Early post-stroke seizures in a sample of Egyptian patients with first-ever stroke
Conclusion: The incidence of early post-stroke seizures was high in our study and was positively associated with a poor functional outcome, a higher in-hospital mortality rate and a longer duration of in-hospital stay. The most important risk factors were ICH, the cortical site of involvement and a large size of the lesion.

Role of Brain Biomarker in Predicting Clinical Outcome in Hypertensive Cerebrovascular Ischemic Stroke
This study was undertaken to evaluate the role of serum neuron specific enolase (NSE) in prediction of disability and neurological worsening in hypertensive ischemic cerebrovascular stroke. 80 hypertensive ischemic stroke patients diagnosed by a neurologist as per WHO definition along with radiological findings suggestive of cerebrovascular stroke and differentiating from hemorrhagic stroke and 60 controls having essential hypertension coming to hospital because of regular checkup or headache but with no neurological disease were included in the study. Neurological disability was assessed by NIHSS at the time of admission ...

Acute ischemic stroke thrombolysis with tenecteplase: An institutional experience from South India
Conclusion: This study confirms the efficacy and safety of tenecteplase for stroke thrombolysis in our clinical setting. Tenecteplase appears to be a suitable option for stroke thrombolysis in resource-limited settings, considering its cost-effectiveness, and ease of administration.

Stroke Prevention in Atrial Fibrillation - Which is the BEST?: Balanced in Efficacy and Safety as a Thromboprophylactic.
Authors: Suvarna V Abstract Stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation (AF) has reached an exciting phase with a plethora of newer, potentially more efficacious and safer agents being introduced for physicians to select from. Dabigatran belongs to a class of anticoagulants called direct thrombin inhibitors, while rivaroxaban, apixaban, and edoxaban are direct Factor Xa inhibitors. Purely from a therapeutic endpoint perspective-based on the action of anticoagulants in reducing cardioembolic stroke-in clinical trials, one should look at whether a new anticoagulant in patients with AF prevents ischemic stroke. From a ne...

Role of TLR4 (C1196T) and CD14 (C-260T) Polymorphisms in Development of Ischemic Stroke, Its Subtypes and Hemorrhagic Stroke
AbstractIn the present study, we evaluated the association ofTLR4 andCD14 polymorphisms, i.e. C1196T and C-260T, respectively, with ischemic stroke (n = 700), its subtypes and hemorrhagic stroke (n = 300) in a South Indian population from Telangana. The genotypes were determined using PCR–RFLP, and the strength of association between genotypes and stroke was determined by odds ratio with 95% confidence interval (CI) and chi-square analysis. The results revealed a lack of association forTLR4 variant with ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke, although a significant association was observed with the subtypes extracran...

What Causes Microcephaly?
Discussion Microcephaly is usually defined as an occipitofrontal head circumference (OFC) more than 2 standard deviations (SD) below the mean for sex, age and ethnicity. Severe microcephaly is used for OFC < 3 standard deviations. Rates of microcephaly range from 0.5-12 patients/10,000 live births. The OFC should be measured at every well child visit and at other opportunities and plotted on standard growth charts. The OFC is measured using a nonelastic tape measure around the largest part of the head with the tape measure held above the eyebrows and ears. It is a highly reproducible measurement. There are several diff...

Pharmacologic Reperfusion Therapy with Indigenous Tenecteplase in 15,222 patients with ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction - The Indian Registry.
CONCLUSION: This study confirms the safety and efficacy of indigenous tenecteplase in Indian patients with STEMI, including high risk subgroups. It also highlights the fact that delayed treatment denotes denial of benefits of pharmacologic reperfusion therapy. PMID: 23993004 [PubMed - in process]
