Regulation of the epithelial Na+ channel by the mTORC2/SGK1 pathway
The epithelial Na+ channel (ENaC) is decisive for sodium reabsorption by the aldosterone-sensitive distal nephron (ASDN) of the kidney. ENaC is regulated by the serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase 1 (SGK1), a kinase genomically upregulated by several hormones including glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. SGK1 is activated by the serine/threonine kinase mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) isoform mTORC2. SGK1 knockout (sgk1–/– mice) impairs renal Na+ retention during salt depletion. The “Sapienza University Mortality and Morbidity Event Rate (SUMMER) Study in Diabetes”: Study Protocol
Discussion The “SUMMER study in diabetes” is aimed at identifying new molecular promoters of mortality and major vascular events in patients with T2DM. Most likely, these novel pathogenic factors will be instrumental for unraveling new pathways underlying such dramatic events. In addition, they will also be used as additional markers to increase the performance of already existing risk-scoring models in predicting the above mentioned outcomes in T2DM, as well as in setting up new preventive and treatment strategies, possibly tailored to specific pathogenic backgrounds.

Mortality following a cardiovascular or renal event in patients with type 2 diabetes in the ALTITUDE trial
Conclusion The majority of deaths occurred in patients who did not experience a non-fatal CV or renal event, although the risk of death was higher following an event. Our findings illustrate continuing opportunities to reduce morbidity and mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Prospective study on the incidences of cardiovascular-renal complications in chinese patients with young-onset type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Long-term Outcomes of Japanese Type 2 Diabetic Patients With Biopsy-Proven Diabetic Nephropathy.

Cardiovascular risk in women attending primary care centres: baseline data of the EVA study
Conclusions Four in 10 women attending primary care centres had a high or very high cardiovascular risk. Percentages of classic cardiovascular risk factors were higher in HT than in NHT and increased significantly with age. The most commonly used drugs were renin–angiotensin system blockers and diuretics.

Prevalence of hypertension and dyslipidemia and their associations with micro- and macrovascular diseases in patients with diabetes in Taiwan: An analysis of nationwide data for 2000-2009.
CONCLUSION: Although progressively increased prevalence of dyslipidemia and hypertension was observed in patients with diabetes in Taiwan, there was a decrease in the prevalence of stroke and CVD in the past 10 years. Among those with macrovascular diseases, except PVD, there was a trend of decreased prevalence of hypertension and dyslipidemia during the study period.
