Ischemic stroke of unclear aetiology: a case-by-case analysis and call for a multi-professional predictive, preventive and personalised approach
AbstractDue to the reactive medical approach applied to disease management, stroke has reached an epidemic scale worldwide. In 2019, the global stroke prevalence was 101.5 million people, wherefrom 77.2 million (about 76%) suffered from ischemic stroke; 20.7 and 8.4 million suffered from intracerebral and subarachnoid haemorrhage, respectively. Globally in the year 2019 — 3.3, 2.9 and 0.4 million individuals died of ischemic stroke, intracerebral and subarachnoid haemorrhage, respectively. During the last three decades, the absolute number of cases increased substantially. The current prevalence of stroke is 110 million ...

Glucose and lipid assessment in patients with acute stroke
Conclusions: The detection of abnormal metabolic milieu is a window of opportunity for aggressive management in persons with stroke as this will improve outcome. Routine screening for hyperglycaemia in persons with stroke using glycosylated haemoglobin tests and blood glucose may uncover previously undiagnosed DM.

Stroke Disparities: Disaggregating Native Hawaiians from other Pacific Islanders.
CONCLUSION: Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders with ischemic stroke have modestly different age of stroke presentation and burden of risk factors compared to each other. Disaggregating these two racial groups may be important to unmask any potential clinical differences in future studies. PMID: 26118142 [PubMed - in process]

Use of aspirin and statins for the primary prevention of myocardial infarction and stroke in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection
This retrospective, cross-sectional study evaluated whether HIV-infected patients received aspirin and statins for the primary prevention of myocardial infarction and stroke. Among the 258 patients included, 50.4% (n = 130/258) of the patients had a high risk of myocardial infarction and 14% (n = 36/258) of stroke. Overall, 43.1% (n = 56/130) and 50% (n = 18/36) of the patients were prescribed aspirin for the primary prevention of myocardial infarction and stroke, respectively. Among the patients who required statin therapy, 42.5% (n = 34/80) and 37.1% (n = 13/35) of patients received it for the primary prevention of myoca...

Association between dietary patterns and stroke in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in China: a propensity score-matched analysis
CONCLUSION: This study provides sufficient evidence to support the dietary intervention strategies to prevent stroke effectively. Maintaining a Balanced dietary pattern, especially with moderate consumption of foods rich in quality protein and fresh vegetables in T2DM patients, might decrease the risk of stroke in China.PMID:35356874 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980022000763

Member States commit to reduce preventable deaths from heart disease and stroke, cancer, diabetes and lung disease
UN Member States have reaffirmed their commitment to take bold measures to reduce the avoidable burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). These ailments, including heart disease and stroke, cancer, diabetes and lung disease kill 38 million people every year, many of them before they reach the age of 70. Most of these largely preventable deaths occur in developing countries, where this epidemic threatens to undermine social and economic development. Member States, gathered for the second time in 3 years at the United Nations in New York to discuss this topic, pledged to intensify efforts to combat the growing menace of NCD...

Identifying risk factors associated with stroke, myocardial infarction, ischemic heart disease, and unstable angina in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus patients
This study identified risk factors associated with stroke, myocardial infarction (MI), or a diagnosis of ischemic heart disease (IHD) or unstable angina (UA) in newly-diagnosed type 2 diabetes (T2DM) patients with no recent history of CV events and adequate glycemic control (HbA1c≤8.0%).

Creating an Inventory of Risk Factors for Predicting Stroke among Atrial Fibrillation Patients: A Systematic Review
In determining which atrial fibrillation (AF) patients should receive anticoagulation therapy, clinical treatment guidelines recommend use of the CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc risk-stratification schemes. While the CHADS2 considers congestive heart failure, hypertension, age ≥75 years, and diabetes mellitus, the CHA2DS2-VASc also considers gender, vascular disease, and patient’s age (65-74 years). Although these risk factors have been demonstrated to be highly predictive of stroke in elderly populations, these schemes may not be comprehensive, especially among younger populations.

Prevalence of Hypertension among Patients Attending Mobile Medical Clinics in the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan
Conclusions Better planning and preparation by humanitarian actors seeking to decrease the overall morbidity and mortality associated with disasters should include treatment of NCDs. There is limited evidence regarding the optimal management of hypertension in disaster settings. Clinical care of patients with hypertension and other NCDs is an important part of disaster relief and recovery. We recommend future studies to determine best practices and evidence-based management of other NCDs (such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, chronic lung disease, mental health etc.) in post-disaster settings. Estimating Clinical and Economic Outcomes Following a Diabetes-Related vascular Complication
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a prevalent disease affecting over 25 million people in the United States. Diabetes inflicts a heavy economic burden on US health-care, both directly and through substantially increased risks of micro- and macrovascular complications over time. The goal of this study was to estimate diabetes-related clinical and economic outcomes following a myocardial infarction (MI) or stroke. The impacts of experiencing an MI or stroke on five-year mortality rates and life expectancy were estimated using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data.

What is the relationship between type 2 diabetes mellitus status and the neuroradiological correlates of cerebral small vessel disease in adults? Protocol for a systematic review
This study aims to determine if adults with CSVD and T2DM have a distinct neuroradiologic phenotype.MethodsA systematic search of the literature will be conducted to find articles that report the MRI features of CSVD in a cohort of participants including those with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A number of databases will be searched including MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, and Web of Science. Proceedings and abstracts from key conferences will also be reviewed and relevant journals hand searched for additional papers. The references from selected papers will be scanned. Screening of potential articles, data extrac...
