Melatonin regulates the circadian rhythm to ameliorate postoperative sleep disorder and neurobehavioral abnormalities in aged mice
CONCLUSIONS: Melatonin receptors in SCN, circadian rhythm, and ERK/CREB signaling pathway participate in the pathophysiological processes of PSD and delirium-like behavior. Melatonin intervention could be a potential preventative approach for PSD and delirium.PMID:37736695 | DOI:10.1111/cns.14436

Sleep Spindle Generation Before and After Epilepsy Surgery: A Source Imaging Study in Children with Drug-Resistant Epilepsy
CONCLUSIONS: Our data indicate alterations in the EEG slow spindles after resective epilepsy surgery. Fast spindle generation on the contrary did not change after surgery. Although the study is limited by its retrospective nature, lack of healthy controls, and reduced cortical spatial sampling, our findings suggest a spatial relationship between the slow spindles and the epileptogenic generators.PMID:37737957 | DOI:10.1007/s10548-023-01007-1

Network Analysis of Health-related Behaviors, Insomnia, and Depression Among Urban Left-behind Adolescents in China
This study aims to examine the symptom level associations among multiple health-related behaviors, insomnia, and depression in urban LBA. Data on a sample of urban LBA aged 11-19 (N = 3,601) from the Adolescent Mental Health Survey in Shenzhen, China, were used. Health-related behaviors (i.e., Internet use, physical inactivity, social jetlag, smoking, and alcohol consumption), insomnia, and depressive symptoms were assessed using a self-administered questionnaire. Graphical Gaussian Model (GGM) was used to describe key bridging nodes in an undirected network. Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) was used to construct a directed ne...

Hypoxic burden to guide CPAP treatment allocation in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea: a < em > Post-hoc < /em > study of the ISAACC trial
Eur Respir J. 2023 Sep 21:2300828. doi: 10.1183/13993003.00828-2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHypoxic burden (HB) has emerged as a strong predictor of cardiovascular risk in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). We aimed to assess the potential of HB to predict the cardiovascular benefit of treating OSA with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).Post-hoc analysis of the ISAACC trial (NCT01335087), including non-sleepy patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) diagnosed with OSA (apnoea-hypopnoea index ≥15 events·h-1) by respiratory polygraphy. Patients were randomised to CPAP or Usual Care and followed for a minim...

Seasonal Trends in Emergency Department Visits for Mental and Behavioral Health Conditions Among Children and Adolescents Aged 5-17 Years - United States, January 2018-June 2023
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2023 Sep 22;72(38):1032-1040. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7238a3.ABSTRACTMental and behavioral health conditions among school-aged children, including substance use disorders and overall emotional well-being, are a public health concern in the United States. Timely data on seasonal patterns in child and adolescent conditions can guide optimal timing of prevention and intervention strategies. CDC examined emergency department (ED) visit data from the National Syndromic Surveillance Program for 25 distinct conditions during January 2018-June 2023 among U.S. children and adolescents aged 5-17 years, strati...
