New aspects in the pathomechanism of diseases of civilization, particularly psychosomatic disorders. Part 2. Chronic hypocapnia and hypercapnia in the medical practice.
Authors: Sikter A, Rihmer Z, Guevara R Abstract The authors seek to find new connections between recent results of biology and older theories. This paper aims to assemble the jigsaw puzzle. The theoretical background of the hypothesis was described in the previous issue of the journal (Sikter et al. 2017a). Human stress response often coexists with persistent hypocapnia or hypercapnia - developing via psychosomatic pathomechanism - which can lead to mental and psychosomatic illnesses. Chronic hypocapnia mainly generates hyperarousal disorders which may be reversible for an extended time, however, vicious cycles may...

Thimerosal-containing hepatitis B vaccine exposure is highly associated with childhood obesity: A case-control study using the vaccine safety datalink
Conclusions: In a dose-response manner, the present study associates an increased organic mercury exposure from Thimerosal-containing hepatitis B vaccines with an increased risk of obesity diagnosis, and suggests that Thimerosal is an obesogen. The results are biologically plausible and future studies are needed to examine this phenomenon.

Association of Low-Moderate Arsenic Exposure and Arsenic Metabolism with Incident Diabetes and Insulin Resistance in the Strong Heart Family Study
Conclusions: Among participants without baseline prediabetes, arsenic exposure was associated with incident diabetes. Low MMA% was cross-sectional and prospectively associated with higher HOMA2-IR. Research is needed to confirm possible interactions of arsenic metabolism with B vitamins and AS3MT variants on diabetes risk. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP2566 Received: 23 July 2017 Revised: 30 October 2017 Accepted: 7 November 2017 Published: 20 December 2017 Address correspondence to M. Association between Exposure to p,p ′-DDT and Its Metabolite p,p′-DDE with Obesity: Integrated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: We classified p,p′-DDT and p,p′-DDE as “presumed” to be obesogenic for humans, based on a moderate level of primary human evidence, a moderate level of primary in vivo evidence, and a moderate level of supporting evidence from in vivo and in vitro studies. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP527 Received: 17 May 2016 Revised: 04 May 2017 Accepted: 09 May 2017 Published: 18 September 2017 Please address correspondence to M.A. La Merrill, Dept. of Environmental Toxicology, University of California, Davis, 1 Shields Ave., 4245 Meyer Hall, Davis, CA 95616-5270 USA. Prenatal Exposure to Mercury: Associations with Global DNA Methylation and Hydroxymethylation in Cord Blood and in Childhood
Conclusions: Prenatal mercury exposure was associated with lower %-5hmC genomic content and a corresponding increase in the ratio of %-5mC to %-5hmC in cord blood. This association was persistent in early but not midchildhood blood. Our results demonstrate the potential malleability of epigenetic modifications associated with mercury exposure in utero. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP1467 Received: 06 December 2016 Revised: 04 May 2017 Accepted: 19 May 2017 Published: 29 August 2017 Address correspondence to A. The Impact of DNA Extraction Methods on Stool Bacterial and Fungal Microbiota Community Recovery
Conclusion Our understanding of the human gut microbiome role in health and disease depends on obtaining reliable and comparable microbial data of both bacterial and fungal communities. To achieve this goal, using an appropriate methodology is an important step. Previous efforts in standardizing methodology for bacterial microbiome research lead to the recommendation of using the IHMS protocol Q worldwide, to ensure data reproducibility and comparability. In this study, we evaluated and compared the impact of five different DNA extraction methods including the IHMS protocol Q, on the representation of fecal bacterial and ...

Endocrine Disruptors and Health Effects in Africa: A Call for Action
Conclusion: To address the many challenges posed by EDCs, we argue that Africans should take the lead in prioritization and evaluation of environmental hazards, including EDCs. We recommend the institution of education and training programs for chemical users, adoption of the precautionary principle, establishment of biomonitoring programs, and funding of community-based epidemiology and wildlife research programs led and funded by African institutes and private companies. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP1774 Received: 16 February 2017 Revised: 22 May 2017 Accepted: 24 May 2017 Published: 22 August 2017 Address correspond...
