Prevalence and prognosis significance of cardiovascular disease in cancer patients: a population-based study.
CONCLUSIONS: Cancer patients are vulnerable to comorbidity related to heart and cerebral disease. The influence of comorbidities on prognosis is noticeable and specific both for the type of cancer and comorbidities. PMID: 31562288 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association of 18bp insertion/deletion polymorphism, at −2549 position of VEGF gene, with diabetic vascular complications in type 2 diabetes mellitus
ConclusionsThe multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the D allele in the promoter region of the VEGF gene is an independent risk factor of DR irrespective of other laboratory and clinical variables in T2DM patients. Our study suggests that I/D allele in the studied gene is associated with HF and strokes.

Subclinical atrial fibrillation - what is the risk of stroke?
Authors: Plasek J, Taborsky M Abstract Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia and as such, it has become a significant public health issue due to its impact on patient morbidity and mortality. The prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) almost doubled in the last decade, being currently 2% in unselected patient populations. Its occurrence varies with age (present in almost 20% of octogenarians) and concomitant diseases. The most prevalent concomitant diseases are hypertension, diabetes, heart failure, renal failure, and cognitive decline. Cognitive decline or stroke may be actually the first manifestation...

Obesity and cardiovascular disease: revisiting an old relationship
A wealth of clinical and epidemiological evidence has linked obesity to a broad spectrum of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) including coronary heart disease, heart failure, hypertension, stroke, atrial fibrillation and sudden cardiac death. Obesity can increase CVD morbidity and mortality directly and indirectly. Direct effects are mediated by obesity-induced structural and functional adaptations of the cardiovascular system to accommodate excess body weight, as well as by adipokine effects on inflammation and vascular homeostasis.

ADVANCIS Score Predicts Acute Kidney Injury After Percutaneous Coronary Intervention for Acute Coronary Syndrome.
In conclusion, the ADVANCIS score is a novel, simple, robust tool for predicting the risk of incident AKI after PCI for ACS, and it can aid in risk stratification to monitor patient care. PMID: 29559842 [PubMed - in process]

Leukocyte RhoA exchange factor Arhgef1 mediates vascular inflammation and atherosclerosis
Abnormal activity of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system plays a causal role in the development of hypertension, atherosclerosis, and associated cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction, stroke, and heart failure. As both a vasoconstrictor and a proinflammatory mediator, angiotensin II (Ang II) is considered a potential link between hypertension and atherosclerosis. However, a role for Ang II–induced inflammation in atherosclerosis has not been clearly established, and the molecular mechanisms and intracellular signaling pathways involved are not known. Here, we demonstrated that the RhoA GEF Arhgef1 is e...

Restless legs syndrome and cardiovascular diseases: A case-control study
ConclusionDespite some limitations in the design of this study, we found that most of the treated patients for primary RLS had no association with CVD and hypertension after controlling for key potential confounders. Comorbid CVD or hypertension was associated with cardiovascular risk factors, but not with RLS features except for older age at onset.

Prevalence of Atrial Fibrillation and Antithrombotic Therapy in Hemodialysis Patients: Cross-Sectional Results of the Vienna InVestigation of AtriaL Fibrillation and Thromboembolism in Patients on HemoDIalysis (VIVALDI)
ConclusionsThe prevalence of AF is high amongst HD patients and is associated with age, sex, and distinct comorbidities. Practice patterns of antithrombotic treatment indicate a lack of consensus for stroke prevention in HD patients with AF.

Altered lipid metabolism in the aging kidney identified by three layered omic analysis.
Abstract Aging-associated diseases and their comorbidities affect the life of a constantly growing proportion of the population in developed countries. At the center of these comorbidities are changes of kidney structure and function as age-related chronic kidney disease predisposes to the development of cardiovascular diseases such as stroke, myocardial infarction or heart failure. To detect molecular mechanisms involved in kidney aging, we analyzed gene expression profiles of kidneys from adult and aged wild-type mice by transcriptomic, proteomic and targeted lipidomic methodologies. Interestingly, transcriptome...

Haemodynamic Responses to Selective Vagal Nerve Stimulation under Enalapril Medication in Rats
by Mortimer Gierthmuehlen, Thomas Stieglitz, Josef Zentner, Dennis T. T. Plachta Selective vagal nerve stimulation (sVNS) has been demonstrated to lower blood pressure (BP) in rats without causing major side effects. This method might be adapted for the treatment of therapy-resistant hypertension in patients. Converting enzyme inhibitors (CEIs) are among the first drugs that are administered for arterial hypertension and prominently reduce BP primarily by interacting with the renin-angiotensin system of the kidneys. Beyond the reduction of BP, CEI have a positive effect on the survival rate after myocardial infarction; th...

Multiscale Entropy of the Heart Rate Variability for the Prediction of an Ischemic Stroke in Patients with Permanent Atrial Fibrillation
We examined whether a novel complexity measurement of the heart rate variability called multiscale entropy (MSE) was a useful risk stratification measure of ischemic strokes in patients with permanent AF. Methods and Results We examined 173 consecutive patients (age 69±11 years) with permanent AF who underwent 24-hour Holter electrocardiography from April 2005 to December 2006. We assessed several frequency ranges of the MSE and CHA2DS2-VASc score (1 point for congestive heart failure, hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, an age 65 to 74 years, and a female sex and 2 points for an age≥75 years and a stroke or trans...
