A New Spectre is Haunting Europe
Roberto Savio is founder of IPS Inter Press Service and President EmeritusBy Roberto SavioROME, Jan 17 2019 (IPS)After Teresa May’s defeat in the British parliament it is clear that a new spectre is haunting Europe. It is no longer the spectre of communism, which opens Marx’s Manifesto of 1848; it is the spectre of the failure of neoliberal globalisation, which reigned uncontested following the fall of the Berlin Wall, until the financial crisis of 2009. Roberto SavioIn 2008, governments spent the astounding amount of 62 trillion dollars to save the financial system, and close to that amount in 2009 (see Britannica Boo...

Adult gonococcal conjunctivitis: Prevalence, clinical features and complications
Conclusion. AGC is a rare disease which is difficult to diagnose as it requires a high index of suspicion to prevent corneal perforation but in an important number of cases it may mimic orbital cellulitis. It is crucial that treatment starts as soon as possible to avoid serious corneal damage. Patients should promptly receive complete and correct treatment when admitted to the emergency room since an elevated number of patients do not attend their medical follow-up visit. Azithromycin or aminoglycoside eye drops are probably the best option to complete the treatment, due to high quinolone resistance.PMID:34494952 | DOI:10.1099/jmm.0.001416

Radiation Oncology Teaching Programmes as Part of the Undergraduate Degree in Medicine in Spanish Universities: the Need for an Update of the Contents and Structure

About 40  % of the population who will suffer cancer will be cured by RT alone or other related treatment modalities. Therefore, cancer education and RT teaching needs to have an in depth impact in the undergraduate medicine programmes. This education component is highly variable, not only among countries b ut also within each country, in terms of content (theory and practical training), number of credi...

Exploring the Factors that Influence Ethical Spanish Use among Medical Students and Solutions for Improvement
Teach Learn Med. 2021 Jul 27:1-8. doi: 10.1080/10401334.2021.1949996. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere is a need for greater access to Spanish language services in United States healthcare. One approach to increasing language concordant care is the use of second language skills by healthcare staff. The desire to use second language skills may have unintended consequences when individuals step beyond their language abilities and can cause more harm than do good for limited-English proficiency patients. Medical students are in a unique position that places them at increased risk for inappropriately using second language s...
