Lab-confirmed prenatal exposure to Zika is linked to cardiac defects in infants
In this study, researchers performed echocardiograms in infants with laboratory confirmation of in utero exposure to Zika to investigate a potential link between prenatal Zika exposure and congenital heart defects.METHODThe researchers performed cardiac echocardiograms in infants born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from November 2015 to January 2017. All infants were infected with the Zika virus during their mothers ’ pregnancy, as confirmed by laboratory tests.IMPACTWomen infected by Zika during pregnancy were 10 times more likely than the general population to give birth to infants with major cardiac defects. The researche...

Oral Desensitization to Penicillin for the Treatment of Pregnant Women with Syphilis: A Successful Program
We report a successful program of oral desensitization. None of the patients presented adverse reactions or complications, a fact that corroborates the feasibility and safety of the desensitization protocol. Oral administration of penicillin comes at a low cost, and optimizes the use of time and resources.

Intracameral moxifloxacin after cataract surgery: a prospective study
Conclusion: The results suggest moxifloxacin is a safe option for intracameral use after cataract surgery.RESUMO Objetivo: Estudar alguns par âmetros de segurança da moxifloxacino intracameral nas cinco semanas após a cirurgia de catarata.

Tree nut allergens
Publication date: August 2018Source: Molecular Immunology, Volume 100Author(s): Sabine Geiselhart, Karin Hoffmann-Sommergruber, Merima BublinAbstractTree nuts are considered as part of a healthy diet due to their high nutritional quality. However, they are also a potent source of allergenic proteins inducing IgE mediated hypersensitivity often causing serious, life-threatening reactions. The reported prevalence of tree nut allergy is up to 4.9% worldwide. The general term “tree nuts” comprises a number of nuts, seeds, and drupes, derived from trees from different botanical families. For hazelnut and walnut several alle...

Polymorphisms in the DAD1 and OXA1L genes are associated with asthma and atopy in a South American population
This study aimed to evaluate how polymorphisms in DAD1 and OXA1L are associated with asthma and markers of atopy in individuals from the Salvador cohort of the SCAALA (Social Change Asthma and Allergy in Latin America) program. The DNA of 1220 individuals was genotyped using the Illumina 2.5 Human Omni Bead chip. Logistic regression analyses were performed with PLINK 1.9 software to verify the association between DAD1 and OXA1L polymorphisms and asthma and atopic markers, adjusted for sex, age, helminth infections and ancestry markers, using an additive model. The DAD1 and OXA1L genes were associated with some of the evalu...

Human parasitism and toxicosis by Ornithodoros rietcorreai (Acari: Argasidae) in an urban area of Northeastern Brazil
This report describes the first recorded episodes of human parasitism by this argasid tick, reported to the Brazilian Ministry of Health in September 2017. We assessed outdoor environments, roofs, animal nests and chicken coops in five houses located in an urban area of Russas City, Ceará State, Brazil. Our results confirmed the presence of the tick in two of the assessed houses. The collected specimens were molecularly identified as O. rietcorreai. Of the ten individuals living in the investigated properties, three reported being parasitized by ticks. Although O. rietcorreai ticks were recovered from the evaluated houses...

Personal-Level and Group-Level Discrimination and Mental Health: the Role of Skin Color
ConclusionThis study emphasizes the use of both personal- and group-level discrimination measures, as well as skin color, for the evaluation of mental disorders in public health research. Further studies of health consequences of discrimination will require investigation of protective factors for mental disorders in the population suffering discrimination and racism.

HIV-positive infants are at high risk for acquiring congenital cytomegalovirus infection
FINDINGSInfants born to HIV-positive mothers had high rates of congenital cytomegalovirus, or CMV. Infants who also were infected before birth by the virus that causes AIDS were especially prone to CMV infection. The researchers found that 23 percent of the infants who became infected with HIV during the mother ’s pregnancy also were infected with CMV; 18 percent who were infected with HIV either during pregnancy or birth acquired congenital CMV; and 4.9 percent who were exposed to HIV but remained uninfected with that virus also acquired congenital CMV.Overall, HIV-infected infants were four times as likely to have acqui...

FOXP3 genetic variants are associated with asthma severity in Brazilian women.
The aim of this study was to verify the associations between variants in FOXP3, with different asthma phenotypes and the expression of this molecule in CD4+CD25hiFOXP3+ T lymphocytes. DNA was extracted from the peripheral blood of the 1,418 individuals recruited in to ProAR, case-control study in Salvador, Brazil. The SNPs included in FOXP3 (rs2280883, rs2294021, rs3761548, rs2232365) were genotyped using the TaqMan probe. Analyzes for genetic associations were performed by logistic regressions using PLINK 1.9 software for men and women, separately, and adjusted for age and skin color. The expression of FOXP3 in CD4+CD25hi...

Variants in IL17A and IL17F are risk factors to uncontrolled asthma
The aim of this study was to investigate the association between polymorphisms in IL17A and IL17F and asthma control. This work was performed with participants from ProAR case-control study in Salvador, Brazil. Asthma control was defined according to Global Initiative for Asthma. In this work were included 209 subjects with controlled asthma, 522 with poor control of asthma and 225 with uncontrolled asthma. The rs2275913, rs3819024, rs763780 and rs2397084 were genotyped in genomic DNA of these individuals using TaqMan probe- based 5-nuclease assays technology. Logistic regressions were performed using PLINK software 1.9, u...
