Effect of chemotherapy and different chemotherapy regimens on bone health among Chinese breast cancer women in different menstrual status: a self-control study
CONCLUSION: Chemotherapy might induce lumbar vertebrae BMD loss and spine osteoporosis with regimen differences among Chinese BC patients. Calcium/VitD supplementation could improve bone turnover markers, bone metabolism indicators, and bone mineral density. Early interventions on bone health are needed for BC patients during chemotherapy.PMID:37642751 | DOI:10.1007/s00520-023-07960-8

Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis larvae ethanol extract inhibits RANKL-stimulated osteoclastogenesis and ameliorates bone loss in ovariectomized mice
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Jul 4;165:115112. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115112. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTModulation of osteoclast formation could be a therapeutic target for inhibiting pathological bone destruction. The receptor activator of nuclear factor (NF)-κB ligand (RANKL) is known to be an essential factor in osteoclast differentiation and activation inducers. However, whether Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis (P. brevitarsis) larvae-a traditional animal-derived medicine used in many Asian countries-can inhibit RANKL-induced osteoclast formation and prevent ovariectomy (OVX)-induced bone loss has not been evaluat...

Effect of Magnetic Nanoparticles on Hormone Level Changes During Perimenopausal Period and Regulation of Bone Metabolism
Cell Mol Biol (Noisy-le-grand). 2022 Dec 31;68(12):91-96. doi: 10.14715/cmb/2022.68.12.17.ABSTRACTThis work aimed to explore the effect of nerve magnetic stimulation based on superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticle (NP) on bone metabolism during the perimenopausal period. First, the multifunctional water-soluble polymer PTMP-PMAA was utilized as the ligand. PTMP-MAA@ Fe3O4 NP with high magnetization was prepared by the co-precipitation method, and NPX diffraction pattern analysis and in vitro stability analysis were implemented. Then, NPs were co-cultured with 293T cells, and the cytotoxicity was detected by the CCK-8 method....

Reversibility in male idiopathic osteoporosis possible
Endocrinol Diabetes Metab Case Rep. 2023 Apr 19;2023(2):22-0407. doi: 10.1530/EDM-22-0407. Print 2023 Apr 1.ABSTRACTSUMMARY: A 44-year-old athletic man presented in 2009 with severe low back pain. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry revealed severe osteoporosis; serum testosterone was 189 ng/dL while serum estradiol (E2) measured by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry was 8 pg/mL. DNA was extracted and sequenced from a blood sample from the patient since his maternal first cousin also had low bone mass and both patients were screened for aromatase dysfunction by PCR analysis for the CYP19A1 gene, which encodes aromatase. ...

Saturated fatty acids and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids improve metabolic parameters in ovariectomized female mice
Endocrinology. 2023 Apr 8:bqad059. doi: 10.1210/endocr/bqad059. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn menopausal and postmenopausal women, obesity, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and gut dysbiosis are induced by loss of ovarian 17β-estradiol (E2). Dietary fatty acid profile high in omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), specifically linoleic acid (LA), and low in coconut oil saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and omega-3 PUFAs may worsen symptoms of estrogen deficiency. To investigate this hypothesis, vehicle (Veh)- or estradiol benzoate (EB)-treated ovariectomized C57BL/6J and transgenic fat-1 mice were fed high-fat die...

The impacts of menopausal hormone therapy on longer-term health consequences of ovarian hormone deficiency
This study on the longer-term health consequences of ovarian hormone deficiency (OHD) received the Henry Burger Prize in 2022. Osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and dementia are major degenerative diseases that are also causally associated with OHD. Two randomized controlled trials (RCTs) revealed no significant difference in bone mineral density by adding alendronate to ongoing menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) or combining alendronate at MHT initiation. Another RCT pursuing the effects on fracture recurrence and total mortality in women with hip fracture disclosed that MHT with percutaneous estradiol gel (PEG) and micr...

Diosgenin reduces bone loss through the regulation of gut microbiota in ovariectomized rats
This study aimed to investigate the effects of DIO on the gut microbiota (GM) of ovariectomized (OVX) osteoporotic rats. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into sham operation (sham + vehicle group) or ovariectomy. For 12 weeks, OVX rats were treated using a vehicle (OVX + vehicle group) and DIO (OVX + DIO group). Subsequently, ELISA was conducted to determine serum estradiol levels, micro-CT scanning was performed to evaluate bone quality, and feces were collected for metagenomics sequencing to examine the structure and function of GM. Raw reads were filtered to remove chimera sequences. Operational taxonomi...

Approach to the Patient: Pharmacological therapies for fracture risk reduction in adults with osteogenesis imperfecta
CONCLUSION: Fracture rates are elevated in adults with OI. Although clinical trial data are limited, bisphosphonates and teriparatide may be useful in improving BMD. Further research is needed to develop medications for adults with OI that will lead to definite fracture rate reduction.PMID:36658750 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgad035
