‘Mind-boggling’ sea creature spotted off Japan has finally been identified
When Ryo Minemizu, a professional underwater photographer, posted photos of an elegant ladybug-size flittering creature off Okinawa, Japan, in 2018, biologists were baffled . It wasn’t a worm, a mollusk, or a crustacean. What was it? No one knew. One of those intrigued was Igor Adameyko, a developmental neurobiologist at the Medical University of Vienna. (A fellow enthusiast of marine biology, he spotted the pictures on Instagram, where he has his own account dedicated to marine zooplankton.) Adameyko asked Minemizu whether he had taken a specimen, and, if so, whether he might share it. Not long af...

A Survey of the Status of Methadone Switching in Japan Using a Hospital-Based Administrative Claims Database
In conclusion, more than 30% of the patients underwent high-dose methadone switching and required long completion periods, suggesting that methadone switching remains challenging in Japan. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.PMID:37737471 | DOI:10.1002/jcph.2351

Internet search analysis on the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis: What do people ask and read online?
ConclusionsThe questions were most frequently related to the timeline of treatment and clinical course. Physicians should provide such information to patients with RA in the counseling and education materials.

A randomized trial to evaluate the preventive effect of lafutidine on chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy in patients treated with carboplatin and paclitaxel for lung cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Although the preventive effect of lafutidine on CIPN could not be demonstrated statistically, lafutidine FACT/GOG-Ntx scores showed a trend toward decreased neurotoxicity as chemotherapy proceeded. More reliable studies using lafutidine on the prevention of CIPN should be conducted.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Japan Registry of Clinical Trials identifier: jRCTs021200031.PMID:37731302 | DOI:10.21037/apm-23-90

Anterior Malreduction is Associated With Lag Screw Cutout After Internal Fixation of Intertrochanteric Fractures
CONCLUSION: In patients older than 65 years with intertrochanteric fractures, anterior malreduction on a lateral oblique view was associated with much greater odds of postoperative cutout than anatomic reduction or posterior malreduction. Because anterior malreduction is within the surgeon's control, our findings may help surgeons focus on intraoperative reduction on an oblique lateral view to prevent cutouts. Although this factor is a reliable indicator, the results should be applied to cephalomedullary nails, because there was only one patient with cutout among those with sliding hip screws. Because this study was conduc...

Factors associated with sarcopenia in Japanese patients with rheumatoid arthritis: results from the IORRA cohort study
Clin Rheumatol. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.1007/s10067-023-06779-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo investigate the prevalence of and factors associated with sarcopenia in Japanese patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We analyzed a cross-section of patients with RA participating in the Institute of Rheumatology Rheumatoid Arthritis cohort survey in 2021. Participants completed self-administered questionnaires, including a 5-item sarcopenia screening index (SARC-F). Patients with a SARC-F score of 4 or higher were categorized as having sarcopenia. Among 2416 Japanese patients with RA (2113 women and 303 men; mean age 63.9 ye...

Evolution of horn length and lifting strength in the Japanese rhinoceros beetle Trypoxylus dichotomus
We describe phylogeographic relationships among populations of a rhinoceros beetle and show that the "pitchfork" shaped head horn likely increased in length independently in the northern and southern radiations of beetles. Both increases in horn length were associated with dramatic reductions to horn lifting strength-compelling evidence for the paradox of the weakening combatant-and these initial reductions to horn strength were later ameliorated in some populations through reductions to horn length or through increases in head height (the input arm for the horn lever system). Our results reveal an exciting geographic mosa...

Takotsubo syndrome: From a reversible to a chronic condition in search for the Ariadne's ball of string
Takotsubo syndrome (TTS), originally named because of the shape that the left ventricle takes during the acute phase resembling a Japanese octopus trap, has undergone during the last 20  years a significant revaluation from being considered a form of cardiomyopathy to reversable acute heart failure syndrome [1,2].

A look at radiation detectors and their applications in medical imaging
AbstractThe effectiveness and precision of disease diagnosis and treatment have increased, thanks to developments in clinical imaging over the past few decades. Science is developing and progressing steadily in imaging modalities, and effective outcomes are starting to show up as a result of the shorter scanning periods needed as well as the higher-resolution images generated. The choice of one clinical device over another is influenced by technical disparities among the equipment, such as detection medium, shorter scan time, patient comfort, cost-effectiveness, accessibility, greater sensitivity and specificity, and spati...
