Older age is a strong predictor for poor outcome in intracerebral haemorrhage: the INTERACT2 study
Conclusion: In the INTERACT2 cohort, older people had more severe ICH and worse outcomes (death, major disability and HRQoL). These data will help guide clinicians manage older people with haemorrhagic stroke. Clinical Trial Registration: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov (NCT00716079).

Depression, Vascular Factors, and Risk of Dementia in Primary Care: A Retrospective Cohort Study
ConclusionDepression in later life increases the risk of dementia. The effect is particularly high in individuals with depression and vascular disorders. Targeting late‐onset depression in individuals with vascular disorders might lower dementia risk by preventing cerebrovascular changes.

An abbreviated German version of the Sense of Competence Questionnaire among informal caregivers of relatives who had a stroke: development and validation
In this study, we evaluated the psychometric properties of the German version of the SCQ with informal caregivers of stroke patients. Baseline data of a randomized controlled trial (n = 122) and survey data (n = 76) of caregivers of stroke patients were used. Data were collected at the caregiver’s or the care receiver’s home or over the telephone. We evaluated the homogeneity, the construct validity, and the clinical validity of the German version and the homogeneity of a new abbreviated version. The homogeneity of the SCQ indicates good reliability (Cronbach’s alpha: 0.89). The three-factor structure of the SCQ ...

Baseline characteristic of patients presenting with lacunar stroke and cerebral small vessel disease may predict future development of depression
ConclusionsBaseline functional status and severity of WMH and development of cognitive decline predict the occurence of late‐onset depression in patients with SVD. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The effects of observation of walking in a living room environment, on physical, cognitive, and quality of life related outcomes in older adults with dementia: a study protocol of a randomized controlled trial
This study examines the effect of the observation of walking people on multiple daily life functions and quality of life related factors in older adults with dementia. A strength of this study is that the intervention does not require much time and attention from caregivers or researchers. A challenge of the study is therefore to get to know for how long residents watch the videos. However, the design implies a high feasibility of the study, as well as a high applicability of the intervention into daily care.Trial registrationNTR4708. Date of registration: 31 July 2014.

Cognitive performance in community-dwelling older adults with stroke and the contribution of age and diffuse subcortical damage: a population-based study in rural Ecuador (The Atahualpa Project).
CONCLUSIONS: Interaction of age and diffuse subcortical damage are major determinants for poor cognitive performance among stroke patients. PMID: 25724660 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Prevalence, associated factors, mood and cognitive outcomes of traumatic brain injury in later life: the health in men study (HIMS)
ConclusionsHistory of TBI is common in older men, and is associated with increased risk of depression and cognitive impairment. If this association is truly causal, then the effective reduction of events leading to TBI (e.g., motor vehicle accidents and falls) may also decrease the prevalence of depression and cognitive impairment in later life. Leydig Cell Aging and Hypogonadism.
Abstract Leydig cell testosterone (T) production is reduced with age, resulting in reduced serum T levels (hypogonadism). A number of cellular changes have been identified in the steroidogenic pathway of aged Leydig cells that are associated with reduced T formation, including reductions in luteinizing hormone (LH)-stimulated cAMP production, the cholesterol transport proteins steroidogenic acute regulatory (STAR) protein and translocator protein (TSPO), and downstream steroidogenic enzymes of the mitochondria and smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Many of the changes in steroid formation that characterize aged Leydig ...

Pain among institutionalized stroke patients and its relation to emotional distress and social engagement
ConclusionsPain is a serious and multidimensional problem among institutionalized stroke patients. It is related to increased ED, which in turn can be a pathway to low SE as an indicator of social vulnerability. Future research should reveal how pain management in nursing homes can be tailored to the needs of this patient group. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Evidence of an Association between Age-Related Functional Modifications and Pathophysiological Changes in Zebrafish Heart
Conclusion: These data suggest that cardiac functional modifications in zebrafish are comparable to those in humans and may partly be due to changes in the cardiovascular system including cardiac fetal gene reprogramming, myocardial density, and epicardial vessel dimensions.Gerontology

Microstructural abnormality in white matter, regulatory T lymphocytes, and depressive symptoms after stroke
ConclusionsFA reductions in the anterior limb of the internal capsule cause abnormality in the frontal‐subcortical circuits and confer a biological vulnerability, which in combination with environmental stressors results in the onset of depression. Our findings also demonstrated the possibility of preventing post‐stroke depression by targeting the role of regulatory T lymphocytes in brain tissue repair and regeneration after stroke.

Suicide in Stroke Survivors: Epidemiology and Prevention
Abstract Stroke is a dramatic event and is associated with potentially severe consequences, including disability, mortality, and social costs. Stroke may occur at any age; however, most strokes occur in individuals aged 65 years and older. Previous research has found that stroke increases suicide risk, especially among women and younger patients. The aim of the current review is to investigate the relationship between suicide and stroke in order to determine which stroke patients are at elevated risk for suicide. Moreover, we review the literature in order to provide pharmacological treatment strategies for strok...

Physical Activity Predicts Microstructural Integrity in Memory-Related Networks in Very Old Adults
Conclusions. Being exercise active predicts greater memory-related microstructural integrity in older adults. Future studies in older adults with diabetes are warranted to examine the neuroprotective effect of PA in these networks.
