Students ’ perceptions on race in medical education and healthcare
AbstractMajor racial disparities continue to exist in our healthcare education, from the underrepresentation of ethnic minorities when teaching about clinical signs to health management in primary and secondary care. A  multi-centre group of students discuss what needs to change in medical education to cultivate physicians who are better prepared to care for patients of all backgrounds. We argue that the accurate portrayal of race in medical education is a vital step towards educating medical students to conside r alternative explanations to biology when considering health inequities. Becoming clinical supervisors: identity learnings from a  registrar faculty development program
This article shares our experiences and surprises  as we developed, implemented and evaluated a 12-week faculty development program for registrars as clinical supervisors over three cohorts. The program has consistently been rated highly by participants. Yet, following a comprehensive curriculum review, we were surprised that our goal of encoura ging identity development in clinical supervisors seemed to be unmet. Whilst our evaluation suggests that the program made important contributions to the registrars’ knowledge, application and readiness as clinical supervisors, challenges linked to developing a supervisor id...

Why UK medical students change career preferences: an interview study
DiscussionThis was an original, in-depth study on changing career preferences, which is an ill-defined subject within the literature. Analysis revealed preferences changed for a  variety of medical school, personal and specialty reasons, leading to the construction of an updated model of medical career decision-making. Medical career preference remains a dynamic and ever-evolving phenomenon, influenced by an intricate interplay of internal and external factors. An underst anding of this is crucial for future workforce planning. (Source: Perspectives on Medical Education)

The role of training in student examiner rating performance in a  student-led mock OSCE
DiscussionY3 student examiners are effective substitutes for Y5 student examiners in a  Y2 mock OSCE. Our findings suggest that examiner training may further improve marking behaviour especially for PE stations. Further studies with larger sample sizes are required to further evaluate the effects of dedicated examiner training. (Source: Perspectives on Medical Education)

Working beyond disciplines in teacher teams: teachers ’ revelations on enablers and inhibitors

Diabetes SPECIAL (Students Providing Education on Chronic Illness and Lifestyle): a  novel preclinical medical student elective
AbstractBackgroundTraditional medical student curricula limit substantial clinical experiences until the third and fourth years of medical school. This delay in valuable experiences hinders the ability of some medical students to choose a  specialty to pursue, delays the formation of meaningful longitudinal mentorship relationships, and limits the development of important clinical acumen. Furthermore, the use of medical students in preclinical years may help to improve patient care and outcomes.ApproachThe novel preclinical Diabetes SPECIAL (Students Providing Education on Chronic Illness and Lifestyle) elective was desig...

Varying perceptions of the role of “nurse as teacher” for medical trainees: A qualitative study
DiscussionNurses are instrumental in the education of medical trainees; however, divergence was noted in how this role is enacted in practice. Given the valuable teaching resource BU nurses present, more emphasis should be placed on interprofessional co-learning and the actualization of this role within the informal curriculum. “It is you, me on the team together, and my child”: Attending, resident, and patient family perspectives on patient ownership
DiscussionOur theory of patient ownership portrays the patient/family as an active participant in the patient –physician relationship, rather than a passive recipient of care. While specific expectations and tasks will vary based on the practice setting, our findings reframe the way in which patient ownership can be viewed and studied in the future by attending to a diversity of perspectives.
