational cur...

Creating Clinician Educators: Evaluation of a One-Month Medical Education Curriculum for Senior Residents
CONCLUSIONS: We describe a one-month medical education curriculum with a strong foundation in learning theory. The curriculum is feasible and presented in sufficient detail to allow reproduction. Our findings suggest that it increases participants' self-perceptions of teaching knowledge, confidence, and skills.PMID:34161826 | DOI:10.1016/j.amjms.2021.06.010

Successfully sustaining sex and gender issues in undergraduate medical education: a case study
AbstractAlthough several projects have addressed the importance of gender health issues in medical education, the sustainability of change efforts in medical education has rarely been addressed. Understanding the possible facilitators or barriers to sustainability may help to develop future interventions that are effective in maintaining gender health issues as a topic in medical curricula. The aim of this study is to provide a longitudinal evaluation of changes regarding gender health issues that occurred in the past decade and the factors that influenced this process. The coursebooks of eight theoretical courses of the N...

Ultrasonography in undergraduate medical education: a comprehensive review and the education program implemented at Jichi Medical University
AbstractThe concept of point-of-care ultrasound has been widely accepted owing to the development of portable ultrasound systems and growing body of evidence concerning its extensive utility. Thus, it is reasonable to suggest that training to use this modality be included in undergraduate medical education. Training in ultrasonography helps medical students learn basic subjects such as anatomy and physiology, improve their physical examination skills, and acquire diagnostic and procedural skills. Technological advances such as simulators, affordable handheld devices, and tele-ultrasound systems can facilitate undergraduate...

Cultural diversity: blind spot in medical curriculum documents, a document analysis
Conclusions: Cultural diversity is an underrepresented topic in the Dutch documents that form the basis for actual medical training, although the documents have been updated recently. Attention to the topic is thus unwarranted. This situation does not fit the demand of a multi-ethnic society for doctors with cultural diversity competences. Multi-ethnic countries should be critical on the content of the bases for their medical educational curricula.

Towards socio‐material approaches in simulation‐based education: lessons from complexity theory
ConclusionsSocio‐material approaches such as complexity theory are spreading through research and practice in many aspects of professional education across disciplines. Here, we argue for the transformative potential of complexity theory in medical education using simulation as our focus. Complexity tools open questions about the socio‐material contradictions inherent in SBE, draw attention to important material dynamics of emergence, and suggest practical educative ways to expand and deepen student learning.

Medical education: hitting the target but missing the point.
Authors: Walsh K Abstract There are dangers that a target-driven culture could be affecting medical education. In continuous professional development, many accreditation authorities require physicians to complete a fixed number of hours of continuous professional development per year or to acquire a certain amount of continuous professional development points per year. However, all these numbers are arbitrary and worse reinforce the message to physicians that it is time spent on learning that is important. In fact far more important than hours spent is the ability to assess learning needs, learn in the light of the...
