Impact of COVID-19 pandemic lockdown on occupational therapy practice and use of telerehabilitation - A cross sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic lockdown experiences made us rethink the current approach of therapy services into alternative method (mixed mode) delivery of occupational therapy practice, which is including the combined method of video-based (telerehabilitation) consultation and face to face intervention.PMID:34002837 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202105_25845

Role of microbiota-derived short-chain fatty acids in nervous system disorders
Biomed Pharmacother. 2021 Jul;139:111661. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2021.111661. Epub 2021 May 8.ABSTRACTDuring the past decade, accumulating evidence from the research highlights the suggested effects of bacterial communities of the human gut microbiota and their metabolites on health and disease. In this regard, microbiota-derived metabolites and their receptors, beyond the immune system, maintain metabolism homeostasis, which is essential to maintain the host's health by balancing the utilization and intake of nutrients. It has been shown that gut bacterial dysbiosis can cause pathology and altered bacterial metabolites' fo...

Emerging role of the ketogenic dietary therapies beyond epilepsy in child neurology
Dipti Kapoor, Divyani Garg, Suvasini SharmaAnnals of Indian Academy of Neurology 2021 24(4):470-480 Ketogenic dietary therapies (KDTs) have been in use for refractory paediatric epilepsy for a century now. Over time, KDTs themselves have undergone various modifications to improve tolerability and clinical feasibility, including the Modified Atkins diet (MAD), medium chain triglyceride (MCT) diet and the low glycaemic index treatment (LGIT). Animal and observational studies indicate numerous benefits of KDTs in paediatric neurological conditions apart from their evident benefits in childhood intractable epilepsy, including...

The trend analysis of neurological disorders as major causes of death and disability according to human development, 1990-2019
This study aims to assess the trends in the incidence rate of neurological disorders in developed and developing countries worldwide during 1990-2019. The age-standardized incidence rate (per 100000 persons) of neurological disorders was the primary outcome, extracted from the Global Burden of Disease database for 189 countries and territories from 1990 to 2019. Using the Human Development Index (HDI), countries were classified into developed (HDI ≥ 0.7) and developing (HDI < 0.7) groups. Longitudinal analysis was performed using the Latent Growth Model (LGM) to assess the change in the incidence rate of neurological ...

6.17 Transcranial Photobiomodulation (tPBM) Is a Noninvasive Form of Brain Stimulation That Can Improve Language and Social Skills Acquisition in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder
The objective of this presentation is to demonstrate if transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) is an effective treatment modality to improve language and communication skills in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In recent pilot studies, tPBM has been shown to be effective for stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and depression. Furthermore, recently, 2 small pilot studies showed that tPBM can reduce symptoms of ASD. We hypothesized that children with ASD will demonstrate improvement in communication skills and language acquisition with this experimental treatment.

Introduction to the Special Issue "The Brain-Gut Axis"
Cell Mol Neurobiol. 2021 Oct 15. doi: 10.1007/s10571-021-01155-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis special Issue presents comprehensive and state-of-the-art advances in supporting the crucial role of the bidirectional interactions between the Brain-Gut Axis in health and diseases with an emphasis on the microbiome-gut-brain axis and its implications in variety of neurological disorders. There are intimate connections between the brain and the digestive system. Gut microbiota dysbiosis activates the intestinal immune system, enhances intestinal permeability and bacterial translocation, leading to neuroinflammation, epigen...

Barriers leading to increased disability in neurologically challenged populations during COVID-19 pandemic: a scoping review
CONCLUSIONS: COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to barriers that affect almost every aspect of healthcare and rehabilitation in neurologically challenged populations prompting an increase in their disability level. This can assist policymakers in designing mitigation strategies to minimize the detrimental effects on this vulnerable population.Implications for rehabilitationPandemic has led to the worsening of existing motor and non-motor symptoms, which need to be monitored, assessed and managed medically, and through rehabilitation in neurologically challenged populations.Notable decline of cognition and physical activity i...
