Polyomavirus BK and prostate cancer: a complex interaction of potential clinical relevance
Summary Several studies associating BK polyomavirus (BKPyV) and prostate cancer (PCa) suggested that this virus may exert its oncogenic activity at early stages of cancer development. The BKPyV oncogene, the large T antigen (LTag), has frequently been detected in areas of proliferative inflammatory atrophy, which is considered a precursor lesion leading to prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia and overt PCa. In a recently updated systematic review, the presence of BKPyV was significantly higher in PCa tissues than in healthy control tissues, providing an indication for a link between BKPyV infection and cancer risk. In addit...

Prostate Cancer.
Abstract This issue provides a clinical overview of prostate cancer, focusing on prevention, screening, diagnosis, staging, shared decision making, consultation, the role of primary care providers, and treatment. The content of In the Clinic is drawn from the clinical information and education resources of the American College of Physicians (ACP), including MKSAP (Medical Knowledge and Self-Assessment Program). Annals of Internal Medicine editors develop In the Clinic in collaboration with the ACP's Medical Education and Publishing divisions and with the assistance of additional science writers and physician write...

Obese Castration ‐Resistant Prostate Cancer Patients may be at a lower risk of all‐cause mortality: Results from the SEARCH Database
ConclusionsAmong non‐metastatic CRPC patients, obesity was associated with better overall survival. Although this result mirrors evidence from men with mCRPC, obesity was not associated with PC outcomes. Larger studies are needed to confirm these findings. This article is protected by copyright. Male Oncology Research and Education program for men at high risk for prostate cancer.
Authors: Lorentz J, Liu SK, Vesprini D Abstract Three groups of men are at high risk of developing prostate cancer: men with a strong family history of prostate cancer, men of West African or Caribbean ancestry, and men with a germline pathogenic variant in a prostate cancer-associated gene. Despite the fact that those men constitute a significant portion of the male population in North America, few recommendations for prostate cancer screening specific to them have been developed. For men at general population risk for prostate cancer, screening based on prostate-specific antigen (psa) has remained controversial d...

A comparative study of the effects of medical versus surgical androgen deprivation therapy on health-related quality of life in patients with metastatic carcinoma prostate
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with metastatic cancer, prostate initiation of ADT, irrespective of method, causes an initial improvement in HRQoL followed later by a more gradual decline below the baseline.

Zyxin: a mechanotransductor to regulate gene expression.
CONCLUSIONS: Zyxin is a crucial ingredient of the cellular mechanotransducing system and can modulate the gene expression. Given its clinical relevance, zyxin is also a promising target for the diagnosis and treatment of certain diseases. Understanding the role of zyxin in force sensing and gene expression regulating provides a compelling challenge for future biomechanics studies, and offers attractive evidence for zyxin as a potential diagnostic marker and therapeutic target for clinical diseases. Prostate cancer screening in New Zealand: lessons from the past to shape the future in the light of changing evidence.
Authors: Matti B, Zargar-Shoshtari K Abstract Prostate cancer represents a significant health burden worldwide. The cancer incidence had substantially increased since the introduction of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in cancer screening. This had led to considerable debates among health professionals and epidemiologists, since PSA as a screening tool seemed to be far from perfect. In New Zealand, the controversy was quite prominent in the last three decades, with some advocating the benefits of screening, while others concerned regarding the risk of harms. With the absence of an organised screening programme and ...

PROCEE: a PROstate Cancer Evaluation and Education serious game for African Caribbean men
Georgina Cosma, David Brown, Nicholas Shopland, Steven Battersby, Sarah Seymour-Smith, Matthew Archer, Masood Khan, A. Graham Pockley Journal of Assistive Technologies, Vol. 10, No. 4, pp.199-210 Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in men in the UK. Black men are in a higher prostate cancer risk group possibly due to inherent genetic factors. The purpose of this paper is to introduce PROstate Cancer Evaluation and Education (PROCEE), an innovative serious game aimed at providing prostate cancer information and risk evaluation to black African-Caribbean men. PROCEE has been carefully co...

Association between Albumin, Total Bilirubin, and Uric Acid Serum Levels and the Risk of Cancer: A Prospective Study in a Korean Population
CONCLUSION: The findings of this study support the role of antioxidants in carcinogenesis. Future large-cohort studies are needed to confirm the predictive value of albumin, UA, and total bilirubin levels in each type of cancer.PMID:34427064 | PMC:PMC8382725 | DOI:10.3349/ymj.2021.62.9.792
