ALCAM Mediates DC Migration Through Afferent Lymphatics and Promotes Allospecific Immune Reactions
In conclusion, our findings identify ALCAM as a novel therapeutic target for preventing corneal allograft rejection in high-risk patient populations. Moreover, given the documented contribution of ALCAM to (lymph)angiogenesis, DC migration, and T cell activation, ALCAM blockade might represent a therapeutic strategy for treating other immune-mediated inflammatory conditions, such as solid organ transplant rejection, allergy or autoimmune diseases. Experimental Procedures Cloning, Expression, and Purification of I/F8-Fc and KSF-Fc For cloning of I/F8-Fc and KSF-Fc the respective scFv sequence was amplified from previousl...

Prevalence and determinants of gastroesophageal reflux symptoms in adolescents
ConclusionsThe study showed that GERD symptoms were frequent in junior high school students in Taiwan. Food allergy, asthma and cigarette smoking were independently correlated with the prevalence of GERD symptoms. Psychosocial factors associated with bi‐ethnic family may contribute to its development.

What It's Like to Be Allergic to Water
(Photo-Illustration: Photos: Corbis) By Alexa Tsoulis-Reay In 1963, a 15-year-old girl presented herself to a pair of dermatologists in Pennsylvania complaining that she'd broken out in angry, red lesions after a session of waterskiing. That first mysterious outbreak became a trend: Blotchy, itchy hives would pop up all over her limbs every time she took a bath, went swimming, or perspired heavily. The doctors conducted a series of tests to rule out obvious possible triggers like cold and, using a hand towel soaked in distilled water, identified a condition called aquagenic urticaria: Sufferers are so sensitive to pure w...

Children ’s Environmental Health: Homes of Influence
This article provides a very broad overview of some of the key players that influence the environmental contributions to childhood asthma. It should suggest to the reader that with regard to CEH, the players and issues are many and complex. The need for a comprehensive stakeholder management tool (map) that identifies the stakeholders in CEH, their respective interests and roles, and how they are interconnected, is warranted for effective systems change efforts. It would inform future initiatives borne of the recommendations identified by “A Blueprint for Protecting Children’s Environmental Health: An Urgent Call to Ac...

Current asthma, respiratory symptoms and airway infections among students in relation to the school and home environment in Japan.
CONCLUSION: High relative air humidity, high student density and airborne cat allergens at school may increase the risk of airway infections. Having cats as pets, chemical emissions from paint and new floor materials, odour and dampness can constitute domestic risk factors for respiratory symptoms while having dogs as pets could be protective. LAIR-1 Limits Neutrophilic Airway Inflammation
In conclusion, the immune inhibitory receptor LAIR-1 suppresses neutrophil tissue migration and acts as a negative regulator of neutrophil-driven airway inflammation during lung diseases. Following our recent observations in humans, this study provides crucial in-vivo evidence that LAIR-1 is a promising target for pharmacological intervention in such pathologies. Introduction The lungs are constantly exposed to potential pathogens and other harmful agents. To protect against sudden incursions, neutrophils patrol the lung capillaries. A rapid and robust neutrophil response is crucial to antimicrobial defense (1, 2). N...

Gov’t: Food Allergies May Be Disability Under Law
WASHINGTON (AP) — Allergic to gluten? What about peanuts? Federal disabilities law may be able to help. The Justice Department said in a recent settlement with a Massachusetts college that severe food allergies can be considered a disability under the law. That gives those who suffer from such allergies a new avenue in seeking menus that fit their diet. But some say it goes too far. The decision leaves schools, restaurants and other places that serve food more exposed to legal challenges if they fail to honor requests for accommodations by people with food allergies. Colleges and universities are especially vulnerable be...

Analysis of the association between air pollution and allergic diseases exposure from nearby sources of ambient air pollution within elementary school zones in four Korean cities.
In this study, seven elementary schools were selected and they were classified into three categories. The selection included one school with no traffic-related or other pollutants, three with traffic-related pollutants, and three with traffic-related and other pollutants from industrial and filling station sources. The ISAAC questionnaire survey was given to all of the students except to those in the 1st grade who were presumed to be less likely to be exposed to the school environment than the remainder of the students attending those seven schools. The assessment of allergic disease was conducted on a total of 4,545 stude...
