Dual antithrombotic therapy with DOACs after ACS or PCI in Atrial Fibrillation: A meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
ConclusionsIn patients with AF and recent ACS or PCI, the use of dual antithrombotic therapy with DOACs was associated with less major bleeding, and major bleeding or clinically relevant non-major bleeding, compared to triple therapy. The use of dual therapy also shows non-significantly higher composite of death/ischemic events but no difference in mortality.

Routine Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa Inhibitor Therapy in ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction: A Meta-analysis
ConclusionsRoutine GPI administration in STEMI resulted in a reduction in mortality, driven by reductions in recurrent ischemic events—however predominantly in pre-prasugrel/ticagrelor trials.

Perioperative Atrial Fibrillation in Noncardiac Surgeries for Malignancies and One-Year Recurrence
ConclusionsAF recurs in approximately 30% of patients with POAF with malignancy in the subsequent year; most recurrences are asymptomatic.RésuméContexteIl arrive fréquemment qu’un patient subissant une intervention chirurgicale non cardiaque présente une fibrillation auriculaire périopératoire (FAPO).

Efficacy and Safety of High-intensity Statins in Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction: An Asian Perspective
ConclusionsAMI patients in Taiwan with HIS had similar clinical outcomes to those with non-HIS. Using HIS for effective reduction of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol is safe in Taiwan.

Bleeding tolerance among patients with atrial fibrillation on oral anticoagulation
ConclusionsThe key determinants of the Bleeding Ratio among anticoagulated AF patients are age, prior thromboembolic and bleeding episodes. The study could support identification of AF patients who need additional effort to increase their acceptance of a life-long OAC therapy.

Role of Nonsteroidal Antiinflammatory Drugs in the Association Between Osteoarthritis and Cardiovascular Diseases: A Longitudinal Study
ConclusionThe findings of this first study to evaluate the mediating role of NSAIDs in the relationship between OA and CVD suggest that NSAID use contributes substantially to the OA –CVD association.

Post-stroke Depression Increases Disability More Than 15% in Ischemic Stroke Survivors: A Case-Control Study
We performed a retrospective, case-control study in consecutive ischemic stroke patients admitted to our stroke rehabilitation unit. Patients were matched for severity of neurological impairment (evaluated with the Canadian Neurological Scale, CNS), age (difference within 1 year) and onset admission interval (difference within 3 days). Participants were divided into two subgroups according to the presence or absence of PSD. Aim was to assess the specific influence of post-stroke depression (PSD) and antidepressant treatment on both basal functional status and rehabilitation outcomes. All PSD patients were treated primarily...

Clot lysis time predicts stroke during anticoagulant therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation
ConclusionsImpaired fibrinolysis may predict thromboembolic events in AF patients receiving VKA.

Value of routine echocardiography in the management of stroke.
Abstract BACKGROUND: Transthoracic echocardiography is routinely performed in patients with stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) to help plan secondary stroke management, but recent data evaluating its usefulness in this context are lacking. We sought to evaluate the value of echocardiography for identifying clinically actionable findings for secondary stroke prevention. METHODS: We conducted a multicentre cohort study of patients admitted to hospital with stroke or TIA between 2010 and 2015 at 2 academic hospitals in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Clinically actionable echocardiographic findings for secondar...

Platelet Indices as a Marker of Severity in Non-diabetic NonHypertensive Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients.
Conclusion: In patients of ischemic stroke platelet indices may be used for predicting severity of motor deficit. Although larger sample size and multivariate analysis is required before this can be used regularly in clinical practice. PMID: 31325260 [PubMed - in process]

Treating stroke patients just 15 minutes earlier can save lives
Initiating stroke treatment just 15 minutes faster can save lives and prevent disability, according to a new UCLA-led study, published today inJAMA. The research also determined that busier hospitals — those that treat more than 450 people for stroke each year — have better outcomes than those that treat fewer than 400 stroke patients per year.Researchers at the  David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and five other institutions in the U.S. and Canada, examined data for 6,756 people who experienced ischemic strokes. The patients ’ median age was 71, and 51.2% were women. The researchers looked at stroke patients ’...

Trends in chronic disease incidence rates from the Canadian Chronic Disease Surveillance System.
CONCLUSION: Chronic disease incidence estimates based on CCDSS data are decreasing over time, but not at a constant rate. Further investigations are needed to assess if this decrease is associated with changes in health status, data quality, or physician practices. As well, population characteristics that may influence changing incidence trends also require exploration. PMID: 31210047 [PubMed - in process]
