Transdermal opioid patch in treatment of paroxysmal autonomic instability with dystonia with multiple cerebral insults: A case report
Rationale: Paroxysmal autonomic instability with dystonia (PAID) is an underdiagnosed syndrome that describes a collection of symptoms following diverse cerebral insults, such as traumatic brain injury, hydrocephalus, hemorrhagic stroke, or brain anoxia. It is manifested by systemic high blood pressure, hyperthermia, tachycardia, tachypnea, diaphoresis, intermittent agitation, and certain forms of dystonia. Patient concerns: A semi-comatose 46-year-old man was transferred from the regional rehabilitation hospital with various complaints involving fluctuating vital signs, including uncontrolled hyperthermia, hypertensi...

Left ventricular geometry and electrocardiographic criteria in assessing left ventricular hypertrophy in sickle cell anemia patients
CONCLUSION: Sickle cell anemia predisposes to abnormal LV geometric patterns, especially eccentric LVH. There may be a need to review the electrocardiographic cut off points for defining eccentric LVH in the SCA populace.PMID:35803775 | DOI:10.1016/j.jnma.2022.06.006

Torsades de Pointes After Administration of Low-Dose Aripiprazole (February).
CONCLUSIONS:Five days of low-dose aripiprazole therapy was associated with the development of TdP in a man with minimal risk factors. Clinicians should be aware of this potential adverse drug event with aripiprazole. PMID: 23362038 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Exploring the Link Between Cardiovascular Reactivity and End-Organ Damage in African and Caucasian Men: The SABPA Study.
CONCLUSIONS African men showed a suppressed SV, possibly as a result of an increased ventricular afterload leading to end-organ damage. PMID: 23382329 [PubMed - in process]

Cardiovascular considerations in middle-aged athletes at risk for coronary artery disease.
This article reviews exercise-related risks for sudden death and the performance of a global cardiovascular risk assessment. The need for additional preexercise risk stratification with electrocardiogram, graded exercise testing, or echocardiography is outlined. In addition, the optimum choice of medications for hypertension or dyslipidemia treatment and the effects of these medications and aspirin on endurance exercise are reviewed. Assessment of cardiovascular risk and target organ damage among adult patients with primary hypertension in Thika Level 5 Hospital, Kenya: a criteria‐based clinical audit
ConclusionIn Thika Level 5 Hospital, audit and feedback has a poor impact on assessment of cardiovascular risk and target organ damage but positive impact on blood pressure control and prescription practices. Time and sample size may have affected observed results. Additional audits and alternative QI strategies are warranted.

Electrocardiographic abnormalities and cardiac arrhythmias in structural brain lesions
Abstract: Cardiac arrhythmias and electrocardiographic abnormalities are frequently observed after acute cerebrovascular events. The precise mechanism that leads to the development of these arrhythmias is still uncertain, though increasing evidence suggests that it is mainly due to autonomic nervous system dysregulation. In massive brain lesions sympathetic predominance and parasympathetic withdrawal during the first 72h are associated with the occurrence of severe secondary complications in the first week. Right insular cortex lesions are also related with sympathetic overactivation and with a higher incidence of electroca...

Relationship Between ST-Segment Recovery and Clinical Outcomes After Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention: The HORIZONS-AMI ECG Substudy Report Myocardial Infarction
Conclusions— In this large international study, absent STR 60 minutes after primary PCI was present in 1 in 5 patients with ST-segment–elevation myocardial infarction and was a significant independent predictor of major adverse cardiovascular events and target vessel revascularization at 3 years. Abstract 364: Maternal History of Hypertension and Incident Atrial Fibrillation According to Blood Pressure Category in a General Urban Population: The Suita Study Poster Session II
Conclusions: A maternal history of hypertension is a predictor of incident AF. For persons with a maternal history of hypertension, BP control would be under normal BP for AF prevention.

Running 7 minutes a day 'halves heart death risk'
Conclusion This well-conducted cohort study found running is associated with a reduction in risk of death from any cause and death from cardiovascular disease during a 15-year follow-up. It calculated running was associated with a three-year increase in life expectancy. The study also found short duration running (less than 51 minutes a week, equivalent to less than approximately seven minutes a day) or running at slow speeds was associated with a reduction in risk. As this was a cohort study, it cannot show running caused the reduction in risk of death. It is possible there were other differences between runners and n...
