Development and piloting of a blended learning training programme for physicians and medical students to enhance their competences in evidence-based decision-making.
CONCLUSION: The training programme is feasible and was well accepted by the participants. It should be established as a continuing medical education opportunity for practitioners. Evaluation in a randomised controlled trial is recommended. Furthermore, the training can easily be adapted for interprofessional training. A concept for long-term implementation is needed. Responsibilities and concepts for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in Germany : A  plea for a reorientation.
DISCUSSION: The dissociation between under- and postgraduate education has historical reasons. Over a longer period of time the German Federal States reduced their responsibility for postgraduate education in favor of medical associations. The authors propose steps towards a better integration of both sequences, towards seeing the educational process as a continuum. In such a concept, medical associations would have a greater influence on undergraduate education and - vice versa - medical faculties on the postgraduate phase. The "Allgemeinarztbarometer A" - an instrument to assess primary care competencies during medical education and training.
CONCLUSIONS: The ABA (6-item version) seems to be a suitable tool for the external assessment of General Practice competencies in the context of medical education. Further studies are needed to evaluate both the completeness of the assessment and the external assessability of certain items in the context of medical education. Starting points for resilience promotion in medical education: What keeps future doctors healthy?
Abstract A trend towards reduced resilience to stress and impaired psychosocial well-being begins early on in medical education. Our own results confirm the early deterioration of the psychosocial health of medical students observed internationally. Students who simultaneously demonstrate high levels of perfectionism, an insufficient ability to distance themselves from work, as well as a lack of regular physical activity appear to form a special risk group. Therefore, it seems rational to implement interventions that counteract this development by enhancing individual resources and preventing harmful curriculum-...

Predictive power of high school educational attainment and the medical aptitude test for performance during the Bachelor program in human medicine at the University of Bern: a cohort study.
CONCLUSIONS: Students’ Matura grades predicted their subsequent performance in undergraduate medical education in the bachelor’s program of the University of Bern. In contrast, EMS scores do not explain any additional variance in students’ performance throughout the entire bachelor’s program. These findings suggest a need for rethinking the admission process. Private medical education in Germany.
This article aims to give an overview of the private medical training opportunities offered in Germany and to show differences compared to state funded German medical schools. The authors discuss the opportunities of private medical training as well as its challenges and risks. Basic principles concerning finances and quality assurance of national and international private medical training are provided. Regardless of their mode of financing, the superior goal of the training, according to the German Medical Licensure Act, should always be to enable young doctors to pursue further professional training, so that they can mai...

Significance of the doctorate in scientific medical education.
Abstract According to European and German law, the medical education of physicians must take place in a scientific degree program at a university or under the supervision of a university. To keep up the ideal of a scientific degree program, various organizations and associations, such as the German Research Foundation, the German Council of Science and Humanities and the German Medical Faculty Association, see the need for an even stronger anchoring of academic learning content in the course of study. Traditionally, a scientific project, which is carried out during the studies, provides the basis for the Doct...

Behaviour-based functional and dysfunctional strategies of medical students to cope with burnout.
CONCLUSIONS: The identified behavioural-based functional coping strategies suggest that social support and active relaxing exercises seem to be very important possibilities for medical students to reduce stress and exhaustion. The use of drugs and alcohol for stress reduction raises concerns. Programs are recommended to improve resilient behaviour and to impart the identified functional coping strategies to medical students. PMID: 30371222 [PubMed - in process]

Patient Motivation to Participate in Medical Education.
CONCLUSION: The motivation of the patients to participate in bedside teaching and a student examination as well as giving consent to the collection of pictures, videos and X-ray images or subsequent contact correlated with patient satisfaction. Socio-demographic factors are less important. Patient motivation to participate in a lecture is lower regardless of patient satisfaction. PMID: 30808049 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Interprofessional approaches in undergraduate medical education.
Abstract Social change and the subsequent increase in the complexity of patient care create new challenges for all health care professionals that can only be met by close collaboration. Good cooperation between professionals from all healthcare backgrounds has proven to be essential and should therefore play a larger role in educational and study contexts. It is for this reason that over the past few years more and more countries are requiring cooperative skills and competencies in formal medical training and consequently implementing this training in their healthcare systems. This is certainly true in countries s...

Implementing choosing wisley in undergraduate medical education.
Abstract The principles of evidence-based medicine and the "choosing wisley" initiatives create a foundation for patient-centred medicine, which can prevent an overuse or undertreatment for patients. In order to achieve nationwide implementation in Germany, it makes sense to anchor the necessary skills, in particular scientific skills, more firmly in medical studies and to test them in the state exams. With the "Masterplan Medizinstudium 2020", undergraduate medical education should focus more on the teaching and learning of skills and abilities, instead of on the strong tradition of imparting facts and knowledge....

Potential of digitalization in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and training in orthopedics and trauma surgery.
Abstract INTRODUCTION: In its digital agenda the German Federal Government pursues the ambitious objective to facilitate digital competence and perform research into digital learning and teaching processes. Considerable investments are to be concentrated into the future viability of education, academic research and digitalization. As far as academic teaching and further education are concerned, not only in the field of orthopedics and trauma surgery, three aspects can be identified: digital organization, digital competence and digital tools. DIGITAL APPLICATIONS: New formats, such as the elective subject digi...
