Harnessing a  knowledge translation framework to implement an undergraduate medical education intervention: A longitudinal study
DiscussionThrough the process we observed the importance of having a  structuring framework, of working closely and deliberatively with stakeholders and students, of building upon concurrent evaluations in order to adapt iteratively the EEI to the local context and, while taking students’ needs into consideration, of upholding the EEI’s core educational principl es. Medical students ’ career decision-making stress during clinical clerkships
This study explores content, process, and context factors that may affect career decision-making stress.MethodsUsing cross-sectional survey data from medical master students (n = 507), we assessed content (future work self), process (choice irreversibility, time pressure, career decision-making self-efficacy), and context (supervisory support, medical school support, study load, competition) factors and their relationships with career decision-making stress. The hypot hesized relationships were tested with structural equation modelling.ResultsA  clearer future work self and higher career decision self-efficacy were as...

This study aimed to determine if and how the SIP ma y provide insight into intergroup relations as experienced by internal medicine (IM) trainees in Scotland.MethodsInterprofessional communication workshops hosted as part of an IM boot camp between August 2020 and March 2021 were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. The effectiveness of video animations in the education of healthcare practitioners and student practitioners: a  systematic review of trials
DiscussionOverall the evidence base is small with mostly ‘high’ risk of bias. Video animations show promise in practitioner education, particularly for effects on knowledge, but bigger, better research is needed. (Source: Perspectives on Medical Education)

Using entrustable professional activities to better prepare students for their postgraduate medical training: A  medical student’s perspective
AbstractThe problemMedical students graduate underprepared for postgraduate medical training despite years of classroom and clinical training. In this article, a  medical student shares her personal perspectives on three factors contributing to this problem in undergraduate medical education: students’ peripheral roles in the clinical environment impede learning, students receive inadequate feedback, and assessments do not measure desired learning outcome s.A solutionThe authors describe how using entrustable professional activities (EPAs) could address these issues and promote students ’ clinical engagement by clarif...

“Walking on eggshells”: experiences of underrepresented women in medical training
DiscussionEquity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives in medical education risk being of little value without a  comprehensive and intersectional understanding of the visible and invisible identities of underrepresented trainees. UWiM trainees’ accounts suggest that they experience significant identity dissonance that may result in unintended consequences if left unaddressed. Our study generated the critic al awareness required for medical educators and institutions to examine their biases and meet their obligation of creating a safer and more equitable environment for UWiM trainees. Blind spots in medical education: how can we envision new possibilities?
AbstractAs human beings, we all have blind spots. Most obvious are our visual blind spots, such as where the optic nerve meets the retina and our inability to see behind us. It can be more difficult to acknowledge our other types of blind spots, like unexamined beliefs, assumptions, or biases. While each individual has blind spots, groups can share blind spots that limit change and innovation or even systematically disadvantage certain other groups. In this article, we provide a  definition of blind spots in medical education, and offer examples, including unfamiliarity with the evidence and theory informing medical educa...

Design guidelines for assessing students ’ interprofessional competencies in healthcare education: a consensus study
This study aims to provide guidelines for the assessment of IP competencies in healthcare education.MethodsA  qualitative consensus study was conducted to establish guidelines for the design of IP assessments using the nominal group technique. First, five expert groups (IP experts, patients, educational scientists, teachers, and students) were asked to discuss design guidelines for IP assessment and reach intra-group consensus. Second, one heterogeneous inter-group meeting was organized to reach a consensus among the expert groups on IP assessment guidelines.ResultsThis study yielded a  comprehensive set of 26 guidelin...

How does portfolio use affect self-regulated learning in clinical workplace learning: What works, for whom, and in what contexts?
DiscussionPortfolio research is falling short both theoretically —in defining and conceptualizing SRL—and methodologically. Nevertheless, this review indicates that portfolio use has potential to support SRL. However, the working mechanisms of portfolio use are easily disrupted. These disruptions seem to relate to tensions between different portfolio purposes , which may undermine learners’ motivation. (Source: Perspectives on Medical Education)

State-of-the-art literature review methodology: A  six-step approach for knowledge synthesis
This article provides a  6-step approach for conducting SotA reviews. SotA reviews offer an interpretive synthesis that describes:This is where we are now. This is how we got here. This is where we could be going. This chronologically rooted narrative synthesis provides a  methodology for reviewing large bodies of literature to explore why and how our current knowledge has developed and to offer new research directions. ‘Things we are expected to just do and deal with’: Using the medical humanities to encourage reflection on vulnerability and nurture clinical skills, collegiality, compassion, and self-care
AbstractTheVulnerability in Medicine(ViM) program was developed to provide protected time and psychologically safe spaces for third-year medical students to consider challenges in the doctor-patient relationship and the clinical workplace. A  suite of discussion-prompts presented in a small-group learning environment provides a springboard for students to reflect on their development as clinicians, understand the personhood of their patients, explore the therapeutic relationship, and consider emotional responses and personal, cultura l, and social assumptions that impact on care. The program supports students to recogni...
