‘ Take Action ’ : Dave McGillivray ’s Message To Anyone Ignoring Symptoms Of Heart Disease
BOSTON (CBS) – There aren’t many people who run their age in miles every year. Dave McGillivray does. From the time he was a boy, he’s celebrated his good health and love of running with a personal challenge that obviously gets more challenging with age. His last “full” birthday run was last year: 63 miles. This year, by necessity, he split the effort into 32 miles of running and 32 miles of biking. A feat, to be sure. But this year, he is facing a challenge for which there is no training. McGillivray, arguably one of the most fit people on the planet, has coronary artery disease and is preparing to undergo ...

Intracranial Arterial Dolichoectasia and Stenosis Clinical Sciences
This study comprised 1237 participants (aged 57.2±9.4 years, 37.6% men) who underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance angiography. IADE was assessed based on basilar artery dolichoectasia (diameter, height of bifurcation, and laterality of basilar artery) and dilation of basilar artery and internal carotid artery (intracranial volume-adjusted diameter ≥2 SD). ICAS was defined as any degree of stenosis in at least 1 intracranial artery. The neuroimaging markers of cerebral small vessel disease, including lacunes, white matter hyperintensities, microbleeds, dilated perivascular spaces, and brain at...

Atherosclerosis, Periodontal Disease, and Treatment with Resolvins
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThis review aims to discuss the existing evidence on the link between atherosclerosis and periodontitis by particularly presenting new findings that link the pathology and therapy of these diseases. Acute vascular ischemic events that can lead to stroke or myocardial infarction are initiated by inflammatory processes leading to rupture or erosion of plaques susceptible to thrombosis ( “high risk” or “vulnerable”). These are highly inflamed plaques residing in the media and adventitia that may not be detected by angiography measurments of luminal narrowing. Statistically significant excess r...

Management and clinical outcome of stable coronary artery disease in Austria : Results from 5  years of the CLARIFY registry.
CONCLUSION: Characteristics of Austrian outpatients with stable CAD corresponded to those of patients with CAD in other developed countries. Medical treatments following the recommendations of the European guidelines were prescribed in the majority of patients; however, recommended goals of life style interventions including a heart rate less than 60 bpm and general risk factor management were not achieved by a high proportion of patients. Heart rate control and life style changes remain unmet needs of cardiovascular care in Austria. PMID: 28913755 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

P-016 Relationship between stroke recurrence, infarct pattern, and vascular distribution in patients with symptomatic intracranial stenosis
Conclusion We determined that basilar artery stenosis was most likely to present as a perforator stroke. As expected, patients discharged with suboptimal medical therapy were twice as likely to have a recurrent stroke (29% versus 13%). Among patients with optimal medical therapy, no recurrent strokes were seen in patients with embolic infarct pattern, while 57% recurrence rate was seen in patients with a watershed infarct pattern, suggesting that an embolic infarct pattern on initial presentation is possibly related to underlying plaque instability that is modifiable with optimal medical therapy. On the other hand, initial...

High Rate of Stenosis Progression Identified with Routine Carotid Doppler Surveillance (P5.284)
Conclusions:Among this prospective cohort of asymptomatic ≥50% carotid stenosis subjects followed with carotid Doppler imaging, high rates of carotid stenosis progression occurred despite contemporary intensive medical management, and significant TIA/stroke rates were also noted, especially among those with ≥80% stenosis. These results support further study of routine carotid Doppler surveillance in management of asymptomatic carotid stenosis.Study Supported by:Grants from the American Heart Association (15GRNT25270010), NIH (1 U54GM104938) and the VA Clinical Science Research & Development Service (CX000340)Disc...
