From struggle to opportunity: Reimagining medical education in a  pandemic era
AbstractThe COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the international medical education community in unprecedented ways. The restrictions imposed to control the spread of the virus have upended our routines and forced us to reimagine our work structures, educational programming and delivery of patient care in ways that will likely continue to change how we live and work for the foreseeable future. Yet, despite these interruptions, the pandemic has additionally sparked a  transformative impulse in some to actively engage in critical introspection around the future of their work, compelling us to consider what changes could (and pe...

Advancing the assessment of clinical reasoning across the health professions: Definitional and methodologic recommendations
AbstractThe importance of clinical reasoning in patient care is well-recognized across all health professions. Validity evidence supporting high quality clinical reasoning assessment is essential to ensure health professional schools are graduating learners competent in this domain. However, through the course of a  large scoping review, we encountered inconsistent terminology for clinical reasoning and inconsistent reporting of methodology, reflecting a somewhat fractured body of literature on clinical reasoning assessment. These inconsistencies impeded our ability to synthesize across studies and appropria tely compare...

A  method for the madness: An international survey of health professions education authors’ journal choice
We describe their experience and use principle component and regression analyses to identify factors associated with successful acceptance.ResultsIn total, 863 responses were received (24.7% response rate), 691 of which were included in our analyses. Two thirds of respondents had their manuscripts accepted at their first-choice journal with revisions required in 98% of cases. We identified six priority factors when choosing journals. In descending order of importance, they were: fit, impact, editorial reputation, speed of dissemination, breadth of dissemination, and guidance from others. Authors who prioritised fit higher ...

The do ’s, don’ts and don’t knows of redressing differential attainment related to race/ethnicity in medical schools
ConclusionsDifferential attainment related to ethnicity/race is a  complex, systemic problem reflective of unequal norms and practices within broader society and evident throughout assessment practices, the learning environment and student experiences at medical school. Currently, the strongest empirical evidence is around assessment processes themselves. There i s emerging evidence of minoritized students facing discrimination and having different learning experiences in medical school, but more studies are needed. There is a pressing need for research on how to effectively redress systemic issues within our medical sch...

Bibliometrics: Methods for studying academic publishing
AbstractBibliometrics is the study of academic publishing that uses statistics to describe publishing trends and to highlight relationships between published works. Likened to epidemiology, researchers seek to answer questions about a  field based on data about publications (e.g., authors, topics, funding) in the same way that an epidemiologist queries patient data to understand the health of a population. In this Eye Opener, the authors introduce bibliometrics and define its key terminology and concepts, including relational a nd evaluative bibliometrics. Readers are introduced to common bibliometric methods and their r...
