Anterior segment optical coherence tomography in pupillary seclusion diagnosis and follow-up
ABSTRACT Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in elderly individuals, as well as a medical and socio-economic challenge. The treatment of dry age-related macular degeneration is based on vitamin supplementation. New treatment studies are focused on preventing the progression of degeneration and repopulating the atrophic macula. Recently, research on the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration experienced a breakthrough with the advent of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors. Trocar-assisted, flanged haptics, sutureless intrascleral fixated intraocular lens implantation combined with Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty
This article reports a combined technique of sutureless intrascleral fixated intraocular lens implantation and Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty in a patient with anterior pseudophakic bullous keratopathy. Two scleral tunnels were created, corneal incisions were made, and a foldable intraocular lens was cut and removed from the anterior chamber. After performing anterior vitrectomy, a 3-piece foldable intraocular lens was implanted into the anterior chamber. One of the intraocular lens haptics was grasped with a forceps and pulled out from the scleral tunnel. Then, the end of the haptic was cauterized. Similar man...

Angioid streaks and optic disc drusen in cherubism: a case report
ABSTRACT A 65-year-old female patient was referred to our hospital for evaluation for cataract surgery. Her past medical history included corrective jaw surgeries for facial deformities that developed during infancy and persisted through early adulthood. A complete ophthalmological examination revealed bilateral angioid streaks, drusen in both optic disc areas, and a subretinal neovascular membrane in the left macula. Genetic analysis revealed a mutation in the SH3BP2 gene compatible with the diagnosis of cherubism. Clinical and laboratory evaluation revealed no additional systemic disorders. Cherubism is a rare disease ch...

Novel low-cost approach to the treatment of ocular surface squamous neoplasia using pattern scanning laser photocoagulation
Conclusion: Short-term results of the laser photocoagulation approach for the treatment of ocular surface squamous neoplasia conjunctival lesions were favorable, with a 74% success rate observed in immunocompetent patients. This novel strategy is a less resource-intensive alternative that could demonstrate its usefulness in settings with shortages in operating rooms and in recurrent cases. Studies with longer follow-ups and larger sample sizes are warranted to confirm our findings and evaluate the effectiveness of laser treatment in association with topical chemotherapy.RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a seguran ça e o efei...

The Canabrava Ring, an open ring-shaped pupil expander for cataract surgery associated with iris colobomata: a case report
In this report, we describe a new pupil expander device that was used to obtain adequate pupil dilation and centering in a patient with an iris coloboma. Specifically, we describe the case of a patient with an iris coloboma; a Malyugin ring was inserted to facilitate dilation during phacoemulsifi cation surgery. One of the scrolls did not engage which resulted in an uneven distribution of forces and an eccentric pupil. A Canabrava Ring was then implanted that promoted effective pupillary dilation and remained stable and effective throughout the surgical procedure.RESUMO Neste relato, descrevemos um novo dispositivo ex...

Solitary circumscribed neuroma of the conjunctiva: Differential diagnosis from neurofibroma is a must?
ABSTRACT A 42-year-old male presented with a 4-week history of a mass in the right inferior palpebral conjunctiva close to the punctum. An excisional biopsy of the lesion and histopathological examination revealed that the mass was composed of Schwann cells with thin conical nuclei, fine chromatin, and unnoticeable nucleoli. Immunohistochemically, the spindle cells were diffusely and strongly positive for S100 protein. Neurofilament immunostaining was also positive, which highlighted axons. In light of these findings, the tumor was diagnosed as solitary circumscribed neuroma. A comprehensive evaluation for multiple endocri...

ABSTRACT The approach to any refractive condition of the eye with regular astigmatism is more complicated than that for myopia or hyperopia alone. It requires familiarity with the complex images collectively identified as Sturm ’ s conoid. Fortunately, only three of those play a critical role in the interpretation of ametropia with astigmatism. This manuscript discusses a prescription strategy for ametropias associated with regular astigmatism evolved from those three key images.RESUMO A abordagem de qualquer condi ção refrativa do olho com astigmatismo regular é mais complicada do que a da miopi...

Morning glory disc anomaly associated with large facial infantile hemangioma as the presenting signs of PHACE syndrome
ABSTRACT Infantile hemangioma, the most common benign tumor in infancy, is usually an isolated condition occurring in many different locations in the body. However, large infantile hemangioma may be associated with other systemic malformations, including central nervous system, cerebrovascular, cardiac, and ophthalmology abnormalities, a condition termed PHACE syndrome. In this paper, we describe a case of PHACE syndrome that was presented with the unique association of a large facial infantile hemangioma and morning glory anomaly.RESUMO O hemangioma infantil é a causa mais comum de tumor benigno na infância e...

Subfoveal perfluorocarbon liquid removal by peeling of internal limiting membrane, without retinotomy
ABSTRACT Perfluorocarbon liquid has been widely used during vitreoretinal operations. Subretinal retention is a rare intraoperative complication, but even small quantities can damage the macular structure and function, and no standard treatment has been established. We encountered a 43-year-old woman who presented a retained subfoveal bubble after a vitreoretinal operation due to primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Herein, we describe the procedure we used to remove the perfluorocarbon liquid without retinotomy using internal limiting membrane peeling.RESUMO O perfluorocarbono l íquido tem sido amplamente dur...

Congenital dacryocystocele diagnosed by antenatal ultrasonography with spontaneous resolution
We report a case of a fetus with bilateral dacryocystocele diagnosed by prenatal ultrasound at the beginning of the third trimester of pregnancy with spontaneous postpartum resorption.RESUMO A dacriocistocele é uma anormalidade facial benigna rara do sistema nasolacrimal, que pode ser detectada na rotina pré-natal durante o terceiro trimestre da gravidez. O ultrassom é o método de escolha, mas a ressonância magnética também pode ser usada em casos específicos. Na maioria das vezes, a dacriocistoc ele é um achado temporário, que pode se resolver espont&aci...
