Genetic conversion of proliferative astroglia into neurons after cerebral ischemia: a new therapeutic tool for the aged brain?
AbstractIschemic stroke represents the 2nd leading cause of death worldwide and the leading cause for long-term disabilities, for which no cure exists. After stroke, neurons are frequently lost in the infarct core. On the other hand, other cells such as astrocytes become reactive and proliferative, disrupting the neurovascular unit in the lesioned area, especially in the aged brain. Therefore, restoring the balance between neurons and nonneuronal cells within the perilesional area is crucial for post stroke recovery. In addition, the aged post stroke brain mounts a fulminant proliferative astroglial response leading to the...

Dysphagia from a  neurogeriatric point of view : Pathogenesis, diagnosis and management.
This article summarizes the pathophysiological aspects as well as the current evidence for diagnosis and treatment of neurogeriatric dysphagia. Due to its high clinical relevance dysphagia should be added to the geriatric syndromes as "impaired swallowing". PMID: 31139962 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Antidepressants for anxiety disorders in late-life: a systematic review
Anxiety disorders are encountered frequently in late life, and contribute to distress, disability, and increased mortality. Late-life GAD has been linked to increased risk of incident stroke [3]. Anxiety is associated with an increased risk for cognitive impairment and dementia in community dwelling older adults independent of psychosocial risk factors [6]. Despite these impairments, late-life anxiety disorders are largely untreated in primary care, with only 36.3% of recurrent cases in a community sample receiving treatment [7].

Management strategies to prevent stroke in elderly with major neurocognitive disorder and psychosis treated with antipsychotic medication
Despite improvements in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease in the elderly population, it remains the largest single cause of disability and the second leading cause of death in the world. Effectively preventing cardiovascular disease may be the best approach for reducing the burden of stroke in elderly patients.Geriatric psychiatrists often face the challenge of managing patients with major neurocognitive disorders (MNCDs) presenting with behavior disturbances and requiring psychopharmacological intervention.

Arterial hypertension in old age with the focus on 80.
Abstract Untreated high blood pressure in old age increases the risk of secondary diseases, especially stroke, coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction and heart failure and should be treated according to the guidelines. For slightly frail people up to the age of 80 years, a systolic blood pressure of 130-139 mm Hg (measured in the doctors surgery) should be the aim. According to the current European guidelines the same values are recommended for those over the age of 80 years but treatment should start at a systolic blood pressure of ≥160 mm Hg. In physically disabled and very frail older people an...

Atrial fibrillation independently linked with depression in community-dwelling older population. Results from the nationwide PolSenior project.
CONCLUSIONS: In community-dwelling geriatric Polish population AF is associated with higher prevalence of depression. This association is independent from the demographic factors, disabilities and comorbidities (including history of stroke). PMID: 30219348 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Characterizing Beliefs about Stroke and Walking for Exercise among Seniors from Four Racial/Ethnic Minority Communities
We described and compared seniors ’ stroke-related health beliefs among four racial/ethnic communities to inform a culturally-tailored stroke prevention walking intervention. Specific attention was paid to how seniors combined pathophysiology-based biomedical beliefs with non-biomedical beliefs. We conducted twelve language-concor dant, structured focus groups with African American, Chinese American, Korean American, and Latino seniors aged 60 years and older with a history of hypertension (n = 132) to assess stroke-related health beliefs. Participants were asked their beliefs about stroke mechanism and prevention st...

Elderly Stroke Rehabilitation: Overcoming the Complications and Its Associated Challenges.
Authors: Lui SK, Nguyen MH Abstract There have been many advances in management of cerebrovascular diseases. However, stroke is still one of the leading causes of disabilities and mortality worldwide with significant socioeconomic burden. This review summarizes the consequences of stroke in the elderly, predictors of stroke rehabilitation outcomes, role of rehabilitation in neuronal recovery, importance of stroke rehabilitation units, and types of rehabilitation resources and services available in Singapore. We also present the challenges faced by the elderly stroke survivors in the local setting and propose strate...

Falls in Mexican older adults aged 60  years and older.
This study included 6247 participants and their spouse or partner aged 60 years and older from the Mexican Health and Aging Study, an ongoing longitudinal study (2001-2012) conducted in Mexico. Measures included socio-demographics, falls, physical activity, comorbid conditions, pain, vertigo, vision and hearing impairments, urinary incontinence, lower extremity functional limitation, activities of daily living (ADLs), cognitive function, and depressive symptoms. RESULTS: Mean age was 69.6 years (standard error = 0.18) and 51.8% were female. Forty percent reported one or more falls at baseline. Older age, being f...

Related factors of cognitive impairment in community-dwelling older adults in Beijing Longitudinal Study of Aging.
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of cognitive impairment among the older adults in Beijing was high. More attention should be paid to the identification of and intervention for factors influencing cognitive impairment, and health education should be carried out to improve the quality of life of the older adults.
