Contamination prompts voluntary injectables recall
Mylan N.V. has announced a voluntary recall of specific lots of injectable products for conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, severe psoriasis, lung cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and acute nonlymphocytic leukemia because foreign particles were observed during testing of retention...

Limbic encephalitis due to GABAB and AMPA receptor antibodies: a case series
We present a novel series for further clinical and paraclinical refinement. Methods Serum and cerebrospinal fluid samples from a diagnostic laboratory were selected if found to be positive for GABABR or AMPAR abs within a broad antineuronal ab panel. Data were retrospectively compiled. Results In 10 patients, we detected abs to GABABR. Median age was 70 years. Five of them were diagnosed with small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Intrathecal GABABR ab synthesis was found in all six patients with sufficient data available (median ab-index: 76.8). On MRI, we found bilateral mediotemporal and in two cases cortical abnormaliti...

Lung cancer brain metastases: factors enhancing tumour cell adhesion
Conclusion Lung tumour cell secreted VEGF and TNF-α enhance lung tumour cell adhesion to HBMECs by inducing endothelial glycocalyx degradation revealing previously ‘hidden’ E-selectin.

Autoimmune retinopathy - importance of recoverin b antibodies
We present two patients with autoimmune retinopathy and their clinical progression. A 70-year-old lady was referred to the neuroimmunology clinic with progressive nyctalopia and periorbital pain to exclude the possibility of an immune-mediated retinopathy. Visual acuity was 6/18 bilaterally with peripheral visual constriction. OCT showed disruption of the photoreceptor layers. A retinal antibody screen showed positive anti-Recoverin B antibodies. In view of the paraneoplastic association of this antibody, a thorough search for an underlying tumour was performed (CT, PET) and endobronchial ultrasound guided biopsy showed hi...

IJERPH, Vol. 12, Pages 12977-12987: Occupational Exposure to Urban Air Pollution and Allergic Diseases
Exposure to air pollution is associated with increased morbidity from cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer, respiratory and allergic diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate allergic diseases in 111 traffic wardens compared to a control group of 101 administrative employees. All participating subjects underwent a physical examination, in which a complete medical history was taken and a dedicated allergological questionnaire administered. Spirometry, Specific IgE dosage (RAST) and skin prick tests (SPT) were done. Diagnostic investigations such as the nasal cytology, a specific nasal provocation test and rhinomano...

Deciphering the link between COPD and lung cancer: Cigarette smoke-induced immunosuppression at the crossroads between cancer immune surveillance and escape
Conclusions: Short-term CS-exposure suppresses early anti-tumor T cell responses in vivo. Impaired anti-cancer specific immunity in smokers could be a critical determinant of lung cancer escape from immunesurveillance mechanisms.

Bronchoscopy in patients with haemoptysis and normal computed tomography of the chest is unlikely to result in significant findings.
CONCLUSION: CT should be used as first-line examination in patients with a history of haemoptysis. Furthermore, in patients above 40 years of age with positive findings of any kind on the CT, further examination with FOB is indicated. However, if the chest CT is without pathological findings, it is most unlikely that FOB will reveal anything of significance. FUNDING: none. TRIAL REGISTRATION: not relevant. Systems Medicine for Lung Diseases: Phenotypes and Precision Medicine in Cancer, Infection, and Allergy
Lung diseases cause an enormous socioeconomic burden. Four of them are among the ten most important causes of deaths worldwide: Pneumonia has the highest death toll of all infectious diseases, lung cancer kills the most people of all malignant proliferative disorders, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) ranks third in mortality among the chronic noncommunicable diseases, and tuberculosis is still one of the most important chronic infectious diseases. Despite all efforts, for example, by the World Health Organization and clinical and experimental researchers, these diseases are still highly prevalent and harmful. T...

Abstract B23: A phase 1 study in patients with mesothelioma or non small cell lung tumours requiring arginine to assess ADI-PEG 20 with pemetrexed and cisplatin (TRAP study)
Conclusions: The combination was well tolerated, the RP2D is 36mg/m2 ADI-PEG 20 weekly with pemetrexed 500 mg/m2 and cisplatin 75 mg/m2 every 3 weeks. Robust clinical activity has been observed with 78% pt having PR as best response on CT scan, as well as PR and SD in2 pt with sarcomatoid mesothelioma. The tolerability and response / disease control rate suggest that this combination may have clinical utility as first line treatment for these malignancies in ASS1-deficient pt. RP2D expansion cohorts are ongoing for pt with pleural mesothelioma or non-squamous NSCLC.Citation Format: Simon Pacey, James F. Spicer, Pui Ying Ch...

An immunohistochemical comparison of two TTF-1 monoclonal antibodies in atypical squamous lesions and sarcomatoid carcinoma of the lung, and pleural malignant mesothelioma
Conclusions Our findings indicate differences in the rates of positive and negative labelling with these two antibodies, and suggest the potential for misclassification of a proportion of squamous carcinomas of the lung as adenocarcinoma, and for misdiagnosis of some sarcomatoid mesotheliomas as sarcomatoid carcinoma of the lung. If the results of SP141 are assigned overriding significance, our findings further indicate that in isolation, neither negative labelling with either 8G7G3/1 or SP141 nor positive labelling with the SP141 MAb discriminates between sarcomatoid carcinoma and sarcomatoid mesothelioma, whereas positiv...

Environmental Pollution: An Under-recognized Threat to Children’s Health, Especially in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
Conclusions Patterns of disease are changing rapidly in LMICs. Pollution-related chronic diseases are becoming more common. This shift presents a particular problem for children, who are proportionately more heavily exposed than are adults to environmental pollutants and for whom these exposures are especially dangerous. Better quantification of environmental exposures and stepped-up efforts to understand how to prevent exposures that cause disease are needed in LMICs and around the globe. To confront the global problem of disease caused by pollution, improved programs of public health monitoring and environmental protecti...

Id: 67: henoch-schonlein prpura with a negative skin biopsy
Conclusion Although HSP patients mostly range from 4–7 years old it can still presents in adolescent age group. Non-thrombocytopenic palpable purpura with multi-organ involvement (gastrointestinal, skin and joints) should make one consider the diagnosis. skin biopsy should be taken less than 24 hrs from the presentation because in more chronic lesions, vessel damage leads to nonspecific leakage of all isotypes of immunoglobulin.
