Microglia Modulate Cortical Spreading Depolarizations After Ischemic Stroke: A Narrative Review
AbstractCortical spreading depolarizations (CSDs) are characterized by waves of diminished electroencephalography activity that propagate across the cortex with subsequent loss of ionic homeostasis. CSDs have been found in many pathological conditions, including migraine, traumatic brain injury, and ischemic stroke. Because of CSD-associated ionic and metabolic disturbances at the peri-infarct area after ischemic stroke, it is thought that CSDs exacerbate tissue infarction and worsen clinical outcomes. Microglia, the main innate immune cells in the brain, are among the first responders to brain tissue damage. Recent studie...

Epidemiology of Moyamoya Angiopathy in Eastern India
ConclusionMMA is an important etiological consideration in patients with stroke, especially in children. It can present with a myriad of transient neurological symptoms, frequently overlooked, leading to delayed diagnosis, and contributing to socio-economic burden. Indian MMA showed aberrations in its gender predisposition, age distribution, frequency of familial cases, disease manifestation, and type of stroke, in comparison to its Japanese and Caucasian counterparts pointing to the inter- and intra-continent differences of MMA phenotype. Future development of the Indian MMA national registry is of essence.

The Efficacy and Safety of Cilostazol vs. Aspirin for Secondary Stroke Prevention: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
ConclusionsConsistent with previous studies, cilostazol monotherapy is superior to aspirin monotherapy in reducing the rate of any strokes and the bleeding risk after having a stroke. However, the use of cilostazol monotherapy is associated with several adverse life outcomes such as headaches and dizziness.

Health and cognition among adults with and without Traumatic Brain Injury: A matched case-control study
CONCLUSION: Individuals with TBI have greater odds of selected neurobehavioral conditions compared to their demographically similar uninjured peers. Among persons with TBI there was a stronger association between poorer self-rated health and cognition than controls. TBI is increasingly conceptualized as a chronic disease; current findings suggest post-TBI health management requires cognitive supports.PMID:35143349 | DOI:10.1080/02699052.2022.2034190

Migraine and large artery atherosclerosis in young adults with ischemic stroke
CONCLUSION: In this study of young adults with ischemic stroke, migraine had a negative association with LAA. This negative association was independent of traditional vascular risk factors and was found for both MWA and MWoA.PMID:35122432 | DOI:10.1111/head.14265

Neurological manifestations as prognostic factors in COVID-19: a retrospective cohort study
ConclusionsNeurological symptoms are frequent among patients with COVID-19. Encephalopathy was the most frequent neurological complication and was associated with a higher mortality. Those with anosmia had a lower mortality.

Describing Nonfatal Intimate Partner Strangulation Presentation and Evaluation in a Community-Based Hospital: Partnerships Between the Emergency Department and In-House Advocates
Conclusions: Survivors of NF-IPS may present to community-based hospitals, and existing imaging guidelines can support clinicians in identifying serious internal injury such as carotid artery dissection and stroke. Further research is needed to better discern symptoms previously attributed to psychological trauma from poststrangulation brain injury. This study contributes to the growing literature on NF-IPS with data specific to community-based ED visits.
